Magic Mania Meeting at Magic Bar Red King ・ マジックマニア会＠マジックバーレッドキング

My magician friend Shogo has got a new job in the magic bar "Red King" in Sapporo and the thought we should start having "magic mania meetings" again. Yesterday we had the first magic mania meeting in Red King with 6 participants.

マジシャン友達の丞吾が新しい仕事出来て、今「Red King」というマジックバーで働いている。前によくマニア会をやっていたが最近やっていないから、またやろうよっていう話をしていた。昨日、レッドキングでの初めてのマニア会があった。6人もいた。

Shogo himself has mastered a very nice bottom deal, but did not want me to upload a clip of him doing his bottom deal because he thinks it still needs more work. Instead, we did some gag type of tricks, and some flourish type things.

丞吾が最近ボトムディールを練習して、かなり上手にできている。動画を撮ったがまだまだ練習が必要だから載せちゃ行けないと本人に言われた…その代わりにギャグネタやフラリッシュの動画を撮ったから載せる。

Here is a coin magic trick which is of the slightly "mania" type (i.e. difficult).

I like gag style magic, as do some of my friends. This is a friend who does some seriously difficult magic too, but this trick is just for fun.
僕はギャグネタが大好きなんだ。そういう友達もいる。この動画では難しいというより面白いことをやっている友達だが他に大変難しいマジックもする人だ。

This is me showing off a business card trick. One of our customers asked if it was possible to do a famous card trick called "Size Surprise" (I think) with business cards instead. I made up a set of business cards the next day, and the result was so-so. You can actually hand out any size of business card after you are done too (the original trick has a card of a certain size that you cannot really let people touch). It is a silly gag trick, which is just the type of magic I like most.

最後の動画は僕だ。名刺を使ったギャグネタのマジック。夏にマジックバーツイスターのお客さんに有名なカードマジック（「ビッグサプライズ」というかな？）、名刺で出来るかって聞かれた。次の日に名刺で作ってみた。まあまあだった。でも、何の大きさの名刺でも渡せるからちょっと面白いと思った（元のマジックではある大きさのカードは渡せない）。ばかばかしいマジックの好きな僕にちょうどいいマジックだ。

Recording a few new magic tricks ・ 新ネタの動画

Recently we have not had any "magic mania" meetings. I have been busy at work (and sick) so I have not practiced much new stuff. The most "mania" of the staff in our magic bar quit a few months ago and now works in a "normal" bar, so we do not meet as much anymore. My most "mania" friend found himself a girlfriend, so now we see each other only once every two months or so. So everyone coming together at the same time for magic mania meetings do not happen very much anymore.

最近、マジックのマニア会が全然ない。僕は仕事で忙しい（風邪とかも何回も引いたし）。一番マニアの同僚がやめて、普通のバーで働いているからそんなに会わない。一番マニアの友達が彼女できたから最近2ヶ月に１回くらい程度でしか会わない。マニア会の他の人も、皆で同じ日に集まることがなかなかない。

People sometimes tell me they liked our magic clips on YouTube and want me to upload new stuff. These complaints have increased lately, so I went over to one of our magic bars at a time when they did not have anything to do, and asked a friend to record me doing some new silly tricks that I recently have become fond of. These are not of the "mania" type, but more of a "joke" type. Still, I felt I should upload something, so here they are.

たまに、「ユーチューブにある動画を観たよ」とかと言われる。もっとアップして欲しいって。最近そういう文句が多い、ｗ。うちのマジックバーの暇そうな時に行って、マジシャン同僚に動画を撮って貰った。ギャグネタばかりだ。マニア会とだいぶ違うが何かアップしなきゃと思ってきたから、個人的にギャグネタが好きな僕の感じのマジック動画になった。

The first clip here is a trick I practiced quite a long time ago and like very much. I have not been performing it very much (not at all, more or less), though. Recently I have started performing it in our magic bar. After we relocated, we now have a very low counter, so people can actually see my legs. I like the trick, but it is very short, so I usually play it off as a joke about optical illusions, and how a trick of your eyes makes the pen look rubbery and in a less known trick of your eyes also makes the pen look like a coin.

最初は昔練習して、僕の好きなマジックだ。好きなマジックだが、見せることが今までほとんどなかった。最近マジックバーでちょっとやることになっているけど。うちのマジックバーが移転してから、カウンターが低いから足とかも見える。短いマジックなので、だいたい「目の錯覚、色々あるよね。こうしたら、ペンが曲がっている様に見える。こうしたら、コインに見える。色々な錯覚あるよね」みたいな話をして、ギャグみたいに見せる。

The next clip is my version of spoon bending. When I showed it to the "mama" at the "magic snack bar" Ropossa, who is very very good at "normal" spoon bending (she has bent tens of thousands of spoons), she thought it was very funny. She even gave me some spoons to play with. It is a very very quick trick. I tried to go for a heart shape of the bent spoon, but that turned out to be more difficult than I had imagined, so in the end I gave up and the spoon is not really that heart shaped.

