A majide again and again

I stayed in a hotel very close to the magic bar A Majide, so after the first day of the magic show in Osaka I stopped by there too. Despite being a quite small bar, they did a guillotine illusion the night I was there!

大阪に泊っていた時に、ホテルが「え～マジで」というマジックバーの近くだったから、マジックのイベントが終わってからえ～マジでにも行った。割と狭い店なのに、ギロチンのイリュージョンもやっていた！

On Sunday, the only magic bar that is open in Osaka (as far as I know) is A Majide, so I went there on Sunday too. (I have heard that in Kobe there is another magic bar that is also open on Sundays, but then I would not have been able to make it to airport in time for my plane on Monday morning). On Sunday I met a girl who loves cosplay (dressing up like anime or game characters) and who is a huge fan of the same manga/anime that one of my magician colleagues in Sapporo loves. I also got a magic prop as a present, since they probably think I spend too much time in their bar.

日曜日は大阪にやっているマジックバーはえ～マジでしかない（と思う）から、日曜日にも行った。（神戸にも日曜日もやっているマジックバーがあるらしいが神戸からだったら空港までが遠くて月曜日の朝の便間に合いそうもなかった。）日曜日にコスプレが大好きな女の子に会った。僕の札幌のマジシャンと同じアニメにハマっているそうだし。帰る時に、マジックバーからマジック道具のプレゼントも貰った。行きすぎかなぁ…

Magic Panic 3 in Osaka

On my way back to Sapporo from my trip to Sweden, I stayed two days in Osaka. This weekend, the magic event "Magic Panic 3" was held there. It is organized by the French Drop magic shop and magic bar. This year, they had invited the "Fat Brothers", three quite large and very good magicians, to give lectures and do a show. There was also several shows by various Japanese magicians, and a close up magic competition.

スウェーデンから札幌に帰る時に大阪にも2泊した。マジックショップ「フレンチドロップ」の「マジックパニック３」というクローズアップマジックのイベントがちょうどその時に大阪にあった。今年、ファットブラザーズという3人組のマジシャンがレクチャーとショーをしたから行きたかった。日本のマジシャンもショーをやったし、クローズアップのコンテストもあったし。

I went to the magic event almost straight from the airport. My plane was 30 minutes early in reaching Osaka, so I had just about the time to go by my hotel and leave my suitcase there.

入国して、ほぼ空港から直接マジックのイベントに行った。うちの便が予定よる30分早く着いたから、ホテルに荷物を置きにもギリギリ行けた。

There were about 100 people or so coming to the event. The location was a former warehouse that has been rebuilt with a stage and chairs in stepped rows. It is in a warehouse district and there was absolutely nothing else around there. The closest convenience store was about a 10 minutes walk away (which is very very far away by Japanese standards)! In a gift bag, you got a paddle and a pen, and an explanation of a small cute trick you can do with these.

The first morning had an opening session where two Japanese magicians did some parlor type magic.

参加者100人くらいが来ていた。本当に何もないところ（一番近いコンビニも歩いて10分くらいだった！）にあるステージが付いている建物にイベントが行われた。段差のある席が沢山あって、ステージもあったがステージがちょっと遠かったから席のすぐ前にテーブルが置いてあって、そこでマジックが見せられた。参加費を払ったら、パドルとペンを貰った。それを使って可愛いマジック出来るよって説明もあった。

初日の朝、日本人のマジシャン2人がサロンのマジックを見せてくれた。

Then, the first of the Fat Brothers, Christian Engblom from Finland, held his lecture. It was very nice. He showed some interesting effects and explained in very clear and easy to understand ways how to perform them. On effect was a very surprising and clean oil and water effect. Most of the things he showed were very clever uses of gimmicks, and not so much in the ways of super difficult moves.

