Akira Fujiii cards ・藤井あきらトランプ

Apparently some of the chains of convenience stores here in Japan used to sell playing cards in collaboration with the magician Akira Fujii. He is frighteningly good with cards, but in Japan he is mostly famous for producing cards from his mouth (popularized by Bill Malone). The cards came with some explanations of magic tricks too, it says on the package. The jokers, and all the court cards, have Fujii-san's face. The quality of the cards is not great, though. One of our regular customers brought these cards to our magic bar.

前に、コンビニで藤井あきらのトランプ売っていたみたい。藤井さんはトランプでめちゃくちゃうまいが日本で一般人は口からトランプを出す変なおじさんくらいのイメージがあるらしい。トランプに簡単なマジックの説明も付いていたって書いてある。ジョーカーや絵札全部藤井さんの顔になっている。店の常連さんがこのトランプを持ってきた。

Recently I have been extremely busy at work and not had time to practice any new magic. Yesterday I started practicing hammering a nail into my nose, though. It is fun, but I am not sure where I can perform this. Not in front of children, at least... And most people will probably just be grossed out. But I like it!

最近仕事で半端なく忙しいので、新しいマジックを練習する暇がない。昨日からちょっと釘を鼻に入れるマジックを練習し始めたけど。楽しい（ちょっと痛いけど）。でも、見せれるところあるか、分からない。子供の前だ確かに駄目だ（真似されたら、困る）。一般人が多分ただ気持ち悪くなると思うし、笑。僕がこういうのが好きだけど。

Yesterday I met a magician friend for the first time in months. He has just come back from a two week vacation in Vietnam, and he brought me a souvenir. We also ended up chatting until 7 in the morning...

昨日、久し振りにマジシャン友達１人に会った。彼はベトナムの２週間（？）の遊びの旅行から帰って来たばかりなので、お土産くれた。朝７時までずっと話していた。

New magic maniac ・新しいマジックマニア

Today I ran into a guy I know since about a year ago who also does magic. I forced him to do a trick for the camera, and put it up on YouTube.

He is a big fan of Akira Fujii, just liek one of my other maniac friends. He was even dressed like Fujii-san today! (Hat, shirt, vest :-) He showed me the Sidewinder move from Fujii-san's DVD.

今日マジックバーでもう１人のマニアに会った。１年前から何回も会っているが今日カメラに何か見せてって、強制してみた。

More Mania Movie Clips ・マジックマニアの動画を又アップした

My friend felt lonely when we did not have a magic mania meeting, and he wanted to make some movie clips despite no one else being there. I uploaded three clips, his card control (palm shift), his cover pass, and his linking cigarettes. Something that is quite funny is that every time we record some movies with him, he is wearing the exact same shirt. He claims it is just a coincidence, but I am starting to believe he has only one shirt :-)

友達がマニアック会をやっていない時に寂しかったそうで、他の人がいなかったのに動画撮りたかった。動画３つアップした。友達のカードコントロール（パームシフト）、カバーパス、リンキングシガレット。最近不思議だと思ってきたのは、友達のマジックの動画の時に、友達が毎回同じシャツを着てい…彼によれば、偶然だそうだが僕が思っているのは、彼がもしかしたらシャツ一枚しか持っていないかも（笑）。

Today was Valentine's Day which is a big thing in Japan, but since none of has had anything better to do, we once again ended up having a magic mania gathering in the magic bar "Trick Bar Twister" in Sapporo. There is a report from the first magic maniac gathering available too.

今日、バレンタインだったが誰も何のやることもなかったみたいで、また札幌にあるマジックバー「トリックバーツイスター」でマジックのマニアック会を行った。第１回のマニアック会のリポートもある。

Benson Burner at the Christmas show ・クリスマスショーのパフォーマンス

I finally got a copy of my performance at Hokudai university magic club's Christmas show 2011. I did a routine from Tom Stone's book "Vortex", though I did not do it very well... The beginning looks OK I think, but towards the end I messed up, haha. Well, it is embarrassing to see yourself make mistakes, but I guess it is also a learning experience. The photos look good, though.

やっと北大奇術研究会のクリスマスショーの動画や写真が手に入った！Tom Stoneの「Vortex」という本からのマジックをやったがうまく出来なかった。最初の方が割と大丈夫だと思うが最後の方に失敗…自分の失敗を動画で見るのが恥ずかしいよね、笑。まぁ、勉強になるかなぁ？写真で見たら、いい感じだけど。

Yesterday evening I went to the magic bar "Trick Bar Twister" here in Sapporo to talk to a friend who works there. I also ran into another friend who often goes there.

昨日、札幌（すすきの）にあるマジックバー「トリックバーツイスター」に行った。友達がそこで働いているんだ。たまたま別の友達も店に来ていた。

We now have the Sapporo Snow Festival and the Susukino Ice Festival here in Sapporo, bringing huge amounts of tourists (Wikipedia says it is about 2 million tourists that come here for these events). We thought maybe this would mean that the magic bar would be busy, but no. In fact, there were only two other guests the whole night.

札幌雪祭りもすすきの氷の祭もちょうど今始まったので、観光客がいっぱい来ている。Wikipediaによれば、毎年200万人くらい来るそうだ。だから、マジックバーも混んでいるかなと思ったが激暇だった。私たち以外2人しか来なかった。

This was a good chance for us to have a "magic maniac" face-off. We recorded movies of different magic moves that the other people wanted to see. And I uploaded 11 of those movies to YouTube. So here is a short description of each of them:

The Ussel Pass ・ウッセルパス

First out, we have the "Ussel Pass". It is similar to the muscle pass with coins, though a slightly different part of the hand is used. My friend says he wanted to learn the muscle pass but did not know how it was done, so he just guessed and ended up learning something slightly different...

Shogo's Card Control etc. ・ショウゴのトランプの神業

One friend is a huge fan of Akira Fujii. He is also fond of learning difficult moves, so he can do quite a lot of what Fujii-san does. His moves also look quite similar to Fujii-san's moves. Here are some of the things (Akira Fujii based and others) we recorded.

友達1人が藤井アキラの大ファンなんだ。難しい技法も好きで、藤井さんの技法も結構練習してて、出来ることが多い。やり方も結構藤井さんっぽい。色々なトランプの技法を撮った。

My friend is very good at the Diagonal Palm Shift (Fujii-san style). I am not (I have never practiced it). My friend did it very well for the camera. I then did a parody version of it, and did not even do the parody very well...

友達はダイアゴナル・パーム・シフト（藤井さんのやり方の）が上手だ。僕は下手だというか、練習したこともない。友達がカメラに綺麗に見せた。僕がその後ふざけたようにそれをばかにしようとした。ばかにすることも結構下手な感じになったけど、笑。

My friends thought that I should do something for the camera too, so I ended up doing two card moves with someone else's deck (I am not used to Bicycle cards, but can do most of my moves with any deck I guess).

友達に「ヨーナスも何かしなきゃ！」って言い張っていたので、結局借りたトランプでカードマジックの動画撮られた。Bicycleを普段使わないので、慣れていない。でも、何のカードでも何となく大丈夫だ。

I have bought a fair number of t-shirts with animals being cannibals, pigs eating pork, chickens eating fried eggs, cows eating beef steak, etc. Today I wore a shirt with a salmon eating salmon sushi with a sad face.

I have also begun using these t-shirts for magic tricks. These are not very sophisticated tricks, more of a silly gag kind of magic, but they are kind of cute I think. People seem to like them too. Today I uploaded a clip of the salmon version.

共食いシリーズのティシャツ6種類くらい買った。豚がトンカツを食べているとか、牛が牛ステーキを食べているとか、鶏が目玉焼きを食べているとか。今日、鮭が悲しい顔でサーモンの寿司を食べているシャツを着ていた。

最近、マジックにも使い始めた。素晴らしいマジックではなく、くだらないギャグみたいなマジックだが、自分でちょっと面白いと思った。うけが結構良いし。今日、サーモン版をアップした。

Today a group of eight fairly young men came to our magic bar. One of them asked me: "Didn't you participate in the Sapporo Zombie Walk three months ago?" Indeed I did. He even had a photo of himself posing with me when I was in my zombie make-up, in his cell phone. Small world. And quite impressive of him to see that it was me, and to remember me.

今日、マジックバーのお客さんに「去年の10月に札幌ゾンビ・ウォークに参加していませんでしたか？」って聞かれた。参加してた！お客さんの携帯に、彼が僕のゾンビ姿と一緒にポーズとっている写真がまだ入っていた。狭いね！そして、よく僕だったと分かった。よく覚えたしね。

Since I had the flu for a week or so, I have not had time or energy to do much interesting stuff, but I have had plenty of time to watch old TV series. I noticed that BBC has started the second season of "The Magicians". My favorites Barry & Stuart are still on the show, but the other magicians have been replaced. The boring concept of the "forfeit" for the losing team is still in the show (and has at least been made slightly more exciting), and they also added phone voting by viewers (which leads to endless "and these are the numbers to call" announcements boring you during the show). On the plus side, all teams now do 4 tricks instead of 3, and during the tallying of the votes there is a guest performance by some unrelated magician. All the celebrities so far have been very funny, and the show is definitely recommended.

最近インフルエンザにやられてて、特に何もしていない。映画やドラマを観る機会だったけど。イギリスのテレビ局のBBCで、"The Magicians"のシーズン２が始まった。僕の好きなBarry&Stuartというマジシャン組がまだ参加している。他のマジシャンが変わった。つまらない罰ゲームがまだショーにあるし、電話で一般人が負けるチームを選ぶことになって、電話に関しての面倒なところがいっぱいあるし、ちょっと悪いほうに変わったことがある。でも、皆が今4回マジックすることになったし（前に3回だった）、毎週ゲストマジシャン1人が自由にパフォーマンスするし、いい変更もある。見たほうがいい。

Another thing I watched lately is this very funny clip from another magic TV show:

It is from the hidden camera show "T.H.E.M." and shows a quick change artist. She asks shoppers in a clothing store for advice on what clothes look good on her, and changes her whole outfit in a few seconds every time. "Was that really fast?!" etc. "How can you do that so fast?!" "I guess I just shop a lot". I like hidden camera when as here the premise is really funny and everyone is still having fun.

他にも色々な動画を観ている。アメリカにあったT.H.E.M.というショーからの動画も好きだ。服屋さんで買い物している一般人に「この服の中、どれが私に一番似合うと思う？」と聞いて、数秒で服を変える女性マジシャン。かなり面白い、笑。「何でこんなに早いの？！」「え…買い物し過ぎかな？」って。うける。

Sunday Magic ・日曜日にもマジック

A fairly full counter, even on a Sunday.

Yesterday I went out to the coutry side and when I was coming back through pouring rain I passed by one of our magic bars (the one I usually do not do magic in). It is normally closed on Sundays, but I had overheard our owner mention that he would be there on Sunday and keep it open at least during the early hours. So I decided to drop in to get a short break from the cold and rain.

昨日田舎に行って、帰る時に冷たい雨がかなり降ってきた。帰る途中にうちのマジックバー（僕がいない方だけど）を通るので、ちょっと雨から逃げて、リラックスしながらオーナーとマジックの話しようと思った。日曜日は普段休みなんだが今日オーナーが店に行ってやる予定だった。

An empty counter, what I expected on a Sunday.

I was expecting the place to be more or less empty, but in fact it was almost full when I got there. And our boss had just gotten off the phone with someone saying that a group of three and another group of four people were also coming soon... That would have been very difficult for him to handle alone, so he was happy to see me. And I ended up behind the counter doing magic until after midnight instead of resting in a comfortable chair and going home early to sleep.

日曜日だったので、暇だろうと思ったが入ったら、結構混んでいた。電話で後3人と4人の2組も来るって予約も入ったし。1人でなかなか出来ない感じになっていたので、オーナーが僕を見て大喜びだった、笑。結局休まず、カウンターに入って24時過ぎまでマジックをやっていた。早く寝るつもりだったのに。

It was however quite a lot of fun. People though it was funny that I could put a pen in my ear and keep it there no matter how much it looked like it would fall out.

楽しかったけど。いいお客さんばかりだった。ボールペンを耳に入れて、どうしてもペンが落ちないのが結構うけた。

Cake!

Our part time bartender Aya was also there with her friends during the early hours. She had to leave and could not help out, but since she works in a cake shop during the days she had brought cake! Very nice cake.

アルバイトのあやちゃんも友達と来ていたが早く帰った。手伝って貰えなかったが本業はケーキ屋さんなので、ケーキを持って来た。美味しかった。

My boss told me that "by the way", the place will be open next Sunday too. Hint hint.

ちなみに、来週の日曜日もやるよってオーナーに言われた、笑。

Curry and magic ・カレーとマジック

Two magicians wading into the sea of customers to do magic.

Last Thursday I went over to our magic bar to visit my colleagues. It turned out that the whole place was reserved for a special event, but I figured I count as staff and went in anyway.

木曜日にマジックバーの友達に会いに行ったら、「貸切なう」って書いてあった。僕はスタッフだと思って、入ったけど。

Sapporo is famous for the dish "soup curry", a spicy soup, invented here. People from the more famous soup curry restaurants in town apparently have a get together once per month, and this month they were in our magic bar. One of them is one of our most frequent customers.

札幌にスープカレーという名物料理がある。スパイシーなスープだ（カレーの味とはちょっと違う）。有名なスープカレー屋の人が月に1回集まるらしい。今月、うちのマジックバーで飲んでいた。その1人がうちの常連さんだから。

Once my boss got out of the way, another colleague also happened to enter the frame "by chance".

It was quite busy, with them drinking very large quantities of alcohol compared to our usual customers. It was quite a lot of fun, though, and I ended up doing a little bit of magic too, even though it was my off day.

忙しかった。皆、普段のお客さんより飲んでいた。楽しかったけど。僕もちょっとマジックした。休みの日だったのに。

New Year Party Magic ・新年会マジック

On Friday I went to a "start of the new year"-party (Shinnenkai) with my boss, and we did table hopping there for an hour. The party was held at the Art Hotel in Sapporo, which has a very fancy party hall. We had our own room for changing etc. that also looked very impressive.

金曜日に店長と新年会でマジックをしに行った。アートホテルのお洒落なところでテーブルホッピングした。

The magic went fine, and we had 6 tables to perform for, both of us doing magic at each table, but not at the same time. Some people also started coming over to the next table to see more magic which made it more difficult for me, since I had not brought that much stuff along in my pockets since I expected every person to see only about 5 minutes of magic. I had enough so that I did not have to do the same magic at two neighboring tables, but not so much more than that.

マジックはうまくいった。6卓を回って、僕も店長も各テーブルでマジックをやった（同時にはやっていなかってけどね）。最後の方、隣のテーブルにも見に行く人も結構あったけど。1人に5分くらいのマジックしか見せないと思ったので、そんなに道具を持って行っていなかったから、2～3回見る人ならちょっときついと思った。毎回次のテーブルで前のテーブルと同じマジックしないようにしていたがそれくらいしか持っていなかった。

We had lots of fun, and got some sandwiches from the hotel too.

Surprise magic ・マジックにビックリ

Today we had the "start of a new year"-party for the university staff. 90 minutes of eating and drinking copious amounts. I was talking to an old friend there, and he mentioned to some other professor that I was a magician. It turned out that this other person has recently started practicing magic, and he wanted me to show him something.

I said I did not have anything with me to do magic with, but he ran off to get his bag and produced a (Bicycle) deck of cards! I did a short trick, and he did some tricks himself. Later he asked me to do other tricks over and over, so I ended up doing quite a few during the course of the evening. I also ended up running out of business cards by handing out cards to everyone who expressed an interest in coming to our magic bar... I was quite surprised at finding a magician (in training) at the faculty dinner.

今日北大職員新年会に行って来た。90分の食べ飲み放題だった。友達と喋ったら、友達の知り合いの先生に紹介されて、「この外人さんがマジシャンなんだ」って。その先生も最近マジックの練習をし始めたそうだ！びっくり。何か見せてって言われた。

何も持って来てないと言ったがその先生が自分のバッグからまさかのバイシクルのトランプを取り出した、笑。僕が適当にトランプのマジックをして、彼も色々見せた。その後も何回もまた何か見せてと言われたので、結局色々やった。結局名刺も配りまくって、名刺切れた、笑。マジックバーが札幌にあること知らない人が多くて、マジック見たらもっとみたい人も多くて、名刺をもっと沢山持って行けば良かった。大学の職員の新年会でマジシャンに出会えると思わなかった。

Magic in Saitama ・埼玉でマジックショー

I went to Saitama for New Years. My brother and his girlfriend came to Saitama (from Sweden) too, so we met up there. I was asked to do magic when I was there, so half of my bags where just magic props.

お正月に埼玉に行って来た。弟も彼女と一緒に埼玉に来たので、そこで会えた。埼玉でマジックショーをやって下さいと頼まれたので、バッグ半分くらいがマジック道具だった。

I did three magic shows, one for my brother's girlfriend's younger brother who was only home for one day (the rest of the time he had to work), and two shows at a party where lots of friends and other guests also showed up, apart from the family living in the house we were staying.

マジックショーを3回した。一回目は弟の彼女の弟さんの為だった。1日の休みしかなかったので、他の人がまだ来ていなかったのに、その時しかなかった。他の6人くらいも見ていたけど。他の時は10人くらいのお客さんがいた。

Some people had seen me do magic last year too, and some saw several (or all) of this years shows too, so I was running low on new material to show. Especially since there are some things you cannot fly with (fire magic stuff) or would prefer not to lug around when travelling (illusions).

去年のお正月も埼玉で過ごして、その時もマジックやったし、今年のマジックを毎回見ていた人もいたし、ネタ切れになりそうだった、笑。持って行ける道具も限られているし（ファイヤーのマジックとか、飛行機で厳しい・イリュージョンが重くて持って行きたくない）。

Not my FRISK, but still funny

Everything went fine, though. I produced lots of ball pens, did some card tricks, etc. One very popular trick was using a pack of FRISK breath mints, changing in size, changing the text on it, etc. Later, a girl showed up late and she had a tiny FRISK box attached to her phone, which was funny for everyone who had seen the FRISK magic, and which surprised me :-)

全然大丈夫だったけど。ペンを沢山出したり、カードマジックもしたり、ギャグネタ色々見せたりした。FRISKを使ったマジックが凄くうけた。大きさや書いてあることが変わるマジックだ。その後来た女の子が携帯にちっちゃなFRISK付けてあって、それもうけた、笑。僕もビックリした。

The most popular trick was using a bunch of sponge rabbits. Last year was the year of the rabbit, so it was quite fitting. Rabbits are easy to talk about in Japan too, since Japanese people have some interesting beliefs about rabbits. The rabbits were so popular so that people who had seen it last year wanted to see it again, and people who had seen it before dinner wanted to see it after dinner too, etc. So a rabbit encore was called for, and though I declined at first, everyone was VERY persistent, so in the end I gave in and did the trick once more (should prepare for this and pack a different ending to the trick too, next time...). It seemed that surprisingly enough, most people did still not catch on, and everyone were happy.