次は僕のスプーン曲げだ。マジックのスナック「ロポッサ」のママはスプーン曲げがうまい。数万本も曲げてきた。ママに僕のやり方のスプーン曲げを見せた時、かなりうけた、ｗ。ママはギャグネタも好きみたい。その後、スプーン何本かもくれた。僕はハート形にしたかったが思ったより大変だったから、諦めて、そこまでハートの形になっていない。

Another optical illusion type of magic trick is showing a pen (or cigarette, or anything, really, but pens and cigarettes are the most common) and covering it with your hand so it looks shorter. Using this as a setup, I made a joke trick where a pen (and a spoon) "looks smaller". I think it is pretty funny, but I have not really used it other than as a joke for other magicians.

また目の錯覚のマジックの動画だ。有名な錯覚で、ペンやタバコ（他のものでも出来るがペンやタバコが多い）を手で隠して、小さく見える錯覚がある。その錯覚を見せてから、ペンもスプーンも結構小さく見える錯覚のマジックをやる。個人的にこういうのが好きだが他のマジシャンにギャグみたいにしか見せたことがない。

Finally, the "mama" of Ropossa also gave me a magic prop that makes a pen shrink. The normal (intended) way of using it is completely different. If I understand correctly you use a handkerchief and make a pen small. I use the prop to illustrate the same optical illusion as above, where a pen looks shorter. Then I explain that I actually used a trick pen, and how you can make it long again. I only got the pen, no instructions and no handkerchief (and possibly there was one more tool included that I also did not get).

最後の動画は、ロポッサのママがくれたマジック道具を使ったマジックだ。またペンが小さく見える。普通の使い方はハンカチを使って割りと真面目にペンを小さくするマジックだそうだが僕はペンしか貰っていない。ハンカチ・解説書・何か付いていた道具、見たこともない。僕は前の動画と同じ目の錯覚の話をして、小さく見える錯覚だよって言う。そして、実は仕掛けのあるペンなんだと説明して、こうしたらペンが伸びて元に戻るんだよねってあまり納得行かない説明をする。

Magic Maniac Competition ・ マジックマニアの勝負

Yesterday we once again had one of our pretty much weekly "magic maniac" meetings. The regular members consisting of me (computer science researcher), U (barber), and O (udon chef) were of course there. Since we were in the magic bar I go to during the weekends, two of the magicians there were also available, though one left early. There was also a farmer who I have met once or twice before who does mental magic.

昨日、またマジックマニア会の日だった。レギュラーの僕・う～さん・オさんが参加した、マジックバーのスタッフ2人もいたし、農家をやっているメンタリストも参加したし、楽しかった。

At around 1 a.m. all regular customers had left, except one young girl. She has been in our magic bar several times before, and I guess she likes magic quite a lot. We were having the maniac meeting, but since she was all alone we invited her to our table. Normally, we do some kind of game were you have 10 seconds to make a coin disappear, and then the others guess were it is. The person who fools the least number of people has do perform some high level magic trick for the others.

午前1時頃に、一般人のお客さんが1人以外皆帰ったので、本格的なマニア会が始まった。その一般人の女の子1人がちょっと寂しく見えたので、うちらのテーブルに誘った。それで、付いて行けない話とかもあったんだろが色々な面白いマジックもあった。店長がちょっと早めに帰らないといけない予定があったからその後マジシャン5人になった。普段罰ゲームみたいに、10秒でコインを消して、一番あてられる人が他の人にマジックを見せないと行けないゲームとかする。

This time, we decided to instead do competition rounds were everyone did one magic trick for the girl (and the other magicians), and she then decided which performance she liked the best. I had brought some new things aimed at maniacs, and had left all my "works really well on young women" stuff at home... And I had already done most of my normal repertoire for her the two times she had seen me perform in the magic bar before.

今回、勝負にしようって話になった。皆が1人づつその女の子にマジックを見せて、女の子がどのパフォーマンスが一番良かったかを決めることになった。僕がマニア会にマニア向けのネタしか持って行けなかったし、前にもマジックバーでその女の子が僕のパフォーマンスを2回見たし、見せていないネタがそんなになかった。

The competitors were me, my young magic bar colleague (our boss had to leave before the competition got going, though he was part of the normal maniac stuff we did first), U, O, and the farmer.

