Originally from Sweden, I now live in Sapporo (Japan). My name is Jonas, and my last name which seems to be unpronounceable to both Japanese speakers and English speakers, means Lake-Mountain. Jonas means "Dove". I do magic in the Magic Bar Twister in Sapporo during the weekends, and this is my blog about magic things.

Slit mouthed woman doing some magic in Ropossa
On my way back after doing a magic show as the "kuchi sake onna" ("slit mouthed woman" urban legend monster), I stopped by Ropossa. The mama of Ropossa had requested that I stop by when in this costume. I ended up doing some table magic for some other guests there. It was a lot of fun.

Magic show at the El Mango Halloween Party
The first of November, there was another Halloween party and did another magic show. Again dressed as the "kuchi sake onna" ("slit mouthed woman" urban legend monster). The party came with lots of good food, and many different performances. Apart from my magic, there was Latin dancing, Kung-Fu stunt action fighting, singing by imitating famous people, hip-hop dancing, and salsa dancing.
For a Halloween party, the number of people with funny costumes was quite low. There was a costume competition, and I voted for a Marilyn Monroe girl. In the end, I won the costume competition and got a massage cushion.
When I was preparing for my performance, one of the dancers from a previous performance came into the only back stage room. She took a look at me and asked: "You are not really a woman right?" and then asked me to leave the room. She wanted to change out of her performance costume and into her Halloween costume. I wanted to prepare for my performance, since I was the next person to go on stage, but I figured I was pretty much done and gave her the room.
She also noticed that not only am I not a woman, I am also not Japanese. She asked where I am from, and when I said that I am from Sweden she started speaking Swedish to me. When we spoke more later, she said that she went to a Swedish high school for one year. She speaks quite well, but with a very strong southern Sweden dialect. That she speaks with a much better southern Swedish accent than I could possibly manage (despite me being quite good a Swedish in general :-) is pretty funny when she looks very non-Swedish.
She also turned out to work at the same university that I work at. We now have lunch together once per week (except when I am travelling, which recently is like all the time).
Two people who can speak Swedish |
My magic show went fine. People laughed when they were supposed to etc. I had some problems with walking in my very high heeled spike heel shoes (they are size XXL but much too small for me, since it is Japanese girl size XXL). People thought that was funny, so that was still good, I guess. It was also pretty funny when a photo of me kept appearing in one magic trick, but no one could recognize who it was since I was dressed as a woman on stage. I learned that it is annoyingly difficult to carry your magic props around with you when in women's clothing, since apparently women do not use pockets...

Magic show at a Halloween Party at cafe An Be
One of my friends has a "senpai" working in a restaurant/cafe/bar called Cafe An Be. My friend has done magic shows there many times, and when asked to do a show at their Halloween party, he asked me if I could help out, since he was running out of material. I said sure, and we ended up doing a half hour show together.
Before our time to go on stage, we waited around in the back for quite some time. We got some very nice food to eat, though, so that was fine. Before us, there was also a group of women performing poppy versions of anime songs and other music. They were very nice.
We did our magic show by first me doing one magic trick, then my friend doing one, then me again, and so on. This worked really well, and was a pretty good way to split up the work and to get some good variety into the show (we did not have time to rehearse any routines to do together).
I had been told that the audience would be mostly drunk grownups but it was in fact mostly families with children. I have a lot of material that works well with kids, but had not brought very much of that. I did have some things that work great with kids, though. When I ask kids to help me out on stage, usually there are lots of volunteers. This time, there were none, haha. Probably because I was dressed up as the "kuchi sake onna" (the "slit mouthed woman", a Japanese urban legend monster that kills children with her scissors).

In the subway |
Our show was appreciated. People laughed a lot, and afterwards people came up and wanted to take photos with me. One woman came up to me and said that she had thought I was actually a woman up until I started speaking, haha.
On the way back to the magic bar where we then were to do more magic, we met one of my friends in the subway. She thought it was strange to ride the subway dressed the way I was.

Magic at a Bridal company party
After the Halloween magic show, I immediately left for Tokyo to meet people from Sweden who were visiting. After a few intensive days in Tokyo, I flew back to Sapporo, went straight to work, and left from work straight for a party with people working in the bridal business.
A woman I know works with finding entertainers for weddings. She connects people organizing their weddings with people playing the violin etc. Sometimes people ask for a magician, and then she sometimes asks me if I have time to perform at a wedding or two.
At the party, lots of people in her business were gathering, so she wanted me to come and do some magic for the rest of them, in the hope that they might ask her (or recommend people getting married to ask her) for a magician.
I walked around the tables and did the tricks that I often do at weddings, and people were very impressed. I also saw the boss of one of the biggest bridal companies there, and we had met once before. I did a magic show at a wedding were the groom was one of his relatives, so he was sitting at one of the head tables. I was asked to do something special at his table this time, so I ended up putting a card that he had signed inside an unopened (sealed) PET bottle. He seemed very impressed with that (and the sponge rabbits trick I do).