一番うけたのはスポンジのウサギのマジックだった。去年ウサギ年だったから、いい繋がりもあった。日本人のうさぎに関しての考え方も、喋りしやすくなるところがあるので、よく使う道具だ。去年もやったけど。でも、去年や今年見た人でも、またアンコールで観たいって、頼んだ人何人もいた。断ったが皆がかなりしつこかったので、結局もう一回やった。それでも、ほとんど誰もわからなかったみたい。また大うけ。又今度別のオチも持って行こう…

In Japan, people do not really celebrate Christmas. It is however a day when traditionally couples go to some fancy restaurant, or at least you have to go on a date. I was in our magic bar the whole evening (actually every day from December 22 to 25; 23rd is a holiday (the emperor's birthday) and 25th we were open despite it being a Sunday just because quite a few couples wanted to come) but I do not have anyone to date anyway, so that was OK.

日本でクリスマスは特に何もやらないよね。デートに行く習慣はちょっとあるみたいだけど。僕はマジックバーで、木・金・土・日曜日に毎日出ていた（普段日曜日やっていないがクリスマスだからカップル来るかなと思われて、やっていた）。デートしてくれる相手がいないので、出勤でも問題なかったね、笑。

The other two magicians both did their magic dressed as Santas. No pockets meant it was difficult to bring your stuff with you to the tables etc., and the suits were very hot.

We also had another couple where the guy proposed to his girlfriend in our magic bar. This time too, the girl said yes. A very cute couple.

他のマジシャン2人がサンタのコスプレでマジックをやっていた。ポケットがなくて、ものをテーブルに持っていくのが面倒だったそうだし、暑かったらしいし、僕は普通の服で良かった。

又マジックバーでプロポーズがあったんだ。今回もうまく行った。可愛いカップルだった。

On Sunday I did a volunteer magic show for over 100 kids (and over 40 grownups). The English conversation school ECC had a Christmas party at the Toyohira Kumin Center. There is a huge stage there that was quite nice to use.

日曜日にボランティアー活動として、100人以上（と大人40人以上）にステージマジックのショーをしてあげた。ECCという英会話スクールのクリスマスパーティーだった。豊平区民センターで、いい感じの大きなステージがあった。

I showed up early to the party (my show was the final point in the programme) and played with the kids for two hours before doing the magic show. I was introduced as a native speaker of English (which was a surprise to me, haha) and as "Dr Hato". That is my user ID and mail address for many of my digital accounts, since I am a doctor (Ph.D. in computer science) and since Jonas comes from the Hebrew word for dove (as in the symbol of peace) and that would be "hato" in Japanese. It is not really a name I use when talking to people though, but they asked if they could introduce me like that and I said fine.

僕のショーがプログラムの最後だったが早い時間から参加して、2時間くらい子供と遊んでいた。最初にスタッフの人と一緒に皆の前で紹介された。紹介は「英語のネイティブのドクター鳩」って。僕が英語のネイティブ？初耳、笑。ドクター鳩って、よくメールアドやユーザーIDをドクター鳩にしているんだ。ドクターなんだよね。博士号ということのドクターね。僕の名前、Jonas、がもともとヘブライ語で平和の象徴の「鳩」という意味の言葉だったそうだから、Jonasって漢字で書けば「鳩」になる。人と話す時には「ドクター鳩」って使わないが担当者に「ドクター鳩で紹介しても大丈夫ですか？」と聞かれたので、「いいですよ」と言った。

I did a 15 minute show for the kids and despite the angles being quite severe (people where mainly in front, but there were people behind, and to both sides as well, and some were looking more or less from underneath...) everything went well. The kids seemed very happy.

15分のマジックショーをした。角度が結構大変だった。真横（左も右も）・後ろ・真下から見ている人もいた…それでもうまく行ったけど。子供たちが喜んでくれた。

After the show, a girl of about five years came up to me and scolded me though. She said, "So you can speak Japanese! If you can speak Japanese, why didn't you talk to me in Japanese from the start?!"... :-) Well, I had been asked to speak English to all the kids since it was an English conversation practice thingy that held the party. Doing magic in English is difficult for me since I am not used to it, and impossible for the kids to follow along with anyway, so the magic show I did all in Japanese. The girl thought that for communication purposes it would be better to chose a language where we both are fluent enough to understand each other :-)

ショーの後、5歳くらいの女の子が僕に来て、僕がその子に叱られた、笑。「日本語話せるか？何で前から日本語で話してなかった！？」って、笑。パーティー中、英語で子供と話して下さいと言われたので、ずっと英語で話していた。マジックを英語でやるのが僕にとってもちょっと大変だ（慣れていないから）し、子供が付いて行けないし、マジックショーは日本語でやった。その女の子が、遊びでも一番コミュニケーションのやり取りがスムーズになる言語を使えばいいと思っていた。基本的にそうだよね、笑。

The end of an era ・手品卒業

After our big stage magic show with the university magic club, there was a lot of clean up to do, but after that there was also a party. Every year, you have to make a promise ("I will not spill a single drop of juice from the glass of juice that I am going to make disappear") and if you cannot fulfil that promise you have to do something unpleasant ("I will eat the spiciest food they serve at the spiciest Indian restaurant in town").

大学のサークルの大きなステージショーの後、片付けとか色々あったが後で打ち上げもあった。毎年、罰ゲームみたいに、自分で決めたこと（「消すグラスからジュース1滴も溢さない」）が出来なかったら、自分で決めた罰あたる（「札幌の一番辛いカレー屋で一番辛いものを食べる」）の習慣があった。今年はなかったみたいが僕が自分で自分のパフォーマンスがちょっと足りなかったなぁと思って、去年の罰のようにした（去年うまく行ったので、やらなかった）。基本的に、三年目の人（僕が三年目なんだ）が「1位になる」の約束にしないと行けない習慣だったらしい（ってことは、だいたい三年生皆罰だったね）し。

This year it seemed this tradition had been removed, but I though my performance did not really live up to expectations so I decided to punish myself with my chosen punishment from last year (when everything went fine and I did not have to do anything). Traditionally, all the last year magicians (this is my last year) have to promise that they will be the number one performer of the year (which of course means most last year magicians cannot fulfil their promise...) So I spent the party (well, parties) and time between the parties wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Since Sapporo is fairly cold this time of year (minus 5 degrees Celsius on the night in question) I also put on a muffler.

僕の罰は、打ち上げは短パン・半袖で行くってことだったから、まあまあ寒いすすきのにその感じで行った。マイナス5℃だったらしい。ちょっと寒かったので、マフラーもして行った。

When we were waiting at the subway station (I got there by walking, but everyone was to gather at the subway station) for some people who were late, one of the other guys asked me: "What is up with your clothing?!". At the same time, he adjusted his own muffler, which I took as a sign that he wondered why I had a muffler. I answered: "I thought it was is a bit cold today, so I put on a muffler". Another guy standing next to us thought that was hysterically funny, so when other people came up and asked things like "What the hell is wrong with Jonas?" he would jump in and say "Ah, Jonas thinks it is cold outside today so he put on a muffler". One of the few times irony has been appreciated in Japan :-)

地下鉄駅集合だった。僕が歩いて行ったが遅れた人を待っていた時に皆で地下鉄駅で待っていた。その時に、先輩に「今日の格好、どうした？！」って聞かれた。聞きながら、自分のマフラーを触っていたので、「何でマフラーしている？」という意味の質問のように受け取った。「外がちょっと寒いので、マフラーしてきたよ」と言った。隣にいた（別の）先輩、大うけ。後で他の人も何人か似たような質問した。その先輩がだいたい「あ、ヨーナスは寒いと思っているから、マフラーしてきたって」と言い出した。珍しくて、日本で皮肉が伝わった、笑。

Speaking of irony, it turned out that unlike last year when we were in a very hot restaurant, this year our party took place on top of the Norubesa building. On top, and not inside. There were plastic film making something like walls so it was at least no windy, but it was cold. The other people in general kept their coats and jackets on... This came as quite a(n unpleasant) surprise to me :-) I found a chair close to the gas burner keeping the staff vaguely warm, and sat there.

1次会の店に着いたら、ちょっとしたショックになったけど。去年、暖かい居酒屋でやっていたのに、今年は札幌にあるノルベサという建物の上でやっていた。建物の中ではなく、建物の上。壁みたいにプラスチックのフィルムが張ってあったので、風が通らないことにはなっていたが寒かった。他の人がだいたいコートやジャケットのまんまで食べていた。僕がストーブの一番近い椅子に座った、笑。

In the magic club of our university you graduate after three years. This was my third year, so I was one of the people getting kicked out. At this final big party, we were all given flowers and a small present. The present turned out to be a small towel that when rolled up in a nice way looks like a piece of strawberry cake.

北大の奇術研究会では、三年間で卒業になる。僕が今年で三年目だったので、他の三年目の人と一緒、打ち上げでプレゼントやお花を貰った。プレゼントは巻いたらショーとケーキに見えるタオルだった。来年4月からもうマジックのサークルのメンバーではなくなる。

On December 17, the magic club of the university (which I am a member of) had its yearly big stage magic show. This year it was the 40th time for this event, which is called the "Magic Festival". We rented the Sapporo Kyouiku Bunka Kaikan, which has a nice stage, with lighting, sound, curtains etc.

2011年12月17日に北大奇術研究会（僕が入っている部活のマジッククラブ）の大きなステージマジックショーがあった。今年第40回目の「Magic Festival」だった。札幌の教育文化会館を借りて、ちゃんとしたステージでやった。

Sadly, my camera decided that this was a good day to die, so I could take approximately 0 pictures back stage... It made a short recovery for two minutes, so I did get a few pictures of things I was not that interested in, but now I am using my super old camera until I have time to go buy a new one. Other people took pictures, though, so I will try to get their pictures later. And the whole thing was recorded with video cameras too, so I will put up a movie of my performance when those guys get finished with processing the videos.

残念ながら、僕のカメラがちょうど17日の朝に死んだ。裏で面白い写真撮りたかったが出来なかった。一瞬、カメラがちょっと復活したがその時に撮りたいことが特に何もなかった。カメラが又すぐ駄目になった。ステージショーが終わってから、家に置いてあった6年前に買ったカメラを取りに行ったが新しいカメラを買いに行かなきゃ。他の人が結構写真撮ったので、後で写真貰おう。勿論、ステージショー全部動画も撮ってあるから、動画関係の人の処理が終わったら、ユーチューブに僕のパフォーマンスの動画をアップする。

The show started at 13:00 and went on for two hours with a short 10 minutes break. We had been working since 8:30 with preparations, though, and I had to do some stuff for my own performance too so I had been up since 6:30.

13時開演で、2時間くらい（10分の休憩を含めて）のステージショーだった。我々が8時半からずっと色々な準備していたけど。僕が自分のパフォーマンスの為の色々な準備もあって、家で6時半から色々やっていた。

This year, the whole hall was sold out, so it was packed with people. I am told. When I was on stage, I had a very strong spotlight on me and no light on the audience, so I could not see anything at all.

今年満席になった。と言われた。僕のパフォーマンスの時に客席が真っ暗で、僕に強いスポットがあったので、何も見えなかった。

My performance went so-so. Several things could have been performed better, but the audience seemed happy enough. Every year there is a questionnaire where the audience members can vote on which performance they liked best. Last year the juggling group were number 1, the MCs where number 2, and I was number 3. This year I only made it to number 5 (of 18), but that is not bad I guess.

僕のパフォーマンスがまあまあになった。大失敗はなかったが自分で見たら、色々なところでもうちょっとうまく行けば良かったなぁと思う。毎年、アンケートもある。観客が誰のパフォーマンスが一番良かったかを書くんだ。去年、一位はジャッグリング組で、2位は司会で、3位が僕だった。今年は18演目の中の5位しかなれなかったがそれでも悪くないかもしれない。

I performed a routine from Tom Stone's book "Vortex". I like it a lot myself, though there is quite a lot of work for me to do before the performance even starts. People who came up to me later during the night said they liked it too but thought it was too short. They wanted to see more (this year everyone had been told to make their performances short, since there are too many active members, but not so many other people actually did...).

僕がTom Stoneの「Vortex」という本に載っているネタをやった。自分で見た時に大好きなネタだ。準備が結構大変だけど。ショーの後で話してくれた人がだいたい面白いと言ってくれたが「短かったね！」とか「早く終わっちゃったね」と言われた。もっと見たかったそうだ。今年演者が多すぎて、皆自分のパフォーマンスを短くして下さいと言われたからだったけど（他の人があまりしていなかったみたい、笑）。

Apart from me, there were about 30 other magicians that performed all kinds of magic. There were illusions; flowers, CD:s, balls, parasolls, etc. being produced; juggling; rope tricks, and much more.

僕の他に、30人くらいのマジシャンも色々なパフォーマンスした。イリュージョン・花やCDや玉や傘の出現・ロープのマジック・色々あった。

A girl from Hong Kong ・香港からの女の子

Yesterday it was Thursday, so not a day that I would normally be doing magic in our magic bar. It so happened that one of the other magicians were away doing magic in a restaurant and I helped out while he was away. With excellent timing, the bondswoman for my apartment called me and asked if I was working. I said that I did indeed happen to be working. So she came to our magic bar together with a friend from Hong Kong. They went to college together in the U.S.

昨日、木曜日だったので、僕が普段マジックバーに出ていない日だったがもう一人のマジシャンが営業でレストランに行ってマジックをやっていたので、バーに人が少なかった。僕も早い時間に手伝いにマジックバーに行った。良いタイミングで、僕のアパートの保証人から電話掛かってきて、「今日出ている？」って。たまたまそういうことになっているねと答えて、結局保証人様が香港人の女の子とバーに来てくれた。2人が同時にアメリカの大学に行っていたそうだ。

So I ended up doing magic in English for them. I rarely do magic in English so it is a bit awkward. My English is much better than my Japanese, but since I always speak Japanese during magic, I do not know what to say when speaking English or even Swedish...

久しぶりに英語でマジックをやることになった。めったに英語でマジックしないので、結構違和感がある。日本語より英語の方が話せるがマジックをやる時にいつも日本語で喋っているから、英語やスウェーデン語でやろうとすると、何言えばいいか分からなくなる。

Later, two other friends showed up (separately) and I had a great time. One of them took a strange picture of me.

もうちょっと遅い時間に他の友達2人も（別々で）来た。楽しい夜になった。1人が上のおかしい写真を撮った。

Another fun part was when another magician picked up a deck of cards and claimed that he could just by touch take a stack of cards with exactly the number of cards anyone else specified, as long as the number was around 10 cards or so. And indeed he can. I said I can do that with any number of cards, perfect every time. And I did do it about 7 or 8 times. My magician colleague kept saying "kitanai!" the whole time though, haha. That is Japanese for "dirty", here in the sense that your personality is dirty. He thought I was cheating.

他に面白かったのは、マジシャン友達1人が「トランプからお客さんが言う枚数を感覚だてですぐ取れる」と言った。10枚くらいだったら、本当に出来るんだ。僕が「僕も出来る」と言った。何枚でも。7～8回くらいやった。勿論毎回パーフェクト。マジシャン友達がずっと「汚い！」と言っていたけど、笑。感覚でやっていないと思われたね。心の汚い外国人ですみません。

I have managed to book plane tickets to go to Saitama (near Tokyo) for New Years. My brother is coming to Saitama with his girlfriend. I got an e-mail saying that it would be good if I was still in Saitama on January 2, since then some of his girlfriend's friends are coming over and they want to see some magic. It also said, "By the way, she has told them that you are an American magician named Ben." It did not say why she would do such a thing...

お正月に埼玉行きのチケット取れた。弟が彼女と一緒に埼玉に来るんだ。メールで、「1月2日に（彼女の）友達が来るので、マジック見せて欲しい」って。そして、「ちなみに、ヨーナスがベンというアメリカ人のマジシャンだと（弟の彼女が）言った」って。何で彼女さんがそういうことを言ったか、書いていなかったけど…謎。

Recent stuff ・最近の出来事

Recently I am very busy with work, and somewhat busy with rehearsals for our Christmas show (December 17). Apart from the rehearsals, not so much is happening on the magic side so the blog is kind of at a standstill. I bought a new Tenyo "The Third Eye" as a backup for when the one that people keep dropping all the time stops working.

At the rehearsals last week, I managed to fail spectacularly both times. The first time I managed to pretend to put something in my right hand (that would later disappear) but forgot to close the right hand so it was pretty obvious that there was nothing there... At the next rehearsal, which took place at a real stage with curtains, lights, and everything, I managed to not notice that my bag with all the things I was going to use during the trick had disappeared into the table somewhere while the table was being carried out onto the stage, so things did not start out great. Reaching down with the left hand to retrieve something when no one was looking, I suddenly realized that there was nothing there to retrieve... I also managed to forget the order of things that I was supposed to do, and forgot to grab my final load at the appropriate time. All in all, two funny disasters.

In our magic bar, one guy proposed to his girlfriend with support by magic during the weekend. That was a first, I think. It went well.

最近忙しい。仕事でも、クリスマスの大きなステージマジックショー（12月17日）のリハーサルでも。リハーサル以外、最近マジックに関して特に何もないので、ブログが進まない。テンヨーのザ・サードアイをもう1個買った。お客さんに落とされるやつが壊れたら、すぐまたマジック出来るため。

先週のリハーサルで、2回リハーサルに行って、1回とも大失敗した、笑。最初の時に手にものを入れたふり（後で入れたものが消える）をしてから、手閉じていないことに気付いてちょっと恥ずかしかった。何も入っていないことが勿論バレバレだった。次の時にちゃんとしたステージでリハーサルがあった。音響・幕・何でも本番と同じ感じだった。僕が使うテーブルがステージに運ばれていた時にテーブルに付けてあった箱、パフォーマンス中に使う道具が入っている箱、テーブルの中のどこかに消えていたことに気付かなかった。演技中に、誰も見ていない時に箱から道具を取り出そうとしたら、あれ？ない！その後も手順を忘れて、最後のスチール忘れた、笑。うける…

週末にマジックバーで男の人が彼女にマジックでプロポーズした。マジックバーで初めてだったと思う。うまく行った。

A show I want to see ・見たいショー

When I was at Magic Bar Stockholm last week, they had fliers for this show. I linked to some clips with Brynolf & Ljung in a couple of previous blog posts, and I would love to see them live. Unfortunately, they do not seem to be touring Japan in the near future, and even when I am in Sweden I rarely have any free time...