他に、僕のマジックバーの若い同僚1人・床屋さんの友達・うどん屋のマニア友達・農家のメンタリストも参加した。

The first round had lots of different types of magic. This was true for all the first three rounds. For example, the farmer did various mind reading/prediction effects; U did his one coin routine, a ring and rope routine ending with a huge (fake) diamond appearing on the ring on the spectators finger, a card trick were all cards were white but then turned into normal cards except one card from which a hamburger appeared; my colleague did a card effect with a strange lens, a "do as I do" thing with a sea lion, a "cut off finger in a box" thing, etc.; I did a card effect were all cards except the chosen one turned into the 9 of hearts, switched out a 0 yen fake bill for a 1000 yen bill that the girl had brought herself that she held in her hand, and something else; O did a card trick were lots of udon appeared, made Frisk breathmints turn big in several ways, and much more.

最初の１ラウンドに幅広くて、色々なマジックがあった。他のラウンドもそうだった。例えば、農家で予言や心理を読むマジックをした。う～さんがワン・コインも、指輪と紐（最後に女の子の指にあった指輪にでかい宝石が出てきた！）、白いトランプが普通のトランプに変わってトランプからハンバーガーが出てきた。同僚が変なレンズを使ったカード当て・アシカの可愛い絵を使ったマジックなどをした。オさんがトランプからうどん・フリスクが色々な意味で大きくなったとか、色々なカードマジックもした。僕が選んだカード以外全部ハートの9にしたし、お客さんの1000円札と僕の0円札っぽい名刺をお客さんの手の中で入れ替えたし。

The first round was won by a mental effect by the farmer. The second round I won, with my new 0 yen/1000 yen changing places in the spectator's hand trick. The third round was won by O with his udon produced from a deck of card trick.

最初のラウンドは農家のメンタルマジックの優勝になった。2回目は僕の手の中の変わる札のマジックになった。3回目はオさんのうどんのマジックが一番うけた。

For the fourth round, people were running out of new material. O suggested the girl could make a request, and then everyone had to do that trick in their own way. She said she wanted to see something disappear. This was a very fun challenge. The mentalist went first and had her write something down that she dislikes. He then divined what she disliked without looking, and told her that he had psychically made those bad things disappear. My colleague and O both made a whole deck of cards disappear. U made some coins disappear. I first made a rubber band disappear, but that did not go over well, so I took out a handkerchief and made a lighter, a box of cigarettes, and a 2 liter bottle of tea disappear. The tea won some appreciation by it being really big, but the other magicians disputed that that should mean I won, haha. I claimed victory by way of having the sense to pick the best trick to impress with, even if the actual disappearing may or may not have happened elsewhere.

4回目になった時に、結構ネタ切れって感じだったからオさんが「女の子からリクエストを聞いて、皆同じマジックをすれば？」と提案した。「何かが消えるマジック見たい」って。こういうチャレンジが超楽しかった！順番で、メンタルシトが紙に嫌なものを書いてもらって、見ないで何の嫌なことだったかをあてて、嫌なものが消えるマジックをした。同僚もオさんもトランプ1個丸ごと消した。う～さんが何を消したか、ちょっと不明だったがコインとか消えたと思う。僕が最初にうけ狙いで輪ゴムを消したがかなり滑った…皆が僕のすべりに爆笑（笑）。その後ハンカチを出して、ライタ・タバコの箱・2リトルのペットボトルを消した。2リトルのボトルがでかいから印象が一番強かったみたい。それで、ヨーナスの優勝になるか、不明だと他のマジシャンが言い出した（笑）。ネタを選ぶセンスが良かったから僕の優勝だと僕が答えたけど。僕が本当に自分で消したかもしかしたら誰か他の人が消したか、関係ないね！笑

The girl was probably very happy with having several hours of private magic show. I left at around 6:20 a.m. (I have to work during the days) but some people were still left then (more customers showed up around 4 a.m. too).

その女の子が普段のマジックのパフォーマンスを見てから、何時間もプライベートのマジックショー観れたのが多分ラッキーだったと思うね。僕が6時20分に帰った（昼の仕事しているから…）。何人かがまだやっていたけど。4時ごろに他のお客さんも入ったし。

Magic Mania Movie ・ 久し振りのマニア会動画

Today I went to one of our magic bars to talk about The Walking Dead (which just finished its second season here in Japan yesterday) with one of my colleagues there. There were lots of magic maniacs there, though, so we did not have much chance to talk about TV shows. Instead, I managed to get a nice clip showing one of my friends doing a funny routine with flies.

今日、「ウォーキングデッド」というドラマのどシーズン２がちょうど今日本で終わったので、うちのマジックバーの1号店に同僚とドラマの話をしに行った。マジックのマニアの人がもういっぱい入っていたから、結局ドラマの話できなかったが楽しかった。マニア友達のハエ叩きのパドルの演技の動画も撮れた。

New magic maniac ・ 新しいマジックマニア

Today I ran into a guy I know since about a year ago who also does magic. I forced him to do a trick for the camera, and put it up on YouTube.