昼の休憩の後、ファットブラザーズの1人目、フィンランドから来たクリスチャン・イングブルムがレクチャーをしてくれた。面白いマジックを見せて、凄く丁寧に解説してくれた。一番印象の残るマジックはかなり不思議なオイル＆ウォーターのマジックだった。主に賢いギミックの賢い使い方って感じのマジックを見せていた。難しい技法とかがなかった。

Later in the corridors during the breaks, I did see Christian do quite a lot of super difficult moves too, though. He is famous for his "anti-Farrow", a way to spring the cards so you can separate every other card into two different piles, which he showed with a borrowed deck. He also showed that you can separate the cards in to pile of 1-2-1-2... etc. too. He also did a very impressive trick where he borrowed a deck, had someone name a number, "8" and used the four 8s. A spectator got to put the 8s back in the deck, either together or apart, face up or face down, or some face up and some face down, some together and some apart. The spectator then put the deck together, and shuffled the deck a bit too. Christian then said that he was going to deal poker hands, and asked how many ("4") and which hand should win ("3"). Then it looked like he did a very fair deal, but all the 8s ended up at person number 3...

もっと後で、休憩の時にロビーで見たら、凄く難しい技法も色々見せていたけど。アンチ・ファローを考えた人としても有名なんだ。アンチ・ファローが凄く難しそうだね。借りたトランプで赤・黒をパーフェクトシャッフルして、トランプを飛ばすだけで、赤と黒が分ける。他にも、1枚・1枚に分けるんじゃなくて、1枚・2枚・1枚・2枚…に分けるとか、色々見せてくれた。他にも借りたトランプにお客さんに選んで貰った8で、8の4枚を取り出した。お客さんが自由にその4枚をバラでも、一緒でも、裏向きでも表向きでも（何枚か表、何枚か裏でも）、好きなようにトランプに戻した。お客さんが自分で戻して、自分でトランプを揃えて、自分で混ぜた。その後、お客さんに決めた「4人」でポーカーすることにした。4人分のポーカーにトランプを配ると、お客さんに決めて貰った「3人目」にその8、4枚全部その人に行った！凄かった、ｗ。

Christian also speaks Swedish, which I did not know before. So we spoke Swedish to each other for a little while.

クリスチャンさんもスウェーデン語が話せるんだ。僕が知らなかったが、僕がスウェーデン人だってクリスチャンが分かってから、2人でスウェーデン語で話した。

Next, it was time for the lecture from Miguel Angel Gea. He showed an taught some very impressive coin effects. The psychology and his thinking about things like that was also very interesting. He showed some fantastic things with coins, and some interesting things with a deck of cards and some rubber bands. Funniest and most impressive coin magic I have ever seen.

次、ミゲル・アンヘルヘアのレクチャーもあった。素晴らしいコインマジックを見せてくれて、解説した。コインに関しての心理的な考え方とかも、面白かった。コインの凄いマジック以外、トランプと輪ゴムのマジックもあった。今まで見たコインマジックの中の一番感動するマジックだった。

The last lecture was held by Dani DaOrtiz. He of course showed lots of crazy card magic. He said that the most important part in his performance is the psychological interaction with the spectators, the techniques with the fingers etc. are not so important and not so difficult. Though he did do some quite impressive things with his fingers too... When he explained some of the effects he had shown, it was quite interesting to realize that he was correct in that he did some fairly simple things but still no one caught on to what was going on because of the psychology. And I imagine it was more difficult than normal for him too, since he was doing everything with a guy translating for him, so the timing of the words was strange, there were long pauses waiting for translation, etc. Super funny, super impressive.

最後のレクチャーはダニ・ダオルティスのレクチャーだった。わけ分からない（凄い）カードマジックを見せてくれた。解説の時に、彼のマジックは技法より心理的なことだと言っていた。お客さんとのやり取りでカバーしているそうだ。でも、指先の凄いことも色々やっていたけど、笑。解説の時に、本当に簡単なことしかしていないのに、皆（多分）騙されたって分かったら、結構感動した。普段より難しかったんだろうしね。通訳して貰いながらマジックをやっていたから言葉のタイミングがおかしかったり、通訳を待っている長い間もあったり、心理的なことのタイミングが難しそうだね。凄く面白くて、尊敬するマジックだった。

Ponta the Smith

After the lectures there was a dinner break, and then there was a close up magic show with lots of Japanese magicians. The performance I liked most was the first performance: Ponta the Smith (who works at French Drop, the organizers of the event) did some interesting coin magic. There were some other magicians doing other types of magic, and Takemiya from French Drop also showed some crystal ball contact juggling. Finally, there was also a hypnotist called Birdie who did a fairly long hypnotist show, which was pretty funny.