先週スウェーデンに行っていた時に、マジックバーに行ったらこういうチラシが置いてあった。Brynolf & Ljungの動画が前にブログに載せた。生で見たいなぁ。残念ながら、日本に来なさそうだよね、笑。僕がスウェーデンに行く時にも暇な時間がほとんどないし。

Magic bar review: Magic Bar Joker ・マジックバージョーカー

In April 2011 I went to the magic bar "Joker" with a magician friend from Sapporo. We entered right at the opening time, and we were the only customers at that early hour. The bar is quite small, with mainly a small counter that we sat at. Joker is the most expensive magic bar I have been to so far, with 7000 yen for one hour (Half Moon, that I wrote about before (and coincidentally lies 23 seconds walk away from Joker), costs 8000 yen but for a longer show). It includes unlimited drinks, and more or less unlimited snacks like peanuts, chocolate, etc. The snacks included strawberries, and were quite impressive.

2011年の4月にマジックバージョーカーに札幌のマジシャン友達と一緒に行った。早い時間に入ったので、まだ他のお客さんがいなかった。店が結構狭くて、小さなカウンターがメインできれいだった。1時間7000円で今まで行ったマジックバーの中の一番高かった。（前のブログネタになったハーフムーンが8000円だが時間がもっと長い。）飲み放題とお菓子食べ放題付きだった。お菓子の中イチゴもあったからちょっと感動した。

First, a young magician did a fairly long performance for us. He was very good and also very funny. My friends 1000 yen bill ended up inside a green pepper fruit for instance. He also produced lots of strange things like rubber corn out of our armpits. The funniest thing was when he produced lots of things out of a coin purse that was just the metal frame (so it would seem to contain nothing), and a small very fancy looking bottle appeared. We marveled at this beautiful bottle, probably containing Champagne. He said: "Actually, it is a bottle of body soap which just looks like an expensive bottle of Champagne". Which was true. While we marveled at the genius of designing a bottle of shower gel to look like expensive Champagne, another bottle also appeared out of the purse frame without us noticing it. That first bottle was quite possibly the funniest thing I have seen produced by magic.

最初に若いマジシャンが結構長いパフォーマンスをしてくれた。上手だったし、面白かったし。例えば、友達の1000円札がピーマンの中から出てきた。うちらの脇の下からトウモロコシとかを出したりしたし。一番面白かったのは、がま口というか口金だけからコインとかを出したりして、突然瓶も出てきた。お洒落なシャンパンの瓶に見えたが、「実はこれがボディーソープなんだよ」と言われた。よく見たら、そうだった！その瓶に感動した。感動しながら、口金から本当のシャンパンの瓶も出てきた。全く気付かなかった。マジックで現れたものの中で、あのボディーソープが多分今までの一番面白かったと思う。

Not only was the magician quite skilled (though he flashed from time to time during the coin magic), he was also very funny to talk to. He did lots of coin and card magic and bent a fork. I also liked a trick where a cut open card box (very 2D) turned into a 3D card box actually containing a full deck of cards. Probably very angle sensitive, but still funny.

上手だった（たまにコインがフラッシュしたけど）だけではなく、喋りや見せ方も結構面白かった。コイン・カード・フォーク曲げがあった。切られた（2次元）トランプの箱が突然普通の箱（3次元）になって、トランプ52枚が出てきたネタも結構面白かった。角度厳しそうだな、笑。

Other things we received: an unopened PET-bottle with my signature, a card signed by my friend cut out from a lemon, the owners business card, a photo taken when we did not notice.

Then the master/owner of the bar also did a fairly long performance for us. He did an unbelievable number of tricks that could all be closing tricks in any magic bar. My friends 50 yen coin ended up in a glass bottle after being signed (switching a signed coin was impressive) despite being too large to insert; a crushed and empty can of Coca Cola was returned to unopened and full status by magic; a signed card ended up in an unopened PET-bottle, another signed card ended up inside a lemon; and more. He was good, though sometimes you could see for instance his break when doing the ambitious card with an omni-deck. The trick I liked most was when he showed a photo of a bunch of fruits, put the photo into a book/album, and when he reopened the book, lots of fruits fell out. Including a grapefruit that would be impossible to fit inside a closed book, to say the least, haha.

その後、店のマスターも長いパフォーマンスしてくれた。レベル高くて、〆にしてもいいネタを信じられないほど沢山やっちゃった。友達の50円にサインして、そのコインが物理的に無理なのに、グラスの瓶に入った（サインコインのスイッチ、初めて見たと思う、笑）。コーラの缶の復活。サインカードが新品のペットボトルに入った。別のサインカードが本物のレモンに入った。色々あった。上手だった（たまに、アンビシャスのオムニデックの時のブレーキが見えたりしたけど）。一番好きだったマジックは、果物が写っている写真を見せて、本（アルバム？）に入れて、本閉じて、本開くと本物の果物が沢山出てきた！グレープフルーツとか。本にどう考えても入らないものだった、笑。

We also received a photo taken of us when we were watching magic, that we did not notice when they took. All in all, we got to see a lot of high level magic, and a lot of it was not only high level but also very entertaining. While it was expensive, it was probably worth the money.

気付いていない時に撮られた写真とかも貰った。レベル高いマジックを沢山生で見ることになって、楽しかった。ちょっと高かったがその値段でもいいと思う。

My friends 1000 yen bill ended up inside a green pepper and thus smelling strange so he got a new one, which was folded like a shirt (also a word play joke in Japanese, were bill is "satsu" and shirt is "shatsu").

Location: good, near Shinbashi and Ginza stations, where there are many magic bars (only a 23 second walk from the magic bar Half Moon, according to Google maps)

Quality of magic: generally very high, lots of very high level magic done in a short time

Cost: 7000 yen (for 60 minutes)

Interior: small, but clean and nice

Staff: nice. Apart from the two magicians there was also a female bartender. Especially the young magician was nice and funny.

Overall impression: the most expensive magic bar so far, but a lot of high level magic. Maybe too many closing level strength effects done right after each other, which lessens the impact of the individual effects.

Magic museum review: Musée de la Magie

Another very old magic prop, which inspired me to make my own modern one.

I went to Germany on a two week business trip in 2009. Since the people at the research institute I was visiting did not want to work during the weekend, I had two days off during my stay. I took the train to Paris and visited the famous sites (the Louvre, where more than half the visitors spoke Japanese; the Eiffel tower; the L'Arc de triomphe; Notre Dame; etc.). Fairly close to Notre Dame, there is a museum of magic called Musée de la Magie, Paris.

2009年の秋にドイツに出張で行った。2週間くらいだったが相手の研究所の人たちが週末に働かなかったので、週末に暇になった。電車に乗って、パリに行った。有名なとこり色々回った（ルーブル美術館・エッフェル塔・ノートルダムとか）。ノートルダムのまあまあ近くにマジック博物館もある：「Musée de la Magie, Paris」

The items in the museum collection is the private collection of a famous French magician, Robert Houdin. There are big props used for large illusion, small items used for close up, old posters for magic shows, a magic shop selling lots of magic props, a small stage where they do magic shows for you, and lots of optical illusions.

マジック博物館にあるものが全部フランスの有名なマジシャンの「Robert Houdin」のプライベートのコレクションだった。イリュージョンの大型のものもあるし、クローズアップ用の小さなものもあるし、昔のマジックショーのチラシもあるし、昔のプロマジシャンのものを見る機会になる。マジックショップも、ステージもある。ステージで短いマジックショーを見ることも入場券に含まれている。

The museum was much smaller than I had expected. It was basically two pretty small rooms with old magic props on display. Seeing the very old props used by professional magicians of years long gone was quite interesting though. There is also a magic show included in the entrance fee. A young French magician did a short salon magic show for me and about 20 other visitors. Most people were French, but since enough were not he spoke both French and English during the show. He did some nice rope magic, some card tricks, and a chop cup routine (if I remember correctly). He was pretty good.

博物館が思ったより狭かった。普通の部屋２つくらい。そこに昔のマジック道具を沢山置いてある。面白かった。マジックショーも観れる。若いフランス人のお兄さんがサロンのマジックショーをやってくれた。僕の時に見ている人が20人くらいいた。フランス人が多かったがフランス語が分からない人もまあまあいたので、フランス語でも英語でもマジックの説明してくれた。ロープ・カード・チョップカップを見せてくれた（と思う）。上手だった。

There was also a magic shop selling books and magic props (modern ones). They had some interesting things, like gimmick coins looking like Euro coins.

他にマジックショップもあった。本やマジック道具を売っている（昔の道具ではなく、今の普通なもの）。ギミックコインのユーロ系の道具ちょっと気になった。

Optical trickery.

The museum also has a large collection of optical illusions and similar things, which I really enjoyed. There is also a large collection of old mechanical (wind-up) toys, that was pretty nice.

目の錯覚のものとかも沢山ある。面白かった。昔の動いているおもちゃとかも沢山ある。

The interior of the building is very nice. The walls and doors etc. are beautiful, and the display cases housing all the props are also nice. The stage for the magic show was small but nice. There were three levels of seats so everyone could see what was going on clearly without being blocked by people in front.

建物のデザインがきれいだった。壁やドアがきれいだったし、ディスプレーもそうだった。ステージも良かった。狭かったが三段の席があって、前に人がいても皆マジシャンちゃんと見れる。

Summary:
Place: kind of out of your way, so in a little inconvenient place. Nothing else of interest nearby, though I had an excellent lunch in a restaurant around the corner.
Price: very cheap
Size: very small
Magic show: a short salon magic show is included, and it was good
Overall impression: if you are in Paris and have time over, do visit. The famous things like the Eiffel tower or Louvre are better, though, so if you do not have time to see all, the magic museum should not be a high priority.

The first time I ever went to a magic bar was in 2008. I spent one week in Asahikawa because of a conference I was presenting some research at. The last day of the conference everyone else left Asahikawa but I was staying to meet a friend who lives in Asahikawa the next day. I was all alone in the evening and just randomly walked around the entertainment district. I came upon a sign saying they showed magic inside, and decided to check it out.

人生初めてのマジックバーに行った時は2008年の夏だった。旭川に一週間泊まっていた。学会で発表をする予定だった。学会の最後の日に他の研究者が皆帰っちゃったが僕が次の日に旭川に住んでいた友達に会う予定があったので、一人ぼっちになった。旭川の面白そうなところで歩き回っていた時にマジックをやっていますよって書いてあった看板を見かけた。面白いかなと思って入ってみた。

So on June 13 I had my first magic bar experience (though I had seen magic live once before at a lecture by the pro magician Tom Stone back at my university in Sweden), at the magic bar "Te to te to te" in Asahikawa.

6月13日にマジックバー初体験になった（スウェーデンで一回マジックを生で観たことがったけど。大学でプロマジシャンのTom Stoneが発表をした時に短いマジックショーもしてくれた）。「てとテと手」という店に入った。

There was an older magician (the owner) doing magic and a younger magician in training who did not perform for me but talked to me and made drinks. There were no other customers at the time I was there but when I was leaving a group of people entered the bar.

年上のオーナーさんが沢山のマジックを見せてくれた。他に弟子っぽいお兄さんもいたが話したり、飲み物を作ったりしかしなかった。早い時間に入ったので、他のお客さんがまだいなかった。帰った時に団体が入ってきたけど。

Since it was quite a long time ago I went there, I have fairly foggy memories of what magic I was shown. There were of course quite a lot of card tricks, but there were also tricks with rubber bands, paper clips, business cards, and lots of joke props. They also had a lot of napkins folded into animal shapes etc. Including one made to look like Godzilla. The magic was good, but nothing that stands out compared to the top level magic bars in Tokyo or Osaka (or Sapporo, though I may be partial here :-) I had a very nice evening, and if I have nothing to do in Asahikawa some other time I may go again.

もう3年以上経っているから、何のマジックを観たか、そんなに詳しく覚えていない。カードのマジックが勿論色々あった。輪ゴムやクリップや名刺のマジックもあったし、ジョークネタの道具も色々あったし。他におしぼりで作られた動物も置いてあった。ゴジラもあった！マジックのレベルが良かったが今まで行ったレベル高い店（東京や大阪や札幌（自分で言っていいのかな？笑））の方がもっともっとレベル高い。楽しい夜すごせたから行って良かった。また旭川にいる時に予定のない夜があれば、また行ってもいいと思う。

I have been to the magic bar 12ji ("12 o'clock") twice. It is located in Ginza, close to many other magic bars (Toto's bar, Half Moon, Joker, comes to mind) and stays open very late (5 A.M.) so you can go there after the other places have closed. They also have a very nice stage where they do stage magic. Even if you show up at 4 A.M. and no one else is there, they will do stage magic just for you.

十二時という店に2回行ったことがある銀座にあるので、回りに他のマジックバー沢山ある（例えば、ハーフムーン・都々’s Bar・ジョーカー）。5時までもやっているので、他の店に行ってからもまだ行ける。綺麗なステージもあって、何の時間でも本格的にステージマジックを見せてくれるんだ。午前4時に2人だけで入っても。

The first time I went there with a friend, we entered at around 3:30 or so, and no other customers were there at such a late hour on a Monday. Two magicians performed for us. Sasuga Ryu (a word play name in Japanese, it is a palindrome in writing) did mentalism on stage and Mac-san did close up magic for us at our table. They also hung around chatting with us, as did a girl who did not do any magic but was very funny when talking.

初めて行った時に友達と行って、3時半頃に入ったと思う。月曜日のそんな遅い時間に他のお客さんがいなかった。マジシャン2人がマジックを見せてくれた。流石流がステージでメンタルマジックを見せてくれた。マックという若いお兄さんがテーブルマジックを見せてくれた。他に面白い女の人もいた。マジックしなかったが喋りが面白かった。

The second time, I went there with the same friend, and at about the same late hour on a Monday. Sasuga Ryu and Mac were both there again, and Sasuga Ryu performed more mentalism for us close-up, and a female magician Kiyono did a stage magic show for us. The funny girl who does not do magic was also there, and was still very funny.

2回目の時に同じ友達と行って、大体同じ時間に入ったと思う。流石流もマックも今回も店にいた。ステージで喜代野という女性マジシャンがステージマジックショーをやってくれた。喋りの面白い女の人もいた。まだマジックは見せてくれなかったが変な行為や喋りが面白かった。

The interior of the place is quite interesting, with several small rooms in more or less a maze (finding your way back from the toilet can be challenging). They have a large and very nice stage with a curtain and all, and lots of tables with sofas in front of the stage.

店のインテリアが結構面白い。小さな部屋いくつかがあって、迷路みたいになっている（トイレから帰る時にちょっと難しいくらい）。結構広い本格的なステージがあって、幕も付いている。ステージの前にソファーとテーブル沢山ある。

The magic was OK but compared to the top level places in Tokyo it was not really on the same level. It was nice to see stage magic; including some jumbo card mentalism, water changing color when adding sand (and the sand becoming dry again when scooped out), fork bending etc. from Sasuga Ryu; and card manipulation, a three ring routine, and multiplying bottles from Kiyono. The close up magic included signed card to PET-bottle, packet tricks, finger manipulation, and all kinds of card magic.

マジックのレベルが大丈夫だったがトップレベルの東京のマジックバーと比べたら、ちょっと違うって感じだ。それでも面白いけど。ステージマジックを見せてくれるのがいい。例えば、ジャンボカードを使ったメンタルマジック・色が変わる水、水に入れた砂が一瞬で乾いて取れる・フォーク曲げを流石流に見せて貰った。喜代野さんが例えば、カードのマニピュレーソン・リング・増えるボトルとかを見せてくれた。クローズアップで、サインカードとペットボトル・色々なパケットトリック・指の技・カードマジック、色々あった。

12ji is part of a chain of magic bars, including 8ji, 10ji, and soon to open 11ji, all at various places in Tokyo. A magician I met in Sapporo had worked at 12ji and said he had been going around all the other places too, performing in all of them.

十二時はマジックバーのチェーンの1店舗なんだ。他に八時・十時・十一時（まだオープンしてないと思う）もある。全部東京にある。札幌で会ったマジシャンが前に十二時で働いていたそうだ。その時に他の姉妹店にも結構行っていたって。

Overall impression: nice with a real stage, and impressive that they do stage magic shows for you at any time, even if you are the only two guests in the place.

Magic bar "Pochi no mahou" ・マジックバー「ポチの魔法」

On February 22 2011 I went to a magic bar in Roppongi (Tokyo) called "Pochi no mahou". It was a great magic bar, but sadly the have since closed the place. Here is their old web page: Pochi no mahou.

2011年2月22日に六本木にあった「ポチの魔法」という店に行った。凄く良かったが残念ながら店がその後閉店した。ポチの魔法の昔のウェブページがまだある。

When I arrived it was already quite late (I got there more or less with the last subway train). There were lots of people in the bar when I got there but all but three customers left right after I entered. When things calmed down I was asked to watch a magic performance together with the other three customers at the counter.

着いた時にもう終電の時間だったので、人沢山入っていたが僕が入った時に皆帰り中だった。ちょっと落ち着いたら、僕と他の3人のお客さんしかいなかった。一緒にカウンターでマジックを見ることになった。

Katsuya Mizusawa, very good magician.

The magician performing for us was Katsuya Mizusawa, or Katchan as he asked us to call him. He was great. He did the best fork bending I have seen so far (and every place in Tokyo included fork bending so I have seen many magicians do it), and managed to bend a spectator's signed coin without me noticing. He is also excellent at cigarette magic. He managed to hide a burning cigarette in his mouth and have us check if we could see it (we could not) when inspecting his mouth up close, and he also drank some tea before producing the cigarette, still burning, from his mouth again. It was also the first time I saw someone swallow lots of needles and a string and then reproducing everything again live.