Magic show at H's Cafe
In recent years, Halloween has become more and more popular in Japan. People celebrate Halloween by dressing up in mostly cute or sexy costumes and having parties. I was asked to do a magic show at a place called H's cafe, where I quite often have dinner (they have excellent hamburgers), at their Halloween party.
I dressed up as a zombie, since that means you can still have pockets to carry your magic props around with you. I got 30 minutes or so to do a show in front of all the people at the party. People seemed to enjoy it, though it was difficult to tell the facial expressions of most people.
There was also a costume competition at the party and I got second place there.

Magic show for the MACS English school
A week ago, I did a magic show for the children at the MACS English conversation school. I have been there many times before, and the kids are always very enthusiastic and seem to enjoy magic a lot. I did 30 minutes or so of magic, and then we had 30 minutes or so where I taught them two simple magic tricks that they can do themselves.
Since I have been there many times before, I was running low on new material. I was told that there would mainly be kids that had not seen me before, so I packed a bag full of things that usually go over well with kids, like sponges and picture cards. This year, I also finished with a signed card into a sealed PET-bottle, which especially the teachers thought was extremely mystifying.
My own favorite new thing was a quiz show style part, where we had a team of all the children and a team with all the teachers and they had to draw questions from a bag and if anyone in the team knew the answer the team got one point. The teachers kept drawing very difficult questions that they could not answer, while the kids got fairly easy questions regarding English, and since it was an English school they were supposed to know the answers. As to what was magic about this game, I made a magic prediction of what the final score was. This is a part of a trick from Tom Stone's book Maelstrom that I made to fit the English teaching environment. I find that children get tired after watching 10 to 15 minutes of magic, so when as in this case I am asked to do longer shows for kids, I try to find something that is not so tiring for the brain but that is still fun enough to keep everyone interested, to get 5 to 10 minutes of relaxation in the middle. I have also used a version of the "everyone gets bingo at the same time"-trick, where I usually make all the kids get bingo at the same time, and none of the teachers get bingo at all (though they get lots of numbers that fall on their bingo cards too).
Anyway, I had fun, the kids seemed to have lots of fun, and the teachers had fun, so it was a success I think.

Stage magic at a wedding
My room |
I did the magic coloring book, a very quick card trick with a huge deck of cards, produced large amounts of flowers from an empty paper bag, and did a reversed mind read trick where the groom was supposed to mind read from my mind which card I had put in an envelope (John Archer's version of the Kolossal Killer). I also did a gag trick with some small silk handkerchiefs and a panda, and then as a finale a card signed by the bride ended up inside a sealed (unopened) bottle of tea.
It was a lot of fun for me, and the guests seemed to enjoy it too. There was especially one older (?) man at a table near the stage that kept shouting funny comments to the things I were saying.
I had a huge room (bigger than my apartment) to wait around in back stage, and since the sound check was at 17:30 and my stage show at 20:00, I spent quite a lot of time there, haha.

Tenyo Special Magic 2014
This is the Tenyo Special Magic trick for 2014. If you buy three Tenyo products and send in the little stamps they come with, Tenyo sends you a free trick in their "plus one campaign", and this year the trick is an x-ray vision test kind of effect.
First you have the spectator shuffle the cards and you can sort them into black and red cards using your x-ray vision (looking only at the backs).
Next, the spectator can cut the (already more or less shuffled) cards and then deal the top three cards. Using your x-ray vision and a vision test helping patch (to cover one of your eyes), you can determine exactly which cards these are.
You can do it with more than three cards if you want to, and if you are a little bit clever you can do it with only two cards too. You can have spectators look at the backs of the cards for quite some time and they will (most likely) not notice anything. Taking a picture of the backs of the cards with a camera will usually make them look really suspicious, though, so making this movie took some effort.

Magic show for a yosakoi team
The stage was pretty far away from the audience |
I spent Sunday afternoon with the owner of our magic bar at a fancy hotel in the northern part of Sapporo. We did a magic show for a yosakoi team. There were 10 tables with about 10 persons per table. We did a stage show first, with my boss producing a bowling ball from a sketchbook and me hammering a nail into my nose and then doing my "perfect match" magic trick. Finally we did a funny two man ESP card routine.
A bunch of props to use on stage |
After the stage show, we walked around doing table magic too. I covered three tables, though a lot of people kept following me from table to table. My boss said he only did one table because more and more people kept congregating on that one table so he just stayed there.
Two magicians concentrating hard before going on stage |
Everyone seemed to have a good time, and people were screaming a lot, in a good way. We had lots of fun ourselves too. (Shin-Kotoni Tenbu Ryuujin) is one of my favorite teams to watch during the Sapporo Yosakoi festival too, so I hope they do well this year too (they usually do very well).

Yearly magic duel
Every year at the university staff "new year party", a professor who is learning magic finds me and asks me to show him some magic. This is a lot of fun, and it happened in 2013 and in 2012, as reported on this blog. It happened this year too, and I wrote about it on my other blog.