晩御飯の休憩があって、最後に日本のマジシャンのショーもあった。色々な人が出ていた。一番最初に出たポンタ・ザ・スミスのコインマジックが一番面白かった。他にもマジックがあったし、フレンチドロップのタケミヤさんがコンタクト・ジャッグリングも見せたし、最後にバーディという催眠術師も割と長い催眠術のショーもしてし。面白かった。

Since everyone there was a magician, there were lots of magic going on during the breaks too. I saw the magician Ars doing some very impressive things with a regular deck of cards.

参加者全員マジシャンだった（と思う）から休憩の時にも廊下やロビーで色々な人がマジックをやっていた。例えば、アルスというマジシャンがえげつないことトランプでやっていた。

The even continued the next day, and in the morning there was a close up magic contest. There were 10 contestants. The styles varied wildly. The first contestant, Kit Cut, was a young guy who had a very low key style but did very difficult card moves very well. My favorite was David Chinsuko, who came in and danced around to loud music, put chocolate covered bread sticks up his nostrils and then sucked the chocolate off the sticks with one nostril and blew it back to another stick with the other nostril in time to music... Very funny, and not low key at all. He quite surprisingly ate the bread sticks after the music finished. The winner was "Toriaezu Johnny", who received 200,000 yen.

次の日も色々あった。朝からクローズアップのコンテストがあった。全部で10人が出ていた。見せ方やキャラのスパンが広かった。トップバッターのKit Cutさんが地味な見せ方で凄く難しいトランプの技法と使ってきれいにマジックを見せてくれた。僕の一番好きな人はデイビッド・ちんすこだった。ポッキーとプレツを鼻に入れて、音楽に合わせて鼻でチョコレートをポッキーから吸って、プレツに出した。ワイルドな演技だった。超面白かった。最後にポッキーを食べたし。優勝は「とりあえずジョニー」だった。20万円も貰った。

After lunch it was time for the thing I had looked forward to the most, the Fat Brothers' Show. The three Fat Brothers came out together, did an opening trick together, then did magic one at a time, with one trick done all of them together between each act, and a final closing trick done together too. In total they did about two hours of magic. It was fantastic!

昼休みの後、一番楽しみしていたファットブラザーズのショーが始まった！3人で出てきて、一緒にオープニングのマジックをやった。その後、1人1人でマジックをやって、演者が変わる時にまた皆で何かやったりしていた。最後にも皆で素晴らしいマジックをした。凄かった！

The opening with a sign card going from magician to magician in very mysterious ways was very fast and cool. Christian Engblom had a sign card end up in the chest pocket of his shirt, which he had never touched, and taken out by the spectator. Later it turned out that his shirt actually did not even have a chest pocket, which was very funny. Miguel did a coin matrix with 4 coins of different types and a spectator turning over the cards covering the coins. Dani did a very funny "self working" trick of the "do as I do" that turned more and more complex until no one seemed to be able to keep up and do what he did. He complained that perhaps the translations were incorrect, since the spectators that were supposed to keep up with him did not have the same amount of cards in their hands as he did, haha. They did some funny stuff with the "Wow" gimmick, and for the ending everyone did a different version of the triumph trick. A very very entertaining show.