マジックを見せてくれたマジシャンは水沢克也（カッチャン）だった。凄かった。東京のマジックバーでは、どこに行ってもフォーク曲げ見せられたがカッチャンのフォーク曲げが今まで観たの中で一番凄い。お客さんのコイン（サイン付き）もいつの間にか曲がったし。曲がるんだろと思ったのに、気付かなかった。タバコのマジックも超うまい。燃えてるタバコを口に入れて、近距離で改めて（口にないっぽい）、お茶をちょっと飲んで、また燃えているタバコを出した。針を沢山のんで、糸をのんで、口が空だと見せて、また全部出すマジックを初めて生で見た。

Since everyone figured out I was a magician fairly quickly (anyone coming alone to a magic bar has a very very high chance of being a magician, especially so if they are a foreigner), I was asked to show something to the other customers after Katchan finished. I did an original trick of mine using hiragana (Japanese alphabet) practice cards, which went over very well. After they left I was told the woman in the company was actually a celebrity (so I should have taken a picture together with them!) which I as usual had no idea before being told.

僕もマジシャンだってすぐばれた（1人で来る人なら、マジックをやっている可能性が凄く高いみたい。1人で来る外国人だったらもっと高い）ので、カッチャンのショーの後、僕も他の3人のお客さんに何か見せて下さいと言われた。自分で考えたひらがなトランプを使ったマジックを見せて、結構うけた。その3人が帰ってから、女の人が有名人だよと言われた。そういうのは全然知らないから自分分からなかった。一緒に写真撮れば良かった。

After all the "normal" people had left, Katchan talked to me for over an hour about all kinds of things and also showed some card magic (which he is very very good at but does not normally perform in the bar since every other bar has lots of card magic too). He was very kind, and very nice to talk to.

一般人が帰ってから、カッチャンと長く話せた。凄くいい人そうだ。カードマジックとかも色々見せてくれた。うまいが店でほとんどやらないと言った。他の店でカードマジックが多いので、自分であまりやらないって。会話も上手で、面白かった。

The interior of the bar was fairly small, but nice enough. Especially the counter was very nice. The toilet was very interesting too. There was a 1000 yen bill painted on the floor in a very realistic way, so it looked like someone had dropped some money there. Trying to pick it up, you found out it was just a painting.

店のインテリアが割と狭かったがきれいだった。特にカウンターが良かった。トイレも面白かった。床にかなりリアルに1000円札が描いてあった。取ろうとしたら、あれ？本物ではない。

Magic bar review: Magic Bar Surprise ・マジックバーサプライズ

On the February 22, 2011, I went to Akasaka in Tokyo to visit Magic Bar Surprise. I got there pretty much at the time they opened, and there were not many customers there yet. It increased as the time grew later, though.

2011年2月22日に東京の赤坂にあるマジックバーサプライズという店に行った。早い時間に着いたので、入った時にお客さんがほとんどいなかった。遅くなったら、沢山入ったけど。

Alice and me

I was lucky and got to see many more magicians than normal. I had gone to Surprise for two reasons, they open early so no other magic bars are open, and they have many female magicians working there. This is not so common, so one of my Sapporo magician friends said that I had to go there and see if they are any good. They day I went there, two girls were scheduled as the normal performers, Sachi and Alice. Apart from them, the owner of the bar, Ryuusei Kamiguchi, was also there and when he heard that I was a magician coming all the way from Sapporo (and being non-Japanese, and able to speak Japanese) he also performed quite a lot of magic for me despite not actually being supposed to be there that day. Finally, there were two guest magicians in the bar that night, Taji -magic (appearing on TV in Japan quite a lot lately) and a woman slightly older than me with the stage name Wakaba. Everyone performed for me.

普通の日よりマジシャンが沢山いたので、タイミングでラッキーだった。サプライズに行く理由が2つあった。第1早い時間からやっているので、他のマジックバーがまだやっていない時にも行けるし。第2女性マジシャンが多い。女性マジシャンが割りと少ないので、札幌のマジシャンにサプライズに行って、女の子たちがちゃんとマジック出来るか、観て来てって言われた。当日、スケジュール通りのマジシャンは女性マジシャン2人、「さち」と「アリス」、だった。オーナーの上口龍生さんもたまたまバーに来ていて、札幌からのマジシャン（外国人だし、日本語も通じるし）が来たと聞いたら、マジックも結構長いパフォーマンスやってくれた。そして、ゲストマジシャン2人もいた。最近テレビでも見られているタジマジックと「若葉」という女性マジシャンもいた。5人、皆マジック見せてくれた。

The bar itself is very nice. They have a small counter, and very nice looking white sofas with low tables. At first I was sitting at a sofa table with some older Japanese man watching magic there, and was moved to the counter with some other customers later when the bar became full.

店が結構きれいだ。割と小さなカウンターがあって、きれいなソファー席も沢山あった。最初はソファーで座っていたが店が込んできた時にカウンターに移動された。

The magic was pretty nice. First Sachi showed me some magic, which was mostly fairly simple standard tricks but performed well. Alice also performed things that looked fairly simple, but quite a few tricks had original presentations that I had not seen before. Ryuusei showed some very impressive coin magic, produced lots of hamburgers, and in general performed mainly magic that I have never seen anyone else perform. Entertaining, too. Ms. Wakaba showed me a few tricks at the counter, and they were entertaining (though not very advanced). Finally, Taji-magic did a lot of mental magic like card tricks that were probably impossible or uninteresting for "normal" people to try to keep up with, just because he knew I was a magician. Some of it was quite impressive, but some was so complex in the setup that at the end you did not know if it was surprising that whatever happened or if that was what could be expected (you no longer had any idea what was going on). For normal people he does completely different magic I was told. All of his magic was highly original.

マジックが結構良かった。トップバッターのさちさんがスタンダード的なマジックを見せてくれたが見せ方がきれいだった。アリスちゃんも簡単そうなマジックを見せてくれたがストーリーがオリジナルで僕が聞いたことなかったのが多かった。上口さんが凄いコインマジックを見せてくれたし、ハンバーガーを沢山出したし、色々なマジックを見せてくれた。全部オリジナルな感じで、見たことないマジックだった。面白かったし。若葉さんもカウンターでちょっとマジックを見せてくれた。シンプルなネタだったが面白かった。最後にタジマジックさんが色々見せてくれた。メンタルネタが多かった。凄いのもあったがセッティングが複雑過ぎて、オチまで来たらそのオチが不思議か普通もそうなるか、もう分からないのも色々あった。僕もマジシャンだと知っていたからマジシャン相手の難しいマジックをやったそうだ。一般人には全然違うマジックをやるらしい。タジマジックさんのマジックも全部オリジナルだった。

I was trying to be a "good" spectator but when I was asked to select a card from apparently 52 cards fanned in front of me for a mental effect, the cards where shoved up so close to my face that I could not see that the same 8 cards where repeated over and over again, but then again I could not distinguish hearts from diamonds in the fan (only a small part of the index was showing) and apparently "saw" a card that was not actually in the deck and spoiled the trick... Even though it was not on purpose and I don't think it was my fault I still felt a bit bad when I realized that I was thinking of a card that had not been in the deck.

いいお客さんにしようとしたがある時にカードを見て一枚覚えて下さいと言われた時に、カードのファンが目のすぐ近くになっていたから本当は同じ8枚が何回も繰り返してることがばれないようになっていたが近すぎて、ハートとダイヤの区別もつかなかったので、僕が観たカードが結局デックに入っていなかった（ダイヤの7とハートの7の見間違え）。申し訳ないことで、そのマジックがうまくいかなかったね…自分で「あ、見間違えたんだろ！」って気付いたら、恥ずかしかった。まぁ、僕のせいではなかったと思うがそれでも、デックに入っていないカードを選ぶって申し訳なかった。

Anyway, the interior design was very nice, the price was fairly standard for Tokyo (6000 yen for free drinks, or 3000 yen table charge and buying a few drinks for one or two thousand yens total if you do not drink that much), the magicians were all very nice, and the magic was good. It was a nice experience. The place is a little out of the way compared to other magic bars in Tokyo (Shinjuku and Roppongi has a lot of other things to do, Ginza has a lot of magic bars), it is easy enough to get there by subway and there are shops/restaurants/bars nearby too.

店のインテリアーがきれいだった。値段が普通だった（飲み放題6000円、チャージ3000円に1000～2000円で何杯か飲むのも出来る）。マジシャンが皆優しかった。マジックも面白かったし、上手だったし。面白い夜だった。場所は他に行くことがないところだが地下鉄で行きやすい。レストラン・バー・服屋、周りに色々ある。

And how about the reason I was sent there, all the female magicians? Compared to the best magicians I have seen, they were not at all on the same level, but they were pretty good.

行く理由第2、女性マジシャン、結局どうだった？僕が観たトップレベルのマジシャンと比べたら、完全に女性マジシャンたちが負けるが、結構良かった。

Tenyo 2012, the third eye ・テンヨー２０１２年、ザ・ザードアイ

Yet another update on the Tenyo 2012 item "The third eye". I have been using this a lot in our magic bar lately, and it is great. Sadly, people often drop the eye when you hand it to them to put between their eyes (or when they hand it to someone else). This has led my third eye to be very glitchy. I though it was broken first, but it started working again later.

またテンヨーの２０１２年の新作品のザ・ザードアイの話なんだが最近マジックバーでよく使っている。うけがいい！残念ながら、お客さんに渡してから、お客さんがよくあの目を落とすんだ。僕の目が光らなくなったから壊れたと思ったが自然に治った。接触が悪くなったと思う。

Anyway, apart from it having to be handed out to drunk people and the risk of them dropping it (breaking your expensive toy), it is highly recommended. It does not work that well with only one or two spectators, but the larger the group the greater the impact. You explain that anyone with this eye between their eyes can see where the selected card is, and when the first person to use the eye slightly suprisedly says "Yes, I can see it!" the other people get curious. They still cannot see anything out of the ordinary. You have one more person try it, and go "Ah, I see it!". People get even more excited, since they still cannot see anything. This keeps building, so the more people the better!

酔っ払いに落とされて壊れる恐れ以外はかなりのおすすめだ。お客さんが１～２人しかいない時にあまりうけないが人が多いと凄くうける。この目を自分の目の間に付けると選んだカードがどこにあるか、分かるよって説明して、最初のお客さんが「あ！分かる！」と言ったら、他の人がちょっとテンションあがる。自分にはまだ見えない。２人目も「分かる！」と言ったら、もっと「何？何？」ってテンションあがる。人が多ければ、どんどん盛り上がって行く！

I think I will go and buy myself one more of these wonderful toys, since the first one seems quite unreliable by now.

この素晴らしいザ・ザードアイも一個を買いに行こうかな？持っているのは信頼性がちょっと低くなった。

Cake!

Yesterday there was a birthday dinner for all the people in our magic bar (staff, regulars, etc.) that had their birthday in October or November. We had lots of nice food, a cake, and presents!

昨日、うちのマジックバーの関係者の誕生日会があった。10月・11月生まれの人のお祝い。美味しいものいっぱい食べれた。プレゼントも貰ったし！

Five magicians (and at least two more that do magic from time to time) celebrating birthdays.

I got an umbrella that looks like a katana (samurai sword), and 103 decks of cards of the design I like best! Apparently my friends have scoured the whole city, calling every Daiso shop in Sapporo (and other cities like Obihiro) and reserved every deck of this type available. I also got a (long) list of all the Daiso they had checked. A great present, but a little heavy to lug home.

The stage

Last year I went with some stand-up comedy performers to Otaru, our neighboring city, and did a magic show for kids there. The organizer of that event was impressed enough to ask me to do a show this year too, so on Saturday I did two magic shows in the Capo shopping mall in Sapporo.
去年、小樽に行って、お笑いの団体と一緒に子供イベントでマジックショーをした。その時のオーガナイザーに印象が良かったみたいで、今年も呼ばれて、土曜日に札幌にあるキャポというモールでステージマジックショーをした。

I went there with a friend, since doing a 30 minute show for kids is very tiring if you are alone. At least for young kids, I have to keep being in a very excited state the whole time or they lose focus. Me and my friend did two 30 minute stage magic shows, and since there were two of us it was not that tiring. He was planning to show up in a suit, but forgot the shirt and jacket so he looked quite funny in his suit trousers and a very worn t-shirt.

30分のショーを2回やって、子供がメインでお願いしますって言われた。僕が子供にマジックを見せる時にずっとテンション高くしないと子供が飽きちゃうので、30分のショーで疲れる。だから、マジシャン友達と行って、2人で30分のステージショーを2回やった。友達がスーツで行くともりだったが結局スーツのズボンしかなかった。ワイシャツもジャケットも忘れた。うける。

For the first show there were about 30 people when we started, and some more joined in during the show. Many kids. Some of the stuff we thought was hysterically funny ourselves did not seem to be understood by the kids, or at least not thought to be funny. Most things were fine, though.

最初のショーが始まった時に観客30人くらいいた。ショー中にも何人か入ってきた。子供が多かった。私たちで凄く面白いと思ったネタで全く伝わらなかったのが何個かあった。やっぱり子供が分からないギャグだったかな？多い方がうけたけど。

For the second show, we threw out half of the material (things no one laughed at etc.) and put in lots of other things instead. Going out to the stage the second time, there were slightly more people but almost no kids... So all our funny gags that we removed would probably have worked with this audience... Oh well, people were happy enough with the stuff we did, haha.

2回目の時に、うけなかったネタとかを抜いて、新しいネタ色々入れて、内容半分くらい変えた。ステージに行ったら、今回人がもうちょっといたが子供が少なかった…やっぱり今回ギャグとか使えたかもしれないなって思った、笑。タイミング悪かった。それでもうけが結構良かった。

The magic show was apparently more of a big thing than I had thought, and we saw a poster with a picture of me in the elevator etc. An acquaintance of mine showed up in the audience, and had apparently just come to do shopping with his wife but seen the promo material for our show and swung by to watch. Sadly, the weather was great on Saturday, so most families with kids were playing outside, not coming to the mall.

うちらのマジックショーが思ったより大きなイベントになっていたみたい。残念ながら、天気が凄く良かったから市民の多い方が外で遊んでいたみたいだけど。でも、エレベータの中で結構大きなポスターに僕の写真とか載っていた。知り合いもたまたま奥さんと買い物をしに来たが何かのポスターで僕の名前を見たので、見に来てくれた。

We did lots of magic, but things that went over really well with both audiences included: a jumbo size home made Macomical deck that I made with cute animal characters instead of playing cards; using a "Dream bag" to try to produce a dove but only producing lots of boxes of flowers instead (and my friend finally produced a dove from his mouth); the disappearing bottle gag/magic trick; producing cards from your mouth; producing lots of Pikachu-shaped sponges.

Yesterday I went to a place called Cocktail Bar Harada with a friend. We had heard that the son of the owner does magic there. The bar turned out to be very nice. The interior design was very pretty, the selection of drinks was extraordinary, and the staff were very nice and fun to talk to. Harada Sr. used to work in the bar in Grand Hotel before, he told us. Harada Jr. has lived in Canada and travelled to many countries (and speaks excellent English).

昨日「カクテルバー原田」という店に友達と行った。オーナーの息子がバーでマジックをやっていると聞いた。バーのインテリアとか、凄く綺麗だった。飲み物の種類も想像つかないくらい沢山あったし、スタッフも優しかったし、会話もうまかったし、いい店だ。オーナーの原田さんが前にグランドホテルのバーで働いていたそうだ。息子さんがカナダにも住んだことあって、色々な国に旅行で行ったことがあるそうで、英語も上手だった。

We sat down at the counter and ordered apple-mango-juice and ginger ale. Having two people come to a bar and order only soft drinks is probably not that common, so we were asked what we were doing there. We said we had heard that one could see magic there... "OK, let's do some magic!"

カウンターに座って、アップルマンゴジュースとジンジャーエールを頼んだ。2人でバーに入ってソフトドリンク頼むのがおかしいので、何で来たの？って聞かれたくらい、笑。マジック見せて貰えると聞いたんですけど…いいよ、やります！って。

Harada Jr. showed us quite a lot of magic. He performed close up magic at the counter for us for about 30 minutes. There was a bar bet with coins and a cocktail glass, a ring and chain thing, burning flash paper, rubber band magic, a huge contact lens coming out of his eye, and lots of card tricks. He was very good. He does Lennart Green's topshop very beautifully. It was also the first time I saw anyone in Japan use Tamariz's (probably Tamariz's, since I do not use it I am not 100% sure it was that one) stack. His version of the three card monte was also very clean.

若いほうの原田さんが色々なマジックを見せてくれた。カウンターで30分くらいクローズアップマジックした。コインとカクテルグラスのバーベット・チェーンとリング・輪ゴム・フラッシュペーパー・デカいコンタクトレンズ・沢山のカードマジック、色々あった。上手だった。Lennart Greenのトップショットが凄くきれいだった。Tamarizのシステム（僕が使っていないから、そこまで自信ないんだが多分Tamarizのだった）を使っている日本人も初めてみた。スリーカードモンテの見せ方も良かった。

After the magic we stayed around and the Haradas talked to us (the other customers left during the magic) and we ended up staying almost until midnight. The conversation was entertaining and we talked about Sweden, living abroad (Canada), and "mysterious things". The younger Harada said he has always liked mysteries, so we talked about crop circles, UFOs, Nessie, huge bones from giant humans, etc.

マジックの後も原田2人と長く喋った。他のお客さんが皆マジック中の時に帰った。スウェーデンや海外に住む生活（カナダ）やミステリーのことに関しての話で楽しかった。息子さんが若い時からずっと不思議なことに興味があって、ミステリーサークルやユーエフオーやネッシーやデカ人間の骨の話とかがあった。

Two weeks from now they will do a close up magic show in the bar which I would love to go to. It is cheap too. Unfortunately, I will be in Europe at the time so I cannot go. The flier they had was pretty funny in that "Close up magic show" was written as "Close masic show"too.

2週間後にクローズアップマジックショーも店でやるんだ。見に行きたい！安いし。だけど、その日にまだヨーロッパにいるので、行けない。チラシにちょっと面白いスペルミスもあって、面白かった、笑。

I love the BBC show "Fool us" where lots of magicians try to fool Penn & Teller, veteran magicians. Here is a clip from the very first show where the heads of two birds are exchanged. The trick is not that hard to figure out, but the performance is just so great! I love this type of magic.

イギリスのBBCテレビ局の「Fool us」という番組が大好きだ。「Penn & Teller」というマジシャン組を騙そうとするマジシャンがいっぱい出て、面白いマジックを見せる。最初の番組からの動画を今日見つけて、鶏とアヒルの頭を入れ替えるマジックなんだ。ちょっと考えたら、分かるマジックなんだが、パフォーマンスが最高に面白い！こういうマジック大好き！

An unexpected request

This weekend we had lots of people in our magic bar both Friday and Saturday. On Saturday an older man handed me an unopened package with a magic prop after my magic performance for him and his wife. He asked me to show him how a pro would use this. He had bought it in a magic shop here in Sapporo earlier that same day. He is friends with the owner (as am I).