He is a big fan of Akira Fujii, just liek one of my other maniac friends. He was even dressed like Fujii-san today! (Hat, shirt, vest :-) He showed me the Sidewinder move from Fujii-san's DVD.

今日マジックバーでもう１人のマニアに会った。１年前から何回も会っているが今日カメラに何か見せてって、強制してみた。

藤井あきらさんが好きで、今日服も藤井さんっぽかった！帽子・シャツ・ウェスト。藤井さんのサイドワインダーＤＶＤからの技法を見せて貰った。

More Mania Movie Clips ・ マジックマニアの動画を又アップした

My friend felt lonely when we did not have a magic mania meeting, and he wanted to make some movie clips despite no one else being there. I uploaded three clips, his card control (palm shift), his cover pass, and his linking cigarettes. Something that is quite funny is that every time we record some movies with him, he is wearing the exact same shirt. He claims it is just a coincidence, but I am starting to believe he has only one shirt :-)

友達がマニアック会をやっていない時に寂しかったそうで、他の人がいなかったのに動画撮りたかった。動画３つアップした。友達のカードコントロール（パームシフト）、カバーパス、リンキングシガレット。最近不思議だと思ってきたのは、友達のマジックの動画の時に、友達が毎回同じシャツを着てい…彼によれば、偶然だそうだが僕が思っているのは、彼がもしかしたらシャツ一枚しか持っていないかも（笑）。

Magic Mania Gathering Again, in Trick Bar Twister ・ 又トリックバーツイスターでマジックのマニアック会

Today was Valentine's Day which is a big thing in Japan, but since none of has had anything better to do, we once again ended up having a magic mania gathering in the magic bar "Trick Bar Twister" in Sapporo. There is a report from the first magic maniac gathering available too.

今日、バレンタインだったが誰も何のやることもなかったみたいで、また札幌にあるマジックバー「トリックバーツイスター」でマジックのマニアック会を行った。第１回のマニアック会のリポートもある。

Magic Mania Gathering in Trick Bar Twister ・ トリックバーツイスターでマジックのマニアック会

Yesterday evening I went to the magic bar "Trick Bar Twister" here in Sapporo to talk to a friend who works there. I also ran into another friend who often goes there.

昨日、札幌（すすきの）にあるマジックバー「トリックバーツイスター」に行った。友達がそこで働いているんだ。たまたま別の友達も店に来ていた。

We now have the Sapporo Snow Festival and the Susukino Ice Festival here in Sapporo, bringing huge amounts of tourists (Wikipedia says it is about 2 million tourists that come here for these events). We thought maybe this would mean that the magic bar would be busy, but no. In fact, there were only two other guests the whole night.

札幌雪祭りもすすきの氷の祭もちょうど今始まったので、観光客がいっぱい来ている。Wikipediaによれば、毎年200万人くらい来るそうだ。だから、マジックバーも混んでいるかなと思ったが激暇だった。私たち以外2人しか来なかった。

This was a good chance for us to have a "magic maniac" face-off. We recorded movies of different magic moves that the other people wanted to see. And I uploaded 11 of those movies to YouTube. So here is a short description of each of them:

First out, we have the "Ussel Pass". It is similar to the muscle pass with coins, though a slightly different part of the hand is used. My friend says he wanted to learn the muscle pass but did not know how it was done, so he just guessed and ended up learning something slightly different...

One friend is a huge fan of Akira Fujii. He is also fond of learning difficult moves, so he can do quite a lot of what Fujii-san does. His moves also look quite similar to Fujii-san's moves. Here are some of the things (Akira Fujii based and others) we recorded.

友達1人が藤井アキラの大ファンなんだ。難しい技法も好きで、藤井さんの技法も結構練習してて、出来ることが多い。やり方も結構藤井さんっぽい。色々なトランプの技法を撮った。

My friend is very good at the Diagonal Palm Shift (Fujii-san style). I am not (I have never practiced it). My friend did it very well for the camera. I then did a parody version of it, and did not even do the parody very well...

友達はダイアゴナル・パーム・シフト（藤井さんのやり方の）が上手だ。僕は下手だというか、練習したこともない。友達がカメラに綺麗に見せた。僕がその後ふざけたようにそれをばかにしようとした。ばかにすることも結構下手な感じになったけど、笑。

My friends thought that I should do something for the camera too, so I ended up doing two card moves with someone else's deck (I am not used to Bicycle cards, but can do most of my moves with any deck I guess).

友達に「ヨーナスも何かしなきゃ！」って言い張っていたので、結局借りたトランプでカードマジックの動画撮られた。Bicycleを普段使わないので、慣れていない。でも、何のカードでも何となく大丈夫だ。

今回、これで終了だが多分また似たようなのをやる。動画観て「痩せないとやばいね」 って気付いた…