オープニングのネタは、サインカードがマジシャンから次のマジシャンに不思議なように移動した。クリスチャンさんの一番うけたマジックはサインカードが（触っていない）ワイシャツのポケットに入って、観客が自分でポケットからだした。もうちょっとしたら、「実は一番不思議なのは、このシャツにポケットがないんだよね」ってクリスチャンが言いだす。もう1回見たら、ポケットが消えた！（笑）ミゲルさんがコインのマトリックスに4種類のコインを使って、毎回観客がコインの上のカードを自分で捲っていた。ダニさんが「セルフ・ワーキングだよ」と言いながら、ドゥ・アス・アイ・ドゥみたいなマジックをやった。最初は観客も皆簡単に付いて行けたがどんどん速くなって、どんどん複雑になって、誰も付いて行けないことになった。突然止まって、「皆何枚持っている？え？間違っているけど…」になって、もしかしたら通訳があっていないから変になっているかと言い出した、笑。他にも「Wow」ギミックを使って面白いマジックを皆だやっていた。最後に皆がそれぞれのトラインフもやった。超面白いショーだった！

This woman is a normal grown up Japanese woman (or slightly tall for being Japanese), but compared to the jacket of one of the Fat Brothers, show looks like a dwarf. You could fit four normal Japanese people in that jacket...

Osaka stopover, French Drop and A Maji De

On my to Sweden to visit my relatives, I had a one night stay in Osaka. I arrived in the evening and took the time to visit the magic bars French Drop and A Majide.

スウェーデンに行く時に大阪経由で行って、大阪に１泊した。夜にマジックバーフレンチドロップもえーまじでも行った。

The guys at French Drop remembered me, even thought I have only been there once before and that was about two years ago. There were three magicians there, Loki, Takemiya, and David Chinsuko. They were very funny to talk to, and they did a lot of magic for me. The funniest was David Chinsuko snorting the chocolate off Pocky-sticks when he had them stuck up his nostrils.

フレンチドロップのマジシャンが僕のことを覚えてくれた。前に１回しか行ったことないし、２年前に行ったのに…マジシャン３人もいた：ロキ・Takemiya・デビッドちんすこう。面白い話もたくさんあったし、いろいろなマジックも見せてもらったし、楽しかった。一番うけたのはデビッドちんすこうさんがポッキーを鼻に入れて、チョコレートだけ吸い込んだ。

I also visited the magic bar A Majide, which was very close to my hotel. I have been there several times recently, so they of course remembered me. Last time the master of the place kept talking about how good the sweets from Sapporo are, and how much he would like to eat such Sapporo sweets etc. I got the hint and brought a small pack of the most popular Sapporo gift sweets. As usual when I arrive, they were quite busy and a stage show was about to start. After the show was over, they were not busy at all, so we sat and talked about all kinds of things for a while.

マジックバーえ～まじでにも行った。ホテルのすぐ近く。最近何回も行っているから、勿論覚えられた。この間行った時にマスターがずっと「札幌のお土産美味しいよね」とか「札幌のお土産が食べたいなぁ」と言っていたから今回ちゃんとマルセイバターサンドを持って行った（笑）。相変わらず、僕が入る時にちょうど大きなショーが始まった。ショーの後は割りと暇で、面白い話も結構した。

A letter from Osaka

When I went to our magic bar a few days ago, there was a letter addressed to me waiting there. It was from Monsieur Pierre in Osaka. It was kind of a newsletter about the bar Magic Time. Very cute hand drawn illustrations.

この間うちのマジックバーに行ったら、僕に手紙が届いていた。大阪のムッシュピエールさんからだった。バーマジックタイムのメールマガみたいなものだった。手で描いた絵が可愛い。

A~majide again

On my way home from Osaka, I also had time to visit the magic bar "A maji de" again. It is the only magic bar I know of in Osaka that is open on Sundays. I went there on Sunday evening and it was packed. There was a group of high school teachers there that were very funny to talk to. They were interested in Sweden, and they laughed at my t-shirt.

大阪から帰る時にマジックバーえ～マジでにも行けた。大阪の日曜日にやっている店はそこしか知らない。日曜日の夜に行って、かなり混んでいた。高校（？）の先生の団体がいた。面白い人たちだった。スウェーデンの話もしていたし、ティシャツも突っ込んでくれたし。

When I arrived a magic show was just about to begin at the show table, and the teachers were kind enough to squeeze together to make room for me too. Later, two more guests showed up and everyone squeezed together even more so these two could see the show too.