今週末にうちのマジックバーが忙しかった。土曜日にあるパフォーマンスが終わったら、お客さんに新品のマジック道具を渡されて、「プロの使い方を見せて下さい」と言われた。見たことない道具だったし、自分がプロだと思っていないし、ちょっとどうしようと思ったが何かなるんだろと思った、笑。お客さんがその日に札幌のマジックショップに行って、買ったそうだ。オーナーと仲良いそうだ（僕もそうだ）。

I had never seen this thing before, and I would not describe myself as a pro, but why not take a look? Once opened, it turned out to be similar to a "coin purse becomes a tiny coin purse" that I have been playing around with lately. The actual prop is a die that you can squish into a flat die. I did an improvised performance using this prop and he seemed very impressed. I found it funny enough that I am now thinking of buying myself one of those too :-)

開けてみたら、僕が最近ちょっと遊んでいたガマ口が小さくなるネタと似ているものだった。お客さんのネタはフラットになるサイコロだった。ちょっと適当にやってみた。お客さんがそれに感動したみたい。「さすがプロの見せ方が違うね！」って。道具も面白かったから僕も買いに行こうかと今考えている、笑。

Magic dinner show with Toto ・都々さんのマジックディナーショー

Yesterday magician Toto from Toto's bar in Ginza (Tokyo) came to Sapporo and did a dinner show at APA Hotel. He is doing a tour of various APA hotels all over Japan. Toto is a great entertainer and he also appears regularly at the Magic Castle in Hollywood.

昨日銀座にある都々’ｓ Barからのマジシャン都々が札幌のAPAホテルでマジックのディナーショーをした。色々なAPAホテルのツアーをしているみたい。都々さんが凄く面白いエンターテイナーだ。アメリカのMagic Castleという店でもレギュラーとして毎年出ています。

I have seen Toto twice in his bar in Ginza, and it is was great both times. His dinner show here in Sapporo was also very entertaining.

銀座で都々さんのバーで都々さんのマジックを2回見たことがある。2回とも凄かった。ディナーショーも面白かった。

First there was about an hour of free drinks and buffe style food. The food was pretty good. Then they rolled out all the tables and put in lots of chairs instead. Toto then did about an hour of magic. There were things like scarves flying through the air over the heads of the audience and then back to the stage, an escape number when a tied up Toto ended up in someone else's dinner jacket, Toto's excellent bill switch (bills of money keep changing into different bills and the number of bills change in mysterious ways), doves appeared and disappeared, a table floated around, and much more.

最初に1時間くらいのバイキングと飲み放題があった。食べ物も美味しかった。その後、テーブルを片づけて、椅子を用意してくれた。都々さんが1時間くらいのマジックショーをした。客席の上にハンカチが飛んで都々さんに戻った。ロープの脱出のマジックもあった。都々さんの超不思議なビルスイッチ（お札のマジック）もあった。鳩が出たり消えたりした。テーブルが浮きだした。他にも色々あった。

Toto does magic very well, but more than that he is very good at presenting magic in an entertaining way. His use of music etc. is also very good.

都々さん、マジックが上手だがそれより見せ方に感動する。盛り上がる。音楽の使い方とかもうまい。

After the magic show there was also a lottery where you could win strange things like 24 bottles of APA hotel water, software for Nintendo DS (less useful if like me you do not have a DS), or a pack of 40 eggs. One of my friends got a large bag of coffee.

ショーの後、スポンサーからのものの抽選会もあった。わけ分からないものもいっぱいあった。水のペットボトル24本とか？玉子40個セットや任天堂DSのソフト。友達がコーヒーのセットあたった。

When the event finished, me and some magicians and regulars from our magic bar went to a bar to continue drinking. After a while we got a call from Toto that his group that were eating sashimi somewhere wanted to meet up with our group and we ended up drinking with them in a third place. Toto is also very nice and interesting to talk to when he is not performing.

イベントの後はマジックバーの同僚や常連さんと飲みに行った。ちょっとしたら、都々さんから電話も掛かってきた。どこかで刺身を食べてたが一緒に飲みたいって。別の店で集合して、都々さんのチームと飲むことになった。パフォーマンス中だけではなく、プライベートでも結構面白いんだ。

Yesterday I stopped by the bar "Hou" in Sapporo with a magician friend, since we first met there and they had a Halloween party (that was pretty much over by the time we got there, but still). The staff told us that there was another magician working in Hou doing magic that night, so we asked to see him. He did some card magic tricks (two aces change into two queens when held by the spectator, a signed card goes to the pocket over and over again) and a coin trick (Chinese coins threaded on a string mysteriously unlink from the string).

昨日「宝」（「ほう」）というバーにマジシャン友達と行った。初めて会った時に宝のパーティーで会った。昨日ハロウィーンパーティーがあったが入った時にパーティーがもう終わっていたくらい。知っているスタッフに「今日マジシャンがここで働いているよ」と言われたからその人にマジック見せて欲しいと言った。マジシャンがカードマジック（エース2枚がクイーン2枚にお客さんの手の中入れ変わる・サインカードが何回もポケットに入る）やコインマジック（紐に付けたチャイニーズコインが不思議なように紐から取れる）を見せてくれた。

We also asked him where he was from (Shiroishi, the same place my friend is from, they even went to the same junior high school), how long he has been doing magic (12 years), where he works (the bar Gundam in Sapporo among other places; and he used to work at the bar "12ji" in Tokyo, which my friend and I have visited twice). We also asked him what tricks he does with rubber bands, since he had a lot of them stuck to his props. He showed some rubber band magic too, and then performed one more card trick (oil-and-water, in the spectator's hands, a very clean version).

色々聞いてみた。どこ出身？（札幌白石区、僕の友達と同じ中学校だった）。マジック歴？12年間。どこでやっている？すすきのにあるガンダムというバー。前に東京にある十二時というマジックバーで働いていたそうだ。友達と2回行ったことある。マジック道具に輪ゴム沢山付いていたから、輪ゴムのマジックはどんなのをやるかも聞いてみた。輪ゴムのマジックもちょっと見せて貰った。最後にお客さんの手の中にやる「水と油」のカードマジックもしてくれた。凄いきれいなやり方だった。

He told me his name, but since the party surrounding us was very very noisy I am not entirely sure what he said. I figured my friend would remember but apparently he did not, so I am still unsure what the magician's name was. [Update: his name is (probably) Myousai] Anyway, he was pretty good. Though from my seat you could see when he did the pass, when he palmed cards, and sometimes coins flashing. I was very impressed by the oil-and-water trick, though.

名前も言われたが周りがうるさくて、よく聞き取れなかった。友達が日本人なので、後で聞いてみようと思ったが友達が覚えていないみたい。だから、何という人だったがよく分からない。[名前は（多分）「妙才」だと言われた] 結構上手だった。僕の席からパス・パームが見えたけど。たまにコインのフラッシュもあった。最後のオイル・アンド・ウォーターが感動したけど。

On Sunday October 30, we had the Sapporo Zombie Walk here in Sapporo. I participated and dressed up as a zombie. After that, I was invited to a Halloween party at a friends house, and of course went there in my zombie outfit. I had some time to kill, so on the way to the party I also stopped by the Magic Shop Mebius here in Sapporo. It is a magic shop and I know the owner. He was very surprised by my looks, and had me posing with lots of weird props for 10 minutes or so.

日曜日（10月30日）に札幌で札幌ゾンビ・ウォークというイベントがあった。僕もゾンビの格好して、参加した。その後、友達の家であったハロウィーンパーティーにも誘われた。勿論、ゾンビのまんまで行った。ちょっと時間があったので、途中にマジックショップメビウスにも入った。マジックショップで、僕とオーナーさんが仲良い。オーナーが僕の姿を見て、かなりびっくりした。10分くらい色々な道具とポーズとったりして、写真撮られた。

I only knew one person at the party, though I had met one more once at a fireworks festival. The other 10 or so participants were all new to me, but they had apparently heard a lot of stories about me from my friend. Among other things, they knew I was a magician, so they asked me to show them something.

パーティーで知っている人が1人しかいなかった。もう1人は一回花火大会で会ったことがあったけど。他の1人くらいはあったこともなかったが逆に彼らは僕の話を色々僕の友達から聞いたことがあったらしい。マジシャンだって、皆知っていた。何か見せて！って言われた。

I tried using cards, but with my fingers covered in paint and fake blood, this was quite difficult. I did two of my usual card tricks from the magic bar that do not require that much in difficult moves (since cards were sticking to me at times, and refusing to move when I tried to move them at other times, that too was a bit of a challenge :-) that go over well. I also did a few rubber band tricks, and a coin and pen routine that I like. Sticking the pen behind my ear that is usually so easy turned out to almost fail catastrophically since my ears/hair/face were caked in hardened syrup/fake blood/paint.

カードを使おうとしたが指にペンキも血（本物ではないけど）も沢山付いていたから難しかった。マジックバーでよくやるカードネタ２つ（指先の難しいことがあまり必要ないネタ）やった（カード指にくっついたりして、カードを動かそうとしても動かせないとか、それでも結構なチャレンジだった、笑）。うけのいいネタで、今回もうけが良かった。輪ゴムのマジックもちょっとやった。僕が結構好きなペンとコインのルーティンもやったがペンを耳に刺す時に普段凄い簡単なのに、大失敗になりそうだった、笑。耳・髪の毛・顔、全部ペンキ・血・シロップのかたまりも付いていたから、意外と難しかった。

All in all, everyone seemed happy with my performance, and they said it was the first time they ever saw a zombie do magic. It was fun and interesting for me to, trying to adopt to the circumstances of almost not being able to use your hands. Or anything else.　Next time, I should do the "Zombie ball" trick, I guess.

皆喜んでくれたみたい。ゾンビがマジックをやるのは初めて見たって、笑。僕も、面白い経験になった。手がほとんど使えなくて（手だけではなかったし）、だいぶ難しい状況に合わせる経験になった。また今度、ゾンビ・ボールしなきゃね！

Tenyo 2012, The third eye ・テンヨー2012年、ザ・サードアイ

This weekend I tried using the Tenyo "The third eye" props in the magic bar. Someone selects (while looking at the faces) a card from a set of five (with things like "love", "money", "fame", written on them) and no one except this person knows what card is selected. The card is returned, the cards are shuffled a little, and I place the cards on a stand.

先週末にテンヨーの新作品の「ザ・サードアイ」をマジックバーで使ってみた。お客さん1人が見て、5枚の中から1枚選ぶ。他の人誰も知らない1枚。カードを返して、5枚を軽く混ぜる。僕がその5枚をスタンドにたてる。

There is also a plastic eye, that when turned on blinks with a red light. I explain that this is a "magicians eye", and anyone putting this eye on their forehead can see what a magician would see. So anyone doing that can see which card is the selected card, only by watching the backs of the cards. Of course, no one else can see that, though anyone can see it if the receive the eye (and then the person who originally had the eye will no longer see it).

プラスチック製の目もある。赤色で光る。「マジシャンの目なんだ」と説明する。これを自分の目の間に付けるとマジシャンに見えるものが見えてくる。プラスチックの目を頭に付けると裏から見ても誰でも選んだカードがどれだって分かる。勿論、同時に他の人誰でも分からない。他の人でも、その目を使うと分かる。前に目を持っていた人はもう見えなくなる。

People found this fairly fascinating, and it works well as a fun way to kill some time. It is not a very exciting magic trick and no one is surprised by finding one selected card among five, though everyone is amazed at the properties of the magician's eye.

お客さんが基本的にこれが不思議だと思った。面白い時間つぶしになった。衝撃はないけど。5枚の中の1枚をあてることで、驚く人がいないって感じ。そのマジシャンの目が凄い不思議に思われるけど。

So my impression after using it two nights (though I did not use it with very many of our customers) is that is is a quite fun prop to use, and people like it. There is very little "wow"-factor but it is a nice piece. Possibly there are more interesting presentations you can use it for too.

2日間使ってから（そんなに沢山は使っていなかったけど）の印象は、面白い物だ。お客さんもそう思う。ビックリはあまりしないマジックだが面白い時間つぶしにはなる。他のもっと面白い見せ方があるかもしれないけど。

The properties of this (the physics behind it) are quite fascinating to me as a magician too.

物理的な原因も、マジックのやり方を知っていても結構凄いと思う。

Birthday

Saturday (October 29) was my birthday. It was also a very very busy day in the magic bar. The day started with a group of 20, which is tiring in itself. At the same time there were people coming in small number too. There were other large groups coming later too, and our magic bar was pretty much full from opening until 1 A.M. or so. We even had to put people who did not know each other at the same table since we ran out of seats. And we had to turn away 10 people or so (on a normal "good" day, we get between 10 and 20 guests, so turning away 10 is quite a lot; though we get slightly more people on weekends).

土曜日（10月29日）は僕の誕生日だった。マジックバーで非常に忙しい日だった。オープンから20人の団体も少人数の人も来た。団体だけで疲れる。その後も10人とかの団体も来たし、カップルとかも沢山来たし、午前1時までずっと忙しかった。ほぼ満席だったから、初めてお客さんが知らない人と相席になったり…入らないお客さん10人もいた（普通なら、1日に10～20人しか来ないから、多い。週末はもうちょっと来るけど）。

Happy Birthday ヨーナス (Jonas)

At around 1 A.M. when things were calming down, one of my colleagues produced a cake and said "Today is Jonas's birthday! Happy Birthday!" Right when I finished blowing out the candles, more customers appeared and we had to put the cake back in the refrigerator right away, though...

1時頃にやっとちょっと落ち着いたら（トイレに行くチャンス！）、同僚がケーキを出して、「ヨーナスの誕生日だ！おめでとうございます！」と叫んだ。ろうそくを消した瞬間、またお客さんが沢山入ってきた。ケーキをすぐまた冷蔵庫にしめた…

At around 3 A.M. it finally calmed down again, and I could have some cake. Two of our regular guests also brought tai-yaki (fish shaped waffles with sweet fillings) for us that day (unrelated to my birthday, though).

3時頃にまたやっと落ち着いたから、ケーキ食べれた。常連さん2人もタイ焼きを持って来てくれた（僕の誕生日と全く関係なかったけど）。

On the cake, "Happy birthday" was written in Latin letters and my name in Japanese... In our magic bar, if people ask for my name I usually reply "Jonas, as in the 'you' from Hokuyou-ginkou and the 'nasu' from nasubi". Japanese people often explain what Chinese characters they write their names with, since there are many possibilities for writing what is pronounced as the same name. I deliberately chose two words that people would not normally use to exemplify (the name of a bank and the word for eggplant), which sounds funny to Japanese people. So my colleague wanted the cake to say my name like that (洋茄子) but decided it would probably not be possible to get the cake shop people understand that over the phone, so we ended up with the usual ヨーナス. "Jonas" would have worked for me too, though :-)

ケーキに「Happy birthday」ローマ字で書いてあったが僕の名前がカタカナだった。マジックバーで「お名前は何ですか？」と聞かれると、だいたい「ヨーナス。北洋銀行のヨウになすびのナス、ヨーナス」と言う（北海道で茄子のことはなすびと言うんだ。方言かな？）。ヨーナスだけ言ったら、名前に聞こえないから日本人に伝わらないことが多い。ヨーナ？とか…北洋銀行やなすびで例えるのがうけるみたい。

同僚がその例え方が凄く好きみたいで、ケーキに「Happy birthday 洋茄子」と書いて欲しかったそうだが電話で伝わらないと思っていたからカタカナにしたそうだ。ローマ字の「Jonas」でもいいんだけどね、笑。

Yesterday I went to the magic "snack bar" Ropossa (Sapporo read in reverse, in Japanese, sa-double consonant-po-ro --> ro-po-double consonant-sa). A snack bar is basically a bar with a high entry fee or high prices that also includes the "mama" and the other staff talking to you and entertaining you. So it could be for instance a bar with flirty waitresses. Ropossa is a bar where the mama does magic for you. She does not call herself a magician, and says that the place is not a magic bar, though.

昨日、ロポッサ（札幌の逆読み）というマジックスナックに行った。ママがマジックをやってくれるスナックだ。マジシャンではないと言っている。マジックバーではないって、言っている。だが、結構レベル高いマジック見れる。

Food

It costs 3000 yen to visit Ropossa, and this also gets you some food, and free drinks for your whole visit. If you are a magician, mama will generally not do magic for you (she thinks she is not good enough, which is not true), but they will pepper you with strange toys, puzzle boxes that just wont open no matter what you try, intellectual puzzles, novelty items, and lots more. Very exhausting! And very entertaining. You can also watch as mama performs magic to other customers, including lots of sponge rabbits, sponge penises, balloon swallowing, and spoon bending.

ロポッサの料金が3000円だ。飲み放題とフード付きだ。マジシャンだとばれたら、ママがだいたいマジックをやらない（マジシャンに見せる自信がないそうだ。全然大丈夫なのに…）。開かない箱・パズル系おもちゃ・知恵の輪・ギャグネタ・ゲーム、色々な面白い物があるけど。頭が疲れる！でも、面白い！ママが他のお客さんにマジックをやるのも観れるし。ウサギのスポンジ・ち○このスポンジ・スプーン曲げ・風船呑み、色々なマジック観れる。

They have lots of strange games and interesting novelty items to play with too. Yesterday they showed me some toys made from old used milk cartons. You fold the carton and put it on a table and after awhile it will jump into the air. They also had a box full of these toys, that when opened spewed out a fountain of milk carton pieces jumping wildly into the air.

ゲームやおもちゃも沢山ある。昨日見せて貰ったのが、牛乳パックで作られたおもちゃだった。折りたたんで、テーブルの上に置けば、ちょっと時間が経つとパックが凄い勢いで飛ぶ。箱の中に牛乳パックのおもちゃを沢山入れて、箱を開くと噴水みたいに沢山飛び出て来る。

Yesterday we had the "full routine" rehearsal of our magic performances for the Christmas show of the university magic club. My rehearsal went OK I think, and there is still more than a month left to practice.

昨日、大学のサークルのクリスマスショーの「フル手順リハーサル」があった。僕のパフォーマンスがまあまあ大丈夫だったと思う。まだ1カ月以上あるしね。

Funny Magic Clips: Helt Magiskt episode 3

Since I was away in Osaka and then got super busy at work when coming back, I just watched the third episode of "Helt Magiskt" now (the fourth episode already aired, I think). The third episode was also very nice. The sketch book magic performance that I talked about before was apparently from this third episode.