William Rader the mentalist, and me |

Me, doing a Christmas magic show at Bottom Cafe |
He said that he had been in Sapporo before, but that he had not managed to find any magic to watch at that time. This time, they had found my blog. When I told him there are at least six magic bars in Sapporo (and many many more in Tokyo etc.) he was very surprised.
The university magic club performers of this years Christmas show |
This time, his timing was very good and there were many other things related to magic to see too. He came to our magic bar (Magic Bar Twister) when I was working, and we went to the other magic bar in our chain (Trick Bar Twister) together too. He also came to see my Christmas Magic Show at Bottom Cafe, and he came to see the Hokudai Kijutsu Kenkyuukai (the university magic club) at the Christmas show. We also went together to the magic bar Hey Pola and to Cocktail Bar Harada and saw lots of magic there too.
Hey Pola (magician Nihei) |
The fluent in English magician Harada in Cocktail Bar Harada |
He was very nice, and it was interesting to talk to someone from abroad about magic. I learned magic in Sapporo, and though I talk to my Sapporo friends about magic it was very interesting to hear what is "hot" in the U.S. now etc. I also got some gifts; American playing cards of different types. So blogging does pay off sometimes.

Rabbit magic in Saitama
Here is a clip of me doing some magic with Tenyo sponge rabbits at New Years. I was visiting my brother and his wife who were in Saitama at her parents' place. One evening some friends of hers also showed up, and I was asked to do "the trick with the rabbits", haha. I also did some other magic, but this is the trick people like the most.
Other than the rabbits, I also hammered a nail into my nose to psychically detect what card had been picked, used a small iPhone accessory to find other cards, did a "perfect match" magic trick for one of the girls, and had a signed card end up inside an unopened PET-bottle.

Me Doing Magic at a BDSM Event
The last Friday of November, I did a magic show at the Rootstock Side Action 2013 bondage event. There were performances by bondage teams, by several bands (rock music), by a funny transvestite, and there was my magic show and a laser show. About 160 people showed up to watch, and there was a quite big stage to perform on. Apart from the performances on the stage, there were snakes and birds of prey to play with, food, drinks, strange clothes and fashion accessories on sale, and you could have tattoos and fangs fixed for you on the spot. You could also try being tied up by bondage experts.
I was asked to show up and do my show as a zombie, and if possible to do some bondage themed magic tricks. After leaving work at the university I rushed home and started painting my face. I arrived more or less in time to see the first performance on the stage. My own performance was much later, so I was a bit worried that my makeup would melt away if I started sweating, so I tried to stay away from the hotter rooms and not to exert myself too much.
Talking about mind reading |
Explaining that the mind reading waves are too weak so the antenna (nail) I am holding in my left hand might be necessary |
Next, I had a card picked from a jumbo sized deck of cards, and then tried to mind read what the selected card was using telepathy. The telepathic waves were not strong enough, so I used an antenna (a nail) that I hammered into my nose. Then I could mind read the card.
Hammering the antenna (nail) into my nose |
Next I did a short rope trick, since the other performances relied heavily on ropes (tying people up and then whipping them). First I used a Tenyo rope with a Pikachu on it. The rope turns soft or hard depending on magic power. I also used a normal rope which I had a spectator cut in half, and then I made the rope whole again. I also pulled the rope through my body.
Hammering the nail in the last few centimeters too |
Next, I had a card selected, stuffed the whole deck of cards into a slightly suspicious looking bag. I also put the rope from the previous trick into the bag, and stuffed a stuffed rabbit toy in there too. I then had a woman use one of the bondage teams' whip to whip the bag. She was one of the "S" people from one of the other performances, so she whipped me (my hand) hard several times, before actually doing what I asked her to do, haha. After whipping the bag, when pulling the rope out it turned out that the stuffed rabbit had been tied up with the rope into a bondage position, and it had the selected stuck in the rope creations too.
Me with a nail stuck in my nose, successfully doing mind reading |
I gave away the tied up stuffed toy to someone in the audience. I threw it pretty far away to someone who shouted that they wanted it. A month later, I saw the same toy rabbit hung in a bar I visited, so I guess the person who received either visits there or works there.
The rabbit from my show, found by chance in a bar a month later |
My final trick was a card trick where I signed card ended up inside an unopened (factory sealed) PET-bottle. I gave the PET-bottle with the card inside away to the girl who had signed the card.
Me and the event organizer |
The other performances were very good. I liked the bondage performances very much (I had only seen one bondage performance before this, when the event organizer took me to a bondage club to see a show so I knew what goes on in such shows so I could make magic tricks with a similar theme). The transvestite was very funny, I am told, though I missed almost all of it since I was on after him and had to be backstage getting ready. The bands were also very good, and they were super nice to talk too at the after party too. The things on sale were interesting, and the food was good too. The spectators were funny too. Some people showed up in quite spectacular outfits.
I also wrote about Rootstock Side Action 2013 and uploaded photos I took myself to my non-magic blog about things that happen to me in Sapporo.