僕が入った時にちょうどショーテーブルでマジックショーが始まる感じだった。混んでいたが皆頑張ってくれて、僕も入るようになった。その後、カップルも入ってきて、皆もっと頑張って、そのカップルもマジックショー見れるようになった。

We got to see the young magician Korogi do quite a lot of funny magic, and then we got to see master Kubo do a full show too. Both of them did a lot of the same magic that I saw last time I was there, but they also did quite a bit of magic that I had not seen before. Korogi did a fun trick where the audience mixed up a small Rubik's cube, and then he took a big Rubik's cube and in 3 seconds made it into the same random pattern as the small cube. Master Kubo did a trick where three coins on the table turned into four coins, and then he took one coin away so it was three coins again. They then turned into four coins again, which was repeated very many times. Very clean.

若いマジシャンのコオロギのマジックも見せて貰ったし、マスター久保のマジックショーも見れたし、面白かった。前に行った時と同じマジックが結構あったが見たことなかったマジックも色々見せて貰った。コオロギさんがお客さんにぐちゅぐちゃして貰った小さなルービックキューブに合わせて、３秒で大きなルービックキューブを同じようにした。全面同じになった。マスター久保がコイン３つを４つにして、コイン１つ取った。テーブルにある３つのコインがまた４つになった。永遠繰り返しても大ジョブなマジックみたいで、何回もやっていた。不思議だった。

After the big group of guests left, several small groups of new guests came, so in the end they did a new full set of magic, so I got to see the two magicians do their shows twice. Lots of fun.

団体とカップルが帰ったら、またお客さん何人も入ったから、結局もう１回ショーが始まった。沢山マジック見れて楽しかった。

Magic bar review: Magic Time

On my trip to Osaka for my friend's wedding I did find time to visit the magic bar "Magic Time" in Osaka too. It is run by the very funny magician "Monsieur Pierre". I had seen him one before, in Vernon's Bar (also in Osaka), but now he has opened his own bar. Bar Magic Time is located very close to Vernon's Bar.

友達の結婚式の為に大阪に行った時に「マジックタイム」というマジックバーに行く時間も見つけた。ムッシュ・ピエールさんのマジックバーなんだ。前にバーノンズバーというマジックバーで1回ムッシュ・ピエールを見た。結構好きなキャラだ。今独立して、バーノンズバーの近くにあるマジックタイムでマジックを披露している。

The bar is quite small, with a counter that seats about 8 people or so, and some small tables against the other wall. These tables and chairs are on an elevated part of the bar, so sitting at the tables you can still see any magic being performed at the counter. The bar is run by Monsieur Pierre and his wife. There are specific show times when a magic show starts and you are expected to show up before or after a show, not in the middle of an ongoing show.

店が割りと狭い。8名入るくらいのカウンターがメインで、他に小さなテーブルもある。テーブル席はカウンター席と段差があるので、テーブル席でもカウンターのマジック見れる。いい作りだと思った。ムッシュ・ピエールと奥さんで2人でやっている店だ。決まったショータイムの時間にマジックショーがある。ショーの最中には入って欲しくない。

I showed up early for the very first show of the day. Apart from me there was also a couple in their thirties or so (I can never tell with Japanese people) and a family with of three with a high school kid who also did magic.

僕が早く入って、その日の一番早い時間のショーを見た。他に３０代（かな？日本人の歳分からない）のカップルと家族３人もいた。家族の高校生の息子も自分でマジックをやっているそうだ。

Before the magic show started Monsieur Pierre gave us some riddles to think about to pass the time. One was: "How do you turn the false equality '1 / 100 = 100' into a true equality [so no making the '=' into a not equal sign] by drawing one straight line?" which I figured out fairly quickly. He also told some funny stories.