大阪旅行もあったし、帰ってから仕事が非常に忙しくなったし、スウェーデンのテレビの「Helt Magiskt」のエピソード３がただいま観た。エピソード４がもう放送されたと思う。今回も良かった。例えば、前にブログで書いたスケッチブックのマジックが今週の番組のパフォーマンスだった。

Joe Labero and the tennis star Jonas Björkman did a nice illusion where a huge number of people came out of a small box, they did some "street magic" in a tennis hall where the non-magician too got to do some nice things (bouncing a smoke filled soap bubble using a tennis racket with no strings), and they did a cut and restored necktie finishing with the non-magician pulling the shirt off of the audience member (while he still had his jacket on). I liked the street magic performance best, but all three performances were nice.

Joe Laberoさんがテニス選手のJonas Björkmanさんとペアになって、小さな箱から有り得ないほど沢山の人を出した。テニスホールでストリートマジックとして、面白いパフォーマンスもした。特にマジシャンではない方もちゃんとしたマジックをしたから結構好きだった（煙が入ったシャボン玉を網の分がないテニスのラケットで浮かしていた）。最後に切ったネクタイの復活とお客さんがまだジャケットを着ていた時にテニス選手がお客さんのワイシャツを取った。

Michael Halvarson and Sara Sommerfeldt did an excellent street magic performance, where first the non-magician made a coin disappear from the hand of a spectator without touching, and then the magician did some pick-pocketing. They also did a funny rope trick/spirit cabinet performance that I liked very much. The final illusion was a woman in a small box that then is punched through with things so there would seem to be no more space for her. I liked the fact that the non-magician had to do so much magic throughout all their performances, and that they were very funny!

Michael Halvarsonさんと女優のSara Sommerfeldtさんが面白いストリートマジックを見せてくれた。女優さんがお客さんの手に置いてあったコインを触らずにきれいに消した。マジシャンがピックポケットもした。ロープマジックの有名な演目の凄く面白いバーションもした。大好きだった、笑。最後に小さな箱に女優さんが入って、マジシャンが箱に色々刺して、もう居るところがないって感じのイリュージョンもした。喋りがまた面白かった。マジシャンではない人も結構本格的なマジックを沢山やっているのが好きなので、良かった。喋りというかストーリも凄く良かった。

The final couple was Charlie Caper and Ylva Hällen. As I mentioned in a previous post about their street magic performance, that was really really great. They also did an escape under dangerous conditions thing, which I am not very interested in personally (but the "training session" footage they had in the show was very funny :-) Their third performance was great. They fished live gold fish out of the audience members' bags, the magician lost his bow tie (Charlie Caper almost always does) and the non-magician lost her shoe at some unknown point in time and suddenly these things appeared out of a suitcase. Which also sucked the clothes of the magician when he got too close. A very well thought out story line! Again, I like the performances where the non-magician ends up doing a lot of magic, which these were.

最後のペアはCharlie CaperさんとYlva Hällenさんだった。前に感動したスケッチブックのストリートマジックが凄く良かったね。脱出のマジックもしたが僕は個人的に脱出にはあまり興味がない。そのパフォーマンスの「練習」からの動画が非常に面白かったけど、笑。最後に凄くいいパフォーマンスもあった。お客さんのカバンから本物の金魚を釣った。何かのタイミングで、マジシャンの蝶ネクタイとマジシャンではない人の靴が消えた。ステージにあったスーツケースから出て来たがマジシャンがスーツケースの近すぎたところに行ったら、スーツ全部スーツケースに取られた。ストーリが凄く良かった。マジシャンではない方も本格的なマジックをしたし。良かった良かった。

Magic Auction again ･2回目のマジック道具のオークション

While I was busy with things related to my Osaka trip, the magic club at the university had an auction selling off the rest of the stuff left over from the first auction. I wanted some stuff but could not attend... But I had stuck notes to some things before saying things like "Jonas will pay 1000 yen for this", so yesterday our accountant came up to me and said I owed her 6800 yen. After paying, she gave me a bag of stuff from the auction! As usual, the students have no money so no one had outbid me on anything that I had tagged. There was one thing I wanted that I had forgotten to tag though, so someone else got it cheaply I believe.

大阪旅行の何かで忙しかった時に大学のサークルの人がまたオークションをやった。前のオークションから残っていたものを全部オークションした。買いたいものが色々あったが参加出来なかった。出来なかったが、前からテープで「ヨーナスが１０００円出す」とか、色々なものに付けたから、昨日会計の人に「６８００円頂戴」と言われた。払ったら、オークションからの手品道具が入っているバッグを貰った。学生たちが相変わらずお金ないので、テープを付けたもの全部ゲットしたと思う。他に欲しいものも何かあったがテープを付けるの忘れたから誰かが安く買えたんだろね。

I ended up going home with a Svengali style deck that becomes completely white, a handkerchief looking like a 10000 yen bill, a rose on a reel, an English penny triple shell kind of thing, a few sponge eggs, 10 jumbo cards with half naked women, and a "milk becomes a die" illusion thingy. Who decided that "milk becomes a die" was a good idea? Why on earth would it become a die, instead of say icecream, a stuffed cow, or tomato juice? I mean, what does dice and milk have to do with each other? Maybe I am missing some Japanese word play thing, or cultural thing? Who knows...

貰ったものは：スウェンガリタイプの白くなるトランプ・１万円札に見えるハンカチ・リール付きのバラ・イギリスのペニーのシェル・スポンジ玉子・上半身裸の女の人のジャンボカード１０枚・ミルクがサイコロになる道具。だけど、ミルクがサイコロになるって、誰が考えたの？何でミルクがサイコロになるか、わけ分からないね。アイスや牛のぬいぐるみやトマトジュースとかになったら、何とか分かるが、サイコロ？僕が分かっていない日本語の言葉遊びや日本の文化の知らないところ、何かあるかな？よく分からない。

On Sunday I left for Osaka early in the morning (having left our magic bar earlier than normal since my train for the airport left at 6 A.M.). The first day I spent with a friend I first met in Sweden, doing things unrelated to magic. On Monday I met up with another magic maniac from Sapporo and we had a magic tour of Osaka.

日曜日に凄い早起きして（マジックバーから早く（２４時半）帰って、空港行きの６時発の列車に間に合うように）大阪に行った。日曜日はスウェーデンで知り合った日本人の友達とマジックと全く関係ないことしていた。月曜日に札幌からの僕と同じくマジックマニアの友達と待ち合わせて、大阪マジックツアーした。

The first stop was the magic shop French Drop. French Drop is not only a magic shop but also a magic bar. The bar is on the first floor and the shop is on the second. The place was easy to find, but when we entered no one seemed to be there. We shouted "hello" a few times, and the door had bells on it that were noisy etc. but no one showed up. We looked around at the stuff in the shop and later rang a bell again and then had some response. A young and very nice guy showed up and talked to us for awhile.

最初はマジックショップフレンチドロップに行った。フレンチドロップはマジックショップも、マジックバーもあるんだ。１階がバーで、２階がショップだ。場所がすぐ分かった。入って、ドアのベルもなって、「こんにちは！」と何回か呼んだのに誰もいなかった。ショップの商品を色々見て、またテーブルの上にあるベルを鳴らした。今回、若いお兄さんが３階から降りて来た。色々面白い会話をしてくれた。

Me and the famous magician Ponta the Smith

My friend is very fond of the magic of Japanese magician Ponta the Smith, who works at French Drop. Ponta is fairly well known not only in Japan, after his DVD with coin magic ("Sick") became a best seller all over the world. So my friend asked if Ponta was there today, and we were told that he was downstairs in the bar recording things (presentation of new items for the web shop).

友達がポンタという海外でも有名なマジシャンのマジックが大好きだ。ポンタがフレンチドロップで働いているから、友達がスタッフのお兄さんにポンタが今日いるかいないかを聞いた。１階で動画の収録中だと言われた。ウェブショップの商品の紹介の動画。

After he was done downstairs, Ponta came up and spent a long time talking to us. My friend had lots of questions for him. He was very nice and talked about all kinds of things with us. I enjoyed the stories of problems with English when being invited to strange countries all over the world (in the end, London turned out to be the place where it was most difficult to understand what people were saying; go figure (because the natives speak fast)).

収録が終わったら、ポンタが来て結構長く話してくれた。友達が質問沢山あった。色々面白い話があった。僕が海外の発表の依頼の旅行の話が好きだった。英語がよく分からない国が多い。結局一番難しかったのがイギリスのロンドンの時だったそうだ。ネイティブの映画が速くて聞きとりづらいし、ロンドンのなまりがちょっと難しいし。うけるね。

Sapporo UniFes 2011

On Saturday 2011-10-15 I got up a little bit earlier than normal after coming home late from doing magic in Magic Bar Twister. On Saturday the Magic Circle of my university (which I am a member of) was scheduled to do magic at the Sapporo UniFes 2011 event in the Odori-koen park in the middle of Sapporo.

２０１１年１０月１５日に割と早起き（金曜日の夜にマジックバーツイスターでマジックをしていた）して、札幌の大通公園に行って札幌ユニフェスでマジックした。北大のサークル（奇術研究会、僕も入っている）がユニフェスで一般人にマジックを見せていた。

We had our own little tent and any passerby that wanted to see magic could see up to 7 different magicians do their best to entertain them. I mainly targeted small children and produced 19 rabbits out of thin air, and pulled lots of playing cards out of my mouth to get people to notice us. We were there from 10.00 to 16.00 (I was there from 13.15 or so...) and it was a lot of fun.

小さなテントがあって、マジック観たい人がきたら、７人のマジシャンもいた！僕が通っていた子供をメインにして、ウサギ１９羽を出していた。口からトランプを出すマジックもよくやった。遠くから見られても目立つマジックなので、呼び込みみたいに良い。サークルが１０時から１６時マジックをやっていた（僕が１３時１５分から）。

Tenyo 2012, first impression ・テンヨー2012年新作

Today I went to Tokyu Hands to buy some of the magic prop maker Tenyo's new items for 2012. There are five new items for 2012 that I know of, and all were available. I bought the three that interested me most.

今日東急ハンズに行って、手品道具のメーカーのテンヨーの2012年の新作品を色々買った。新しいものが5つあるんだ。ハンズに全部あった。その中の一番気になっていた3つを買った。

I bought the flying carpet, the third eye, and the dice tower (by the way, I am just guessing what the names might be in English, since I have the Japanese version with all instructions/box texts/etc. only in Japanese). I also bought some Pikachu shaped sponges, which are also made by Tenyo. I already had a bunch of those, but the Pikachu are really cute and very popular with children here. You can never have too many, I guess.

「魔法のじゅうたん」・「ザ・サード・アイ」・「タワー・オブ・ダイス」を買った、他にもピカチュのスポンジも買った。それもテンヨーのものだが新しくはない。何個も持っているが可愛いし、子供うけが凄くいいし、沢山買った方がいいかも。

On the way out of the store I ran into a couple where the man said "Ah, the magician!" and pointed at me. The woman said "A magician?", so I guess he has been to our magic bar (he looked familiar) but she has not. He also said, "From Sweden!". I said yes, and that I had just bought a huge bag of magic props so his timing was great. They evidently found that amusing and laughed a lot.

店から出た瞬間、日本人のカップルに見られた。男の方が「あ、マジシャンだ」と言いだした。女の方が「マジシャン？」って。彼が多分うちのマジックバーに来たことあると思う（顔は覚えている）が彼女がそうでもないだろう。彼が「スウェーデンから！」と言ったから、「はい、そうです」と返して、「今手品道具を沢山買ったばかりなので、凄いタイミングでしたね！」と言ったら、2人とも凄い笑ってくれた。

The Flying Carpet・魔法のじゅうたん

The flying carpet is very nice. It consists of a black cloth to put on the floor, a black "landing pad" thingy to put on the black cloth, a bunch of blue stickers that you have to stick to the landing pad, a flying carpet (actually a plastic sheet), two pairs of 3D glasses, and a paper thingy that you will use for comparison so people can see how high you are "flying". This is an optical illusion and everyone will probably realize that that is what it is. It is a great optical illusion though! You stand on the flying carpet, which is placed on the landing pad (which in turn is on the black cloth) and one or two spectators stand about two meters away wearing the glasses. You will seem to be flying, higher than the 10 cm high paper thingy beside the landing pad. The can move around (left-right, move forward and backward) and what they see will be consistent with you and the carpet floating in the air. You can also move the landing pad you have under you which makes it look even more as if you are not standing on the ground. A very very nice optical illusion.

魔法のじゅうたんが好きだ。入っているものが：黒い布・黒のフライングベースみたいなもの・青いシール（ベースに貼る）・魔法のじゅうたん（プラスチック）・3Dメガネ2つ・浮いている高さ分かりやすくするための何かの紙。目の錯覚なんだ。誰でもすぐそう思う（多分）が結構凄い錯覚だ！黒の布の上にベースを置いて、ベースの上に魔法のじゅうたんも置く。自分がじゅうたんに乗って、お客さんが2メートルくらい離れて3Dメガネを掛けると本当に浮いているように見える。10センチくらいの高さの比較のためのものより高く浮いているように見える。お客さんが左右・前後動いてもまだ浮いている感じ。フライングベースをじゅうたんから抜いても大丈夫なので、それでも本当に浮いているって印象になる。素晴らしい錯覚だ。

The Dice Tower・タワーオブダイス

The tower of dice looks like a holder with room for 4 dice and a lid for this. You take off the lid, pour out the dice, and stack them neatly on the table. You then put the lid to one side, and show that the original holder fits exactly over the stack of dice, with (apparently) no room for any more by putting the holder on the stack. When you put the holder over the dice stack a second time, the dice stack grows to 8 dice (a twice as high stack), and the spectators can check that these are real dice. After one clean up move, you can also hand the holder and lid to the spectators. This trick looks great in the Tenyo YouTube video, and the gimmick was not what I had imagined. My first impression is: it felt a little inconvenient holding things the way you are supposed and getting rid of the one secret thing you cannot show to the spectators may be a little tricky in some situations. But with a little practice, this should not be very difficult to perform, I think. Your angles are fairly good.

これがダイス4個の入れ物と入れ物の蓋に見える。蓋を取って、ダイスを出して、テーブルの上でダイスのタワーをたてる。蓋はもう使わない。ダイスのタワーに入れ物をかぶせて、入れ物とダイスのタワーがちょうど同じ大きさだと示す。もう一回かぶせたら、入れ物をタワーから取る時にタワーがダイス8個のもっともっと高いタワーになる。お客さんにダイスを調べて貰っても大丈夫だ（普通なダイスだ）。ちょっとした何かしてから、入れ物と蓋も手渡しできる。ユーチューブの動画で凄くきれいに見える。ギミックは僕が思ったのと違うんだ。最初の印象では、ちょっとおかしい持ち方しないと行けないとギミックの処理がある状況でちょっと大変かもしれないと思った。だが、ちょっろ練習したら、使えそうだ。角度に結構強い。

The Third Eye・ザサードアイ

The third eye seemed like it could be used to have quite a lot of fun together with the spectators in the demo video I had seen. The secret was not exactly what I had guessed, but I was pretty close. You get a plastic eye that blinks with a red light when you turn it on (it is battery powered and you can change the battery once it runs out), three sets of five cards each, and a display stand that you can place the cards in. The basic idea is that you have a spectator select one card out of five and then return this to the stack. These five cards are placed in the display stand and any spectator can immediately see which the chosen card is just by looking at the backs of the cards if they have the third eye placed between their normal eyes. Other spectators will not be able to see it.

動画を観て、ザ・サード・アイが結構面白いように使えると思った。タネは僕が思ったのとちょっと違ったがまあまああっていた。入っているものは：プラスチックの目、スイッチをOnにしたら赤いランプが光る（電池交換可能）・5枚のカードが3セット・5枚が入るディスプレーのもの。基本の手順はお客さんに5枚のカードから一枚選んで貰って、また選んだカードを戻して貰う。5枚をちょっと混ぜて、ディスプレーに入れる。別のお客さんがカードを当てる。サード・アイを自分の目の間に付けると誰でも、カードの裏を見ながら、選んだカードすぐ分かる。サード・アイを付けていない人には見えない。

You have three sets of cards to use, one which has five cards from a normal deck of cards, one that has "how much do you like me/someone else we are talking about" on a scale from 0 to 100%, and one that has love/money/fame/career/something else that I don't remember. You could use cards that you make yourself by reusing a few secret parts from the cards provided, I guess. Though these cards would still have to look a bit suspicious to work. It seems to be fairly easy to reuse the secret parts you would need.

カードが3種類ある。普通なトランプ5枚・「興味ない」「友達でいい」「ちょっといいかも」「大好き」「愛している」的な5枚・「お金」「愛」「仕事」「有名」などの5枚。その15枚から仕掛けを取って、自分で持っているカードに付けるのもまあまあ簡単だと思うがどうしても裏からちょっと怪しく見えないとこのマジック出来ない。

The dirty work you have to do as the magician is easy. There are several ways you could do what needs to be done, and anyone could learn several of these with minimal practice. The angles are very good, though you probably do not want the spectators to look at the faces of the cards in the display stand. The spectator with the third eye ~~will have to be more or less right in front of the cards when he is looking at them (the angles where the third eye work are a bit restricted) but~~ has very generous angles from which to watch the cards, and you can just turn the display to face the spectator in extreme cases ~~and the angles are forgiving enough~~ so that it is very easy ~~not difficult~~ to get the spectator to see what needs to be seen. Other spectators can be fairly close to the one with the third eye and still not see which is the selected card. Placing their eyes very close to the first spectators eyes would make them see it, though.

マジシャンがやっていることが全部簡単だ。色々なやり方でこのマジックに必要なことが出来る。誰でもちょっとだけ練習したら、簡単なやり方が出来ると思う。角度に強い。ディスプレーする時にカードの表がお客さんに見えたら良くないがそれ以外はセーフだ。サード・アイを付けている人が~~カードの裏を真正面くらいから見ないと~~色々な角度から見ても選んだカード~~分からないが~~分かりやすいし、ディスプレーをお客さんに合わせるのが簡単だから問題ない。サード・アイで分かる角度が~~まあまあ~~かなり優しいから、お客さんがちゃんと分かるようにするのが難しくない。他のお客さんがサード･アイのお客さんの結構近くに来ても選んだカード分からないがお客さん同士の目が凄く近ければ、2人とも分かる。

All in all, this seems like it could be quite a lot of fun to use.