ショーの時間になる前にムッシュ・ピエールが面白い小学校の入学式の問題とかを出して、面白い喋りで時間つぶした。問題の例は：「1 / 100 = 100」に直線１つ書いて、正しくして下さい。「＝」に直線を引いて、ノットイコールにするのが駄目だった。まあまあ早く解いたから、小学校に入れるみたい、ｗ。

Then the magic show started. For about 45 minutes Monsieur Pierre did lots of magic while being very funny. There were lots of puns in Japanese, and the ones I could understand (possibly there were others that I did not notice) were quite funny. He did close up magic at the bar counter, and he used nice looking props from Mikame Craft, did magic with cards, very very quickly solved a Rubik's cube, did magic with coins, etc. We got to see most of his famous tricks, like the jokers that ride two on one bicycle, or his necktie disappearing and appearing under a handkerchief. There was also a lot of magic that I had not seen before, neither on TV nor at Vernon's Bar.

その後、ショーが始まった。約４５分のマジックショーだった。ムッシュ・ピエールが色々なマジックをして、面白い話もした。オヤジギャグが多くて、面白かった。僕が結構笑った。カウンターでクローズアップマジックを見せて貰った。ミカメクラフトのマジック道具を使ったり、トランプマジックしたり、ルビックキューブを凄く早く解いたり、コインマジックしたりして、色々なマジックがあった。ムッシュ・ピエールの有名なマジック、例えば二人乗りのジョーカーやネクタイがなくなってまた出てくるマジックもあったし、僕が見たことなかったマジック（バーノンズバーでもテレビでも観ていなかったマジック）もあったし、面白かった。

Bar Magic Time also has a stamp card system, and if you get three stamps in a certain amount of time, you get 1000 yen off the next time you go. Monsieur Pierre also asked us if we new the old Japanese word for March, and anyone that new it would get an extra stamp for free. Since someone new and said it out loud, everyone of course got an extra stamp. Lots of small funny interactions that made the visit very pleasurable.

マジックタイムのスタンプカードもあった。期間中にスタンプ３つ集めると１０００円割引になる。ムッシュ・ピエールに「３月の古い呼び方知っていますか？」と聞かれて、知っていればスタンプもう１個貰うということだった。誰かが知っていたから、その人が答えてから勿論皆スタンプもう１個簡単に貰えた、笑。そういう小さなギャグも多くて、面白かった。


Summary:
Location: In the entertainment area near Osaka station and Umeda.
Type of magic: Close up.
Quality of magic: Very good.
Cost: Cheap, 3500 yen if you do not drink that much.
Interior: Nice.
Staff: Very funny and friendly.
Overall impression: Funny. Very good magic. Cheap. Highly recommended.

Randi Atsushi, who I have seen before, had gotten a huge name tag put inside his jacket. This was quite funny and he kept showing it at strange times during his performance.

Last week I went to Osaka for a meeting at Osaka university. I had the nights free, so I managed to visit two magic bars. I went to "A - majide" and "Vernon's bar". Both were very nice. I got to see two magicians at A - majide, neither of which I had seen perform before, and I saw no less than four magicians at Vernon's bar, two of which I had seen before.

先週出張で大阪に行ってきた。夜に仕事がなかったからマジックバーにいけた。「エーマジで」と「バーノンズバー」に行った。両方面白かった。エーマジでマジシャン2人がマジックを見せてくれた。バーノンズバーでマジシャン4人もいたが2人は前に見たことあった。

Magic Bar Review: A - Maji De ・ エーマジで

Recently I went to Osaka for a business trip and I had a chance to visit the magic bar "A - majide" on the night before our meeting. The guy running A-majide is the same guy that ran the magic bar A-omoro when I was in Osaka last time, and these bars are very similar. I wore a t-shirt saying "I am not Japanese" in Japanese, which they kindly enough commented on a lot (most people in Japan do, since they think it is obvious that I am not Japanese even without that shirt).

最近出張で大阪に行ってきた。「エーマジで」というマジックバーにもいけた。エーマジでの店長は前に行った「あーおもろ」の店長だった。その店とよく似ている店なんだ。僕が「日本人ではありません」と書いてあるティシャツを着て入ったから、大阪の人が勿論皆突っ込んでくれた。見た目がかなり外国人なので、ティシャツが必要ないって言われる。

The interior design was nice. There was one show area, with a crescent shaped table with 7 or 8 seats, good lighting, a sound system, a good mat, and good line of sights for everyone watching. There was also a bar counter where they also did some magic, and where they served drinks and let you sit and chat when they were not doing magic.