全体的な印象は、面白そうだ！使いたい。

The Other Two Items・買っていないもの

Apart from the three things above that I bought, Tenyo also produced two other items. One is an envelope that contains a folded paper that when unfolded turns out to contain a pop-out picture with a pop-out basket. You can the produce a small ball or other small item from this basket, despite the folded card originally being inside the flat envelope. This looks quite nice, but the method seemed completely obvious to me when I saw the demo clip on YouTube, so I think I will build my own instead.

買った3つのもの以外、他にも新しいもの2つあった。封筒の中に折ったカードがあって、カードを開くとポップ・アウトの箱が出てくる。カードがフラットな封筒の中に入っていたのに、マジシャンがボール（や小さなものの何でも）カードに付いている箱から出せる。見た目がきれいだし、現象が面白いと思うし、いいものだと思うがやり方とかすぐ分かった（と思う）。自分で作ってみようと今考えているから買わない。

The last item is a pen on which you can make bills of money rotate. It did not seem like a very interesting effect to me, so I will pass on this one I think. Unless a friend who will buy all of them manages to convince me that it is good :-)

最後のものはペンの上に札を置いて、札が回る。そこまで面白い現象ではないと思ったから、買わない。まぁ、全部買う友達1人がいるから彼に「面白いよ」と言われたら買うかも。

Magician Toto in Sapporo ・マジシャン都々が札幌に来る

On November 6, magician Toto will do a stage magic show here in Sapporo. I have seen him perform in his magic bar in Ginza (creatively named Toto's bar :-), twice, and he is highly entertaining. One of the most entertaining magicians I have seen. He is also a regular performer at the Magic Castle (famous place in L.A.), that I would like to visit some day.

11月6日に都々というマジシャンが札幌に来て、マジックショーをやるんだ。都々さんの銀座にあるマジックバー（都々’s Bar）で2回観たことがある。最高に面白い。僕が行きたい、アメリカにある有名なところの「Magic Castle」でもレギュラーとして出ているし。

I bought a ticket for Toto's Sapporo show today. It was expensive (at least by Sapporo standards, you could visit our magic bar 4 times for the same price), but it includes food and drinks too. Since I expect the show to be great, just the show would probably also be worth the ticket price to me.

今日都々さんのショーのチケットを買いに行った。高い（札幌の物価で考えたら。うちのマジックバーに4回も行ける、笑）。飲み放題（？）とビュッフェも付いているけど。ショーが多分最高に面白いと思うので、ショーだけでこの値段でも損の感じがしないと思うけど。

Making the Sapporo TV Tower disappear ・札幌のテレビ塔を消す

I was bored during the weekend and decided to try to make the Sapporo TV tower disappear. Not even one of my friends had time to help me take pictures so I had to use the timer on the camera and take all the pictures myself. So the camera angles etc. are not great.

週末の昼間は退屈になって、大通公園に行って、札幌テレビ塔を消そうかなと思った。カメラマンやってくれる友達が１人もいんかったから、タイマーとかを使って、自分全部やらないと行けないことになった。なので、写真の撮り方がうまくなかった。

This is a silly trick. I cover the TV tower with a handkerchief and it disappears! There were some people staring and wondering what on Earth the crazy foreigner was doing in the park...

ふざけたマジックなんだね。テレビ塔をハンカチで隠して、テレビ塔が消える！何人かに「あの外人何しているか！？」って、変な人だと思われた、笑。

Funny Magic Clips: Helt Magiskt episode 2

In the second episode of the Swedish TV show "Helt Magiskt" there were many performances that I liked. I liked all of Charlie Caper and Claes Malmberg's tricks. They did a very nice street magic performance with time going backwards: a glass was filled with soda from a can that was the crushed, another glass fell and broke, a paper was unfolded; the paper folded itself back up again, the glass restored and jumped up on the table, the other glass emptied itself of soda, the soda can restored itself and filled with soda again. Napkins that were used and put down came floating back up etc. Very nice combination of these tricks in an interesting story.

スウェーデンのテレビの「Helt Magiskt」という番組の２回目の番組に面白いマジックいっぱいあった。Charlie CaperさんとClaes Malmbergさんのパフォーマンスが全部好きだった。ストリートマジックでタイムマシーンのテーマのマジックが凄く良いストーリだった：缶からソーダをグラスに入れて、別のグラスを落として（割れちゃった）、ティッシュでちょっと拭いた。折りたたんだ紙を広げて、タイムマシーンだって。時間を戻す。紙が自動で折りたたんだ。割れたグラスが治って下からテーブルの上に飛んで来た。グラスからソーダが自動になくなった。つぶされた缶が復活してソーダが又入っていた。使っていたティッシュとかも、浮いてきた。色々な知っているマジックを使っていいストーリにしたんだね。

They also did an effect where they had a spectator hold her ring inside a handkerchief and tried to distract here with a chop cup routine (walnut and cup). The walnut kept going where it should not be able to go, an egg appeared, a chicken appeared, inside the egg the walnut reappered and inside the walnut was the spectators ring that had disappeared sometime.

お客さんがステージに来て、お客さんがハンカチの中に入れてある自分の指輪を持っている。カップとクルミを使って、お客さんがこのマジックに夢中になる時に指輪を消すよというセッティングでカップとクルミのマジックをし始めた。クルミが消えたり出たりした。ある時にカップの中に卵が出た。そして、ひよこも出た。卵の中からクルミが出た。クルミの中に何かのタイミングで消えたお客さんの指輪があった。

Their final performance was also very nice. They baked a cake by making ingredients appear by magic (salt from a hand, a bottle of syrup from the mouth, a raisin (my favorite, haha!), an egg) and putting them in a hat. When setting the hat on fire, a cake appeared and the sticky stuff was gone.

彼らの最後のパフォーマンスも面白かった。材料をマジックで出して（手から塩・口からシロップの瓶・手から小さなレーズン（笑）・手から玉子）、混ぜた材料をハットに入れた。火をつけたら、ハットの中からケーキが出た。

Very nice story telling with magic. Also impressive that the non-magician did so much sleight of hand (and did it quite well).

全部、ストーリが良かった。マジシャンではない人も結構いい感じの手品していたし。

Joe Labero and Hannah Graf impressed me by passing through a "hypnotized" woman. This looked very nice. The last team also had a fun trick with a balloon.

A chance meeting ･偶然の出会い

Today I was shopping for a paper box (which I have been looking for everywhere for two weeks and still not found anyone who sells...) but passed by the magic goods corner of Tokyu Hands and decided to see if they had something new. They did, but not really anything that looked interesting. While there, a magician from Kushiro (I think it was, some place on Hokkaido) also came by and said hello to me. He has come to our magic bar once when I was working, and he remembered me. I remembered him very well, because unlike most Japanese people I meet, he speaks English very well.

今日買い物をしに行った（紙箱を2週間くらい前から探しているがどこでも売っていないみたい）時に東急ハンズの手品道具売り場を通った。何か新しいものあるかな、ちょっと見に行った。新しいのがあったが面白そうなのがなかった。そこで釧路（だったと思う）からのマジシャンが来て、「Hello」と言ってくれた。前に一回僕がマジックバーでマジックをやっていた時に来てくれたんだ。僕のことまだ覚えていた。僕も彼のことを覚えていた。僕が知っている日本人と違って、英語が超うまいんだ（まぁ、うまい知り合いもいるが少ない）。

We chatted for awhile, among other things we had a long and interesting discussion on rubber band magic, which we both do quite a lot of. He also showed me a magic trick he has created himself with a big diamond, which I did not see coming at all. He was kind enough to give me one extra large rubber band, that may come in handy.

彼とちょっと喋った。2人とも輪ゴムのマジックを結構やっているから輪ゴムの話で盛り上がっていた、笑。デカイ宝石を使った自分で考えたマジックを見せてくれたし。分からなかった。大きな輪ゴムと名刺も貰った。

I love the British duo of magicians Barry and Stuart. They have a DVD (TV special?) called "Tricks from the Bible" that is very funny. They also have a YouTube channel.

イギリスのマジシャン組「Barry and Stuart」が好きだ。「Tricks from the Bible」というDVDかテレビスペシャルが超面白い。YouTubeのチャンネルもある。

Almost meeting a Canadian magician

Yesterday at around midnight, one of my magic bar colleagues suddenly called me and asked where I was. I said I was drinking with my colleagues, why? He said that a famous Canadian magician was coming to the magic bar in half an hour or so, so maybe I should also come.

It was about time to leave the bar we were drinking at anyway, so I said sure. It turned out to be raining almost unbelieable amounts outside, so I had run very quickly home but still goat completely soaked. I changed into dry clothes, found an umbrella and headed off to the magic bar. When I got there, it turned out that "since it was raining almost unbelieably hard", the Canadian magician and his party had given up on going to the magic bar... So I almost, but not quite, met a famous Canadian. I wonder who it was? No one seemed to have been told his name. The number of pro-magicians from abroad that come to Sapporo cannot be high, I think.

昨日、真夜中に突然マジックバーの同僚から電話掛かってきた。どこにいる？って。昼の仕事の同僚とすすきので飲んでいる。何で？後３０分くらいでカナダ人の有名なマジシャンがマジックバーに来るから来たら？って。

飲み放題がもう終わっていたから、そろそろ帰る時間だったから、行く！って言った。店から出たら、大雨だった。一生懸命走って帰ったのに、びしょ濡れ。家で着替えて、傘を取って、マジックバーに行った。付いたら、「あ、雨が大変過ぎて、カナダ人たちがマジックバーに行くのを諦めたって」と言われた…カナダ人のマジシャンに会えなかった。誰だったんだろ？気になる。誰も名前知らなかったみたい。札幌に来る外国人のプロマジシャンがなかなかいない。

Funny Magic Clips: Sketch Book

Last year at our university magic club Christmas show, I did a performance with a sketch book. You draw a pair of sunglasses and then you can take out a real pair of sunglasses and the picture in the sketchbook disappears. I like this magic theme. If you could do magic for real, this would be something that would actually be useful (unlike say making a card come to the top of a deck of cards over and over again).

大学の手品サークルの去年のクリスマスショーで僕がスケッチブックを使ったマジックをした。例えば、サングラスを描いて、スケッチブックから本物のサングラスを出す（サングラスの絵が消える）。このマジックのテーマが結構好きだ。本当の魔法が出来たら、こういうことが使えそうだね。カード1枚が何回もトランプの上に来るマジックと違って、笑。

In Sweden, a new TV show has just started. It is called "Helt Magiskt" ("Completely Magical") and is a Swedish version of the BBC show "The Magicians". Every week some non-magician celebrities are paired up with a magician and they do magic together. The Swedish government run TV is very nice, and they make most of their content available for free on the Internet (the page for the show is here: http://svt.se/heltmagiskt and things with SVT-play means things on the Internet).

スウェーデンで最近「Helt Magiskt」（「完全にマジック」）というテレビ番組のシリーズが始まった。イギリスのBBCでやっていた「The Magicians」という番組のスウェーデン版なんだ。毎週、マジシャンではない有名人がマジシャンとペア分けになって、一緒にマジックをする。スウェーデンの国立テレビ局が優しいので、自分で作成した番組がほぼ全部インターネットでも、誰でも観れる。「Helt Magiskt」のページがhttp://svt.se/heltmagisktにあって、「SVT-play」と書いてあればインターネットで観れるものだ。

I have met and spoken to one of the magicians in this show, Charlie Caper. He surprised me with how good his spoken Japanese is. I have seen him do a street magic show in Stockholm, and I have seen one of the other magicians, Michael Halvarson, in Tokyo when he did pick-pocketing for Cirque du Soleil (which I can also recommend, by the way).

この番組に出ているマジシャン1人、Charlie Caperさんに会って話したことがある。ビックリする程日本語が話せるんだ。ストックホルムで大道芸祭りで彼のショーも観たことがある。番組のMichael Halvarsonというマジシャンも東京のシルクドゥソレイで観た。

Anyway, one of the clips made available on YouTube shows Charlie Caper and a non-magician celebrity doing magic with a sketch book. I liked the things they decided to draw and produce.

Magic Auction ･マジック道具のオークション

4 big bags of stuff up for auction!

Since Friday last week, the university magic club has returned to evening sessions. During the summer the meetings are in the afternoon, when I have to work, so I cannot attend. Fridays are impossible for me even when the meetings are in the evening, but today I went to the club for the first time in months. And today there was an auction of old magic stuff!

先週金曜日から大学のサークル（奇術研究会）がまた夜例会になっているからやっとまた参加出来る。金曜日には普段行けないけど。今日久し振りにサークルに行って、手品道具のオークションがあった！

Since the others are all students, they apparently have no money at all. This meant that most things went for really really low prices. I bought lots of interesting stuff! So much so that it was a bit difficult to lug everything home. And still there were lots of things I wanted to buy but we ran out of time so the auction will continue "next time". Which seems to be a Friday, sadly. Maybe I can still go? I hope so.

学生達は基本的にお金ないみたいで、激安い感じだった。面白い物を沢山買って、帰りは結構大変だった。持てないくらい。まだまだ欲しいもの沢山あったが時間が遅すぎて、また今度に続くって…また今度ってことは金曜日だそうだけど。行けないのかなぁ…行けたら、また沢山買おう！笑

Today's shopping result

Today I bought: a compressible silk hat (which I already own, but it was super cheap), a vanishing beer bottle, a really weird looking color-changing-necktie (that nobody wanted so I said I would buy it for 100 yen (about 1 dollar), and which was apparently 8300 yen originally), some form of mental trick with for jumbo sized kings, some jumbo card trick with Japanese words, a sponge ball that felt weird to the touch, a huge handkerchief or small table cloth that you can "make a plate vanish" with, a dove book, a yellow box where you put in a dove and then disassemble the whole box and the dove is gone, a purse with a tiny purse to go with it (and with tiny 500 yen coins that are super cute). And all of this for only 10550 yen (105 dollars)! If you buy them new, just the purse set and the silk hat would cost that much.

My favorite buy today: a purse and a tiny purse set, with tiny 500 yen coins inside!

今日買ったものは：折りたたみ式シルクハット（持っているが激安かった）・消える瓶ビール・訳分からない柄のカラーチェンジネクタイ（誰も欲しくないもので、100円で一応買った。原価が8300円らしい）・メンタルネタの4枚のキングのジャンボカード・よく分からない「松」「竹」「梅」のカード・手触りが変なスポンジ・皿も消せるそうなデカイハンカチというかテーブルクロスというか・鳩出てくる本・鳩が消える（黄色い）箱・普通サイズとちっちゃいがま口、ちっちゃくて可愛い500円付き。全部で10550円しか出していない。普通な値段だったら、シルクハットとがま口だけでその値段だ。

Apart from the things I bought, I also wanted some gimmick coins, jumbo cards with naked women, sponge eggs, and some other stuff.

Magic bar review: Half Moon, Tokyo, Japan

Most of the times I have been to magic bars outside of Sapporo, I have been with a friend from Sapporo who also does magic as a hobby. 2011-04-18 was no exception, and we went to magic bar Half Moon, in Ginza (Tokyo, Japan). We had planned to go there in February but the magician of Half Moon got the flu so the visit was canceled. In return, this time we got to go there for free!

札幌以外のマジックバーに行く時は普段札幌のマジックマニアの友達と行く。2011年4月18日もそうだった。銀座にある「ハーフムーン」という店に行った。2月に行く予定だったが当日にハーフムーンのマジシャンがインフルエンザを引いたので、ドタキャンになった。代わりに今回招待された（無料ってこと）けど！

Half Moon is located in Ginza, close to the Sinbashi station. There are many magic bars in this area (one being "23 seconds by walking" away according to Google Maps :-) Half Moon is a little bit hard to find if you do not know what you are looking for, and even the sign indicating all the shops in the building does not have the name written there, only a stylished crescent. Tokyo is expensive, and Ginza is one of the most expensive parts of Tokyo, so the rent there is probably very very high. This means that Half Moon is not cheap, but the 8000 yen normal price includes unlimited drinks for 90 minutes and a superb magic show so in my opinion it is completely worth it.

ハーフムーンが銀座、新橋駅の近くにある。周りに他のマジックバーも沢山ある。１件がGoogleMapsによれば「歩いて２３秒」の距離だそうだ。細かいね、Google。店がそこまで分かり易くもない。ビルの下の看板とかでも名前書いてない。半月の絵だけ。

東京は高いし、銀座は東京の中でも高い方なので、家賃高そうだね。ハーフムーンの値段が８０００円で、マジックバーとして高い方だ。９０分飲み放題も付いているし、マジックショーが本当に素晴らしいなので、出しても全然良いと思うけど。

The interior was pretty dark, but quite nice. Very blue. The main area is the counter and magician Hide did his magic show standing inside the counter and the two of us and seven other guests sat at the counter and watched.

インテリアは割と暗かった。青かった。カウンターがメインで、マジシャンヒデさんがカウンターの中で全部で９人のお客さんにマジックを見せてくれた。

The magic was superb. Possibly the best magic show I have seen so far. There were magic tricks that were very impressive in themselves, like signed cards ending up in sealed water bottles, or back in a factory sealed card box, some mental magic effects, and much more. There were also tricks that are fairly standard but were shown in very nice ways, like a sponge ball trick, a levitating tissue paper, card to pocket routine, etc. The TV seen in the photo is also used in some tricks (things shown on the screen disappear from there and appear in the real world, and go back again). The most impressive things are the way the magic is combined with the music used, and the personality/character of Hide-san. It would be hard not to just sit back and enjoy the show (my normal way of watching magic) with a magician that nice, even if you hate magic or normally try really hard to figure out how things are done. The closing prediction effect is also very very nice. A very long paper that has been hanging in view the whole time turns out to contain a very very long story created by one of the spectators. Also, a pair of "shocking pink" panties made a surprise appearance. As a magician, I also thought the force used a few times was very very impressive.

マジックが凄かった！今まで観たマジックショーの中で１番良かったかもしれない。レベル高いマジックも勿論あったし（一般人から見たら、新品のペットボトルにサインカードが入った・サインカードが突然新品の状態になったトランプと箱の中に戻った・メンタルのネタとか）、結構スタンダードなマジックも色々あって、見せ方がオリジナルで凄く良かったし（スポンジボールのマジック・ティッシュが浮くマジック・カードがポケットに入るマジックとか）、バーのテレビを使ったマジックもあったし（テレビで映っているものが突然テレビから消えて本物が出てくるとか）し、色々あった。音楽に良いように合わせてマジックショーをやるのが凄く良かった。ヒデさんのキャラや人柄が一番良いかもしれない。こういうキャラのマジシャンにむかつくや見破ろうとする人がいないだろうなぁ。純粋に楽しむだけ。最後の予言のマジックも凄いね。ずっと前から置いてあった半端ないくらい長い紙にお客さんと一緒に作った長～い話が全部書いてある。本物の「ショッキングピンク」のパンツも現れたし。マジシャンから見たら、何回か使っていたフォースも凄かった。

ChatRoulette is a service where you get connected to random strangers and chat with them. Video chat is quite common. Some people are doing magic tricks to the people they get connected to and recording the reactions. It is interesting to see the different reactions of all kinds of people. The first time I heard of the Danish magician Rune Klan was in Rick Merrill's lecture DVD. Rick Merrill has a hilarious routine with a pen and a coin that he credits Rune Klan for inspiring/coming up with the basic trick. I love Rick Merrill's performance and decided to look up Rune Klan too.

Rune Klan has apparently done a DVD on coin magic quite some time ago, and recently the book "Rune's World". The book was said to contain both coin magic and stage magic mixed with stand up comedy. I am not particularly interested in coins, and wanted mainly the funny stuff, so I bought the book. And it is hysterically funny. A great buy.

The book has two parts. The first part contains close up magic with coins, a pen, and cards. Some of the stuff is quite challenging (difficult). Some of the stuff is really funny, like the "hitting a pen on your knee turns it into a coin" and the hiding a coin in the middle of your face, under your lower lip parts. Everything is explained in detail, with drawings and text. There are "moves" explained that can be used for many different things, and there are full routines using for example three coins to do a series of tricks with an overall story that makes sense. I liked this part of the book, especially the "funny" tricks.

The second part concerns stage magic and gags. It is done in the form of a comic book, with series of pictures showing Rune Klan doing some magic trick on stage. The explanations are mainly a cartoon Rune Klan with speech balloons where he tells you his thoughts on the trick and some details on how it is done. Many things are explained only very loosely ("I hide [something] by holding it behind [something else] from the start, then do ... , and then I pull out [first thing]"). Most people with basic knowledge of magic will know some method to accomplish the details left out or can figure it out without much work. The focus is not on teaching difficult moves or sleights, it is on showing interesting presentation ideas.

Some parts are magical routines (like the stage version of cups & balls with soccer balls and waste baskets, or the signed piece of sliced ham that ended up in bread insta-baked in a shoe despite being returned to the stack of ham), some are general presentation ideas ("I will do this trick to music." Puts on headphones and does trick to music no one else can hear"), some are quick gags (a disappearing pizza comes to mind). I loved this part of the book.

According to the background information in the book Rune Klan is mainly known for coin techniques by magicians but known for stand-up comedy using magic (with comedy being main) among "normal" people in Denmark. The book contains both, and I liked the comedy parts best.

The book says you should be over 18 to read it. It contains tricks with pictures of mostly naked women, disappearing tampons, sex dolls, etc. so I guess that is why. The contents of the book are not that risque though, so in Sweden I would not expect anyone to worry about young people getting their hands on this material.

I bought the book from Vahishing Inc and paid 60 dollars for it. This is a fair price I think. The book quality is not the best I have seen (the printing etc. is fine, but the binding feels cheap), but it is good enough. There is also a DVD included, showing Rune Klan performing some of the tricks in the book.

初めてデンマーク人のRune Klanさんのことを聞いたのがRick MerrillさんのレクチャーDVDだった。Rick Merrillさんがペンとコインで凄く面白いルーティンをやって、もともとのアイデアはRune Klanさんのアイデアだと言っている。Rick Merrillさんのそのルーティンが大好きなので、Rune Klanさんのことも調べてみた。

だいぶ前にコインのDVDを出したみたい。最近「Rune's World」という本も出した。本にコインマジックもお笑いと混ぜたステージマジックも入っていると書いてあった。僕がコインにそこまで興味ないし、ふざけてて面白いマジックが好きだし、本を買った。超面白い。買って良かった。

本の前半と後半がだいぶ違う。前半はコイン・ペン・カード、色々なクローズアップマジックの説明がある。結構難しいことも入っている。面白いアイデアもある。ペンで膝を叩くとペンがコインになるとか、顔の真ん中に、唇の下に、コインを隠すとか。テキストもイラストもあって、細かい説明がある。色々なことに使えるムーブも、フルルーティンになる説明もある。本の前半が結構好きだ。特にギャグ的なところ。

後半はステージマジックとお笑い的なギャグネタになる。テキストではなく、漫画になっている。Rune Klanさんの漫画キャラクターが色々なマジックやギャグをしている。説明は横にあるキャラクターの言うことだけ、割と大雑把な感じだ。例えば：「最初から○○を××の後ろで持っている…何かして…そして、○○を出す」。マジックの基本の知識があれば、その説明でもやろうとすれば多分出来ると思うから、いいんだけど。テクニックとかではなく、教えたいことは面白い見せ方のアイデアなんだ。

あるところはマジックのルーティンにもなる。ステージ版のサッカーボールとゴミ箱を使ったカップ＆ボールやサインされたスライスハムが一瞬で靴の中で焼かれたパンの中に入るマジック。他にも見せ方のアイデア（「次は音楽に合わせてやるマジックになる」と言って、イヤホーンを付けて、自分しか聞こえない音楽に合わせてマジックをやる）や一発ギャグみたいなこと（消えるピザ）もある。

本の後半が大好きだ。

本のイントロダクションによれば、Rune Klanさんがマジック世界でコインの難しいマジックで有名なんだがデンマークの一般人から見たら、お笑いの人でちょっとマジックも使っているイメージだそうだ。本にコインマジックもお笑い系マジックも入っている。僕はコメディのところが一番好きだ。

本の裏に18歳以上しか読めないって書いてある。確かに裸のお姉さんの写真のマジック・消えるタンポンのマジック・ダッチワイフのマジック、入っているがそこまで酷いことが入っていないからスウェーデンだったら、若い人でも大丈夫だと思う。

僕が「Vahishing Inc」から本を買った。60ドルでいい値段だと思う。本の質がまあまあだ。イラストとかが良いんだが背表紙のところとかがちょっと安物っぽい。DVDも付いている。Rune Klanさんが本に入っているマジックを見せている映像。

Funny Magic Clips: mechanical dove

Swedish magician Håkan Berg does magic with a mechanical dove on the "Talang 2011" TV show ("America's got talent", the Swedish version). Everyone is speaking Swedish, so for non-Swedes it may be hard to understand what is going on. Basically, the magician is being very confident before the tricks ("Very few people in the world can do this with a deck of cards!") and frustrated afterwards ("Dammit, it's a different color than the one that disappeared..."). The jury members are mainly laughing and saying "That dove is still flapping its wings." and "I can't stop laughing about that stupid dove!".

While actually being a very skilled magician, in the performance he manages to look really funny and natural doing everything (except the last production) wrong in the way a beginner with too much confidence would do things wrong. Very funny. I also love it when the water disappears from the cup and shoots out of his mouth.

スウェーデンのマジシャンのHåkan Berさんが「Talang 2011」というスウェーデンのテレビ番組（America's Got Talent（アメリカズ・ゴット・タレント）のスウェーデン版）でふざけてて面白いパフォーマンスをした。スウェーデン語で喋っているから、分かりづらいかもしれない。基本的にやる前にマジシャンが自信を持って「世界でこれが出来る人は俺以外あまりいないんだよね」とか言ったりして、やってからは困ってて、「うわ～、消えたやつと違う色だし…」とか独り言言ったりする。審査員が笑いながら「あの鳩がまだばたばたしているね！」とか、「あの鳩が超うけるんだけど」とか言っている。

実はマジックが上手なのに、このパフォーマンスで面白くて、自然に自信のありすぎな初心者マジシャンと同じように全部（最後のプロダクション以外）失敗する。うける。カップから水が消えて、また口から飛び出る時も大好き。

Magic bar review: Magic Bar Issey, Tokyo, Japan

Magic Bar Issey

I went to Magic Bar Issey on 2011-02-21 with a friend who also does magic as a hobby. Magic Bar Issey is located in Roppongi in Tokyo, Japan. They have a web page: http://www.magicbarissey.com The bar is quite conveniently located, close to the subway station. The price was reasonable, 6000 yen per person for 2 hours of unlimited drinking, or a 4500 yen table charge and a requirement to order something (which ends up being more or less 6000 yen too). Compared to Sapporo where I live, 6000 yen is expensive, but in Tokyo everything is expensive (compared to here) so it was not bad. Most magic bars I have been to in Tokyo cost about 6000 yen.

2011年2月21日に六本木にある「マジックバーIssey」に趣味でマジックをやっている友達と2人で行った。店のウェブページ： http://www.magicbarissey.com 地下鉄駅のすぐ近くにあって、行きやすい。6000円で2時間飲み放題で割とリーズナブルだった。ショットで行けば、4500円チャージもあるから、大した変わらない。僕が住んでいる札幌と比べたら6000円が高いが東京の物価が基本的にが札幌より高いから東京のマジックバーはだいたいそういう感じだ。

Garlic toast

When I was there, we first got to see a stage magic show, which was very nice. Magicians Shun and Seiju did all manner of tricks. They produced doves and other, larger, birds. They stuffed huge amounts of burning cigarettes in their mouths, they did illusions, produced a bowling ball from a sketch pad, dropped the head down to chest level, etc. etc. The tempo of the stage show was high, and it was very enjoyable. We sat at the table closest to the stage, so quite a few times you could actually see things that you were not supposed to see (thin wires, things almost but not quite hidden behind hands, etc.) though.

最初にステージマジックショーがあった。ステージマジックを見せるマジックバーが少ないので、良かった。「Shun」と「Seiju」というマジシャンが色々見せてくれた。鳩やもっと大きな取りが出た。燃えているタバコが食われた。イリュージョンもあった。ボーリングボールがスケッチブックから出てきた。Seijuの頭が落ちた。ステージショーのテンポが良くて面白いマジックだった。うちらのテーブルがステージの一番近いテーブルだったので、たまに見えちゃ行けないものが見えていたけど。細い糸や手で隠しきれないものとか。

After the stage show, Shun came to our table and did close up magic for us too. This too was good. A signed 1000 yen bill ended up inside a kiwi, a deformed and empty can of Coca Cola returned to its original shape and filled up with coke, a fork ended up being bent, and more. Later, Seiju did close up magic for a group of 6 people sitting at the table next to us, so we watched that too. Coins disappeared from the hand of one spectator and ended up under the watch of another, cards came to the top of the deck, which turned into a hamburger bento, and the signed card ended up inside an unopened bottle of tea etc. This group was there celebrating the birthday of one of the girls, so the staff came over with an empty metal pan that they poured lighter fluid in and set on fire. When closing the pan with a lid the fire went out and a big birthday cake appeared, which was funny.

ステージショーの後はShunさんがうちのテーブルに来てクローズアップマジックも見せてくれた。それも良かった。サインした1000円札がキウイの中から出て来た。つぶされた（空の）コーラの缶が復活して、コーラが出てきた。フォーク曲げ。色々あった。隣のテーブルの団体にSeijuさんがテーブルマジックを見せたから、それも横から観た。お客さんの手からコインが消えて、別のお客さんの腕時計の下に行った。サインしたカードがトランプの真ん中から上がって来て、トランプの把がハンバーグ弁当になって、サインカードが新品のペットボトルの中に入った。団体の誰かの誕生日だったので、マジシャンが大きなプレートに火をつけて、ふたで火を消したら、何もなかったのに突然デカイ誕生日ケーキが出た。面白かった。

The bar is quite small, but the interior is very nice. The staff were very nice. Seiju later came over and talked to us and when my friend said he had bought Seiju's DVD on coin magic we also got a lot of pointers on stuff that is not on the DVD either because it was forgotten at the time or that Seiju discovered later.

店は割と狭いがインテリアが綺麗だ。スタッフがめっちゃ優しい、笑。最後にSeijuさんがうちのテーブルにも来て、ちょっと話してくれた。友達がSeijuさんのコインマジックのDVDを買ったと言ったら、色々なDVDに載っていないことも教えて貰った。

Funny Magic Clips: handkerchief magic

Here are two versions of the classic trick of taking a small handkerchief, placing it in your hand and making it disappear and reappear.

ハンカチを手に入れて、消したり出したりする昔からあるマジックの面白い見せ方の動画2本だ。

One of the most original versions I have ever seen is Ursula Martinez "Hanky Panky"... There are videos of it on the Net, but not on Youtube (well, the first half can be found on Youtube too). Youtube does not allow nudity. Here is one version: Ursula Martinez, Hanky Panky The dancing is just so... raw? bizarre? funny? The hand/finger movements are also very funny. The whole "it appeared from this piece of clothing this time, so I will remove this piece of clothing" storyline is a great idea. And the final production is weird/funny.

今まで観た一番衝撃的な見せ方はUrsula Martinezさんのパフォーマンスだ。ネットに動画があるが全裸はユーチューブで駄目なので、ユーチューブには前半しかない。全部観れるところは例えばここ：Ursula Martinez, Hanky Panky 音楽に合わせて踊ったりするのが…酷すぎ？やわい？面白い！指の動きの超うける。「ここから出たからこの服脱ぐね」というストーリーも良い考えだ。最後のオチもおかしいというか面白いというか。

A similar presentation is used by Brynolf & Ljung (who are also from Sweden, like me). This clip is from the "Talang 2009" TV show ("America's got talent", the Swedish version). One guy makes a handkercief vanish and the other says: "I know what you in the audience think! He is hiding it in [next piece of clothing]!" I especially like the part with what to do with the microphone.

My first magic show, caught with my pants down

To get the blog started, here is a short anecdote from my first ever magic show. I was asked to to a 5 to 10 minutes show at a New Year party in a dorm where I lived for 6 months when I first came to Sapporo. At the time of this show, I no longer lived there but I still had quite a few friends that did. One of them was organizing the New Year party for the 30 or so students that were not going home for New Years.

Since I had not been doing magic for very long (about 1 year as a hobby, not yet a very intensive hobby) I did not have much to choose from when it came to interesting tricks to show in front of 30 to 40 people. I did a few tricks and most went over fairly well. I came up with an idea for a trick myself that I had not seen anyone do but is not very difficult, and this was quite popular.

The trick is this: a spectator comes up to help me and selects a card. He (in this case) showed it around to everyone except me, and then put it back in the middle of the deck (very fairly in the middle). Since this is Japan, the idea was to use "karate magic" to find the card. In practice, this meant that the spectator had to karate chop the deck of cards, and with some luck the selected card would come to the bottom of the deck when doing this. He chopped, but it was still the wrong card. I said that maybe he had to hit it harder, and that I would brace the deck on my leg (no table available) to help. He hit it again. The bottom card had not changed, but... since he now hit very hard, maybe it was too hard. If he felt my trousers, did he feel something strange? Yes, it felt like something that could be a card was stuck inside my trousers. So, he was too strong so the card had gone not only to the bottom of the deck but through my trousers!

So I said, "OK, I guess I will just have to take my pants off then." and most people laughed and thought it was a joke. When I started unbuttoning my belt, they seemed to realize that "this foreigner is crazy, he is actually doing it", and suddenly there were about 25 digital cameras pointed at me, recording movies. I took off my trousers and the spectator could take out the card that was indeed stuck there. It was his selected card.

The method is obvious to anyone with basic card skills, but I like the presentation. I did the same trick with jumbo cards two months later at the house festival of the same dorm. There were about 100 people watching I think. Then I got a very serious 60 year old woman as my assistant and she seemed flustered when I started taking off my trousers. She laughed when she took out the card and found that it was her selection, though. I was later yelled at by the dorm administration that explained that in Japan you do not take off your pants in front of strangers. Especially children. Though the children of course laughed most of all :-) I have since performed this trick in bars and at children's parties too, and it seems to be quite popular. And it is a good excuse to wear funny underwear too :-)

ブログの最初のマジック物語として、私の最初の最初のマジックショーの話。札幌に初めて来た時に住んでいた寮の忘年会で5～10分のマジックショーをしてくれないかって聞かれた。もう住んでいなかったが友達何人かがまだ住んでいた。その1人がお正月に実家に帰らない学生のための忘年会の担当者だった。

当時、まだマジックを練習し始めたばかりだった（1年くらいで、ただの趣味でやっていて、そこまではまっていなかった）。30～40人に見せれるネタがそんなになかった。色々やってみて、まあまあうけた。自分で考えたマジック１つも入れた。難しくはないがうけが良かった。

こういうマジックだった：観客1人に手伝って貰った。トランプ1枚選んで、皆に見せた。トランプの真ん中に入れた。日本なので、日本風空手マジックでカードを当てると言って、お客さんがトランプに空手チョップして、選んだカードが一番下に来るマジック。トランプを叩いて貰ったが一番下のカードは選んだカードではなかった。もうちょっと強く叩けば、何かなるかもしれない。私が足でトランプを支えるし（テーブルがなかった）。もっと強く叩いて貰った。一番下のカードがまだ違っていたが…もしかしたら今強すぎて、トランプが一番下ではなく、ズボンに入ったかもしれない！ズボン触って貰って、確かにトランプが入っている感じがしたそうだ。トランプ行き過ぎたってことだよね。

じゃぁ、脱ぐねって言ったが皆ちょっと笑ってて冗談で言っていると思ったみたい。ベルトを脱ぐと、この画人が頭おかしいから本当に脱ぐか！って思われて、突然ディジカメ25台くらい現れて、皆動画を撮り始めたけど、笑。ズボンを脱いで、観客にズボンの中にあったトランプを取って貰った。確かに、選んだカードだった。

トランプのマジックをちょっとでも知っていれば、やり方はすぐ分かると思うが見せ方がまだ個人的に結構好きなんだ。2ヵ月後、またその寮で、「会館祭り」というイベントでマジックショーをした。100人くらい来ていたかな？また同じマジックを、ジャンボカードでして、今回60歳くらいのおばさんに手伝って貰った。ズボンを脱ごうとした時におばさんが困っている顔したがカードを取って、本当に自分のカードだと分かった時に笑ってくれた。寮の管理人に後で叱られた。「日本では知らない人の前でズボン脱がないよ！特に子供の前！」って。子供が勿論一番笑っていたけどね、笑。その後も何回か子供のイベントやバーのショーでこのマジック披露したことがある。うけが結構いい。面白い下着を履く言い訳にもなるし、笑。