店のインテリアがきれいだ。マジックショー用の半月のテーブルがあって、７～８人が座れる。そこはライト・サウンド・マットとか、色々ショーに良いことが出来る。バーのカウンターもあって、そこでもマジックを見せてくれる。飲み物作ったり喋りしたりするところだ。

When I entered, a magician called Korogi was in the middle of a magic show for four Japanese men at the bar counter. I was asked to sit next to them and watch the rest of the performance with them. Korogi did some fork bending, with some ideas I had not seen before, he did a card trick were a beef patty (not real, but looking real and the same size as a real edible one) shows up in a deck of cards without you noticing how it got there (one of my friends in Sapporo also used to do this trick a lot), and he managed to make a deck of cards that I had shuffled end up in order from Ace to King in each suit through some magical means. He was pretty good and quite funny.

僕が入った時にバーのカウンターでコオロギというマジシャンがお客さん４人にマジックを見せていた。僕が隣に座って一緒に観た。フォーク曲げ（僕が観たことない技も入ってた）・トランプからハンバーグが出てくる（僕の札幌の友達もよくやっていた）・僕が切ったトランプが全部不思議なように揃ったマジックを見せてくれた。上手だったし、面白かったし。

Next, "master Kubo" ("master" as in the boss of the place, indicating the owner) did a magic show for us after we had moved to the crescent shaped table. He did some rubber band magic, some card tricks where selected cards ended up under the glass of a spectator, mystically moving out of the deck without anyone touching it, ended up stuck to the arm of another spectator far up under his suit sleeve, etc. He also did a mentalist trick were each spectator in order got to pick either a cell phone, a wallet, or a watch that were all borrowed from different spectators. Despite having his back to us, master Kubo always managed to guess which object we took. Another mentalist effect was were he asked each of for some information, such as "Where would you go if you were to abroad tomorrow? What will you have for lunch tomorrow? What is the name of some girl you like now?" etc. When we all had answered one question each, he showed us a fan letter he had received this morning. When opening this and taking out the letter, it contained a huge letter (like 1 meter wide huge) with huge lettering stating: "Hi, this is [name of girl someone had mentioned]. I am writing to you from [country I mentioned] to thank you for the [food someone mentioned] dinner we had" and so on. Finally there were some levitating effects and a rose made from tissue turned into a real rose. A very nice show.

次、マスター久保が半月のショーテーブルでマジックショーをやってくれた。輪ゴムのマジック・トランプマジック（グラスの下・触っていないのカードが動く・お客さんの袖の中に選んだカードが張り付いているとか）色々見せてくれた。メンタリズムもあった。お客さんから借りた財布・携帯・時計があって、マジシャンが見ていないのに、お客さんが好きなものを持つとマジシャンが何を取ったか分かるマジック。他にも、皆に質問して、「明日旅行すれば、どこに行く？明日何を食べる？最近気になった女の子の名前は？」、手紙を出した。封筒から手紙を出すと意外にでかい（１メートルくらい）手紙に「○○ちゃんです（お客さんの気になっている女の子の名前）。今中国（僕が選んだ国）に来てて、この間一緒に食べたオムライス（お客さんが言った食べ物）が美味しかったね！」とか…全部当てた。最後に浮く系マジックがあって、ティッシュのバラが本物になった。凄かった。面白かった。

Osaka is famous in Japan for having many comedians, and every citizen of Osaka is expected to be funny. The staff of A - majide were all pretty funny, and after the magic was finished it was a lot of fun just listening to them talking too.

大阪は勿論お笑いも有名だ。大阪人皆お笑い芸人みたいなイメージがある。エーマジでのスタッフがその通り。マジックをやっていない時にほとんど漫才みたいになっている。面白かった。


Summary:
Location: In the middle of the Osaka entertainment district.
Type of magic: Close up.
Quality of magic: Good.
Cost: Very cheap, 2000 yen charge and then you pay for what you drink. I paid about 4000 yen total.
Interior: Nice, especially liked the magic show area.
Staff: Very funny and friendly.
Of special note: When not doing magic, the staff is constantly doing stand up comedy, which was funny.
Overall impression: Very funny. Cheap. Good magic. Open late. Highly recommended.

Magic Bar Review: A - omoro ・ あーおもろ

Our last stop during our magic bar tour of Osaka was "A omoro". The owner is a good friend of the owner of the Twister magic bars in Sapporo where I do magic, so this was also a place where we had high expectations. After mentioning Twister, they gave us decks of cards with the A omoro design, so they were very nice to us. The first thing I noticed was that the design was very nice. The sign outside the bar, the sign right by the door, the tables, the counters, the walls, everything looked very modern, hip, cool, and beautiful.

大阪のマジックバー巡りの最後が「あーおもろ」という店になった。あーおもろのオーナーさんと僕が出ているマジックバー「ツイスター」のオーナーさんが仲良いなので、大阪に行ったら絶対あーおもろに行かないとね！楽しみだった。ツイスターの話をしたら、あーおもろのトランプとかを貰った！あーおもろの最初の印象が「お洒落」だった。外の看板やドアの前の看板や店のインテリアとか、何でもお洒落だった。

We came to A omoro quite late, well after midnight, on a Monday, so there were not so many guests left in the bar. There was one couple seated at the counter but they left soon after we arrived. Then we got our own private magic show at the counter.

あーおもろに着いたのが月曜日の遅い時間だったからお客さんがもうほとんどいなかった。カウンターにカップルがいたがうちらが入った時に帰った。その後貸しきり状態でプライベートのマジックショーを見せて貰った！

Osaka is famous in Japan for being a place of stand up comedy, and all people living in Osaka are expected to be funny. This was quite true at A omoro. Before the magic started, there was around 20 or 30 minutes of the owner and the first magician doing stand up comedy. Like introducing the magician in some weird way and the magician trying to adapt to that, giving up, exiting the room to be introduced again (in yet another bizarre way) etc. They were very funny.

大阪はお笑いのイメージが強いね。あーおもろでは、「さすが大阪だな」って感じだった、笑。マジックが始まる前に20～30分くらい漫才があった。マジシャンが登場する前にふざけた紹介されて、入ったマジシャンがそれに怒って裏に帰るとか。面白かった。

When the actual magic started, the magic was good too. We got to see Daichi Kitano, who did a lot of comedy magic, and Toshiaki Kobayashi who did more "normal" magic. Both did a lot of magic that I had not seen other magicians perform.

マジック自体が始まったら、マジックも良かった。キタノ大地と小林俊晶がマジックを見せてくれた。2人とも他のマジシャンがやっているのを観たことないマジックが多かった。

Us again, this time with the owner (who also does magic, though not when we were there).

First we got to see Daichi Kitano. He did many funny tricks like the "Size Surprise" where some cards suddenly change size drastically, but also did a lot of "normal" magic like coin tricks and ace productions. A cell phone appeared in a mysterious way. He was very funny.


最初、キタノ大地だった。ふざけてて面白いネタが多かった。サイズサプライズというトランプの大きさが突然激しく変わるマジックとか。もっと普通なマジックも色々やっていたけど。コインマジックとか、エースプロダクションとか。不思議なように携帯が現れたし。面白かった。笑った。

Second, we saw Toshiaki Kobayashi. He did more traditional magic but did a lot of tricks that most other magicians do not perform. His chop cup routine was very nice. He once pulled out a box of jigsaw puzzle pieces and said "Just looking at this, it is hard to tell what the finished puzzle will look like, yes?" and we agreed. But it was actually the same Mona Lisa puzzle I had bought at the Daiso dollar store (everything costs only 105 yen) and used for the same magic trick before! Strange coincidence.

次は小林俊晶だった。ふざけたマジックではなくて、割と普通な感じのマジックを見せてくれた。他のマジシャンがほとんどやらないマジックが多くて良かった。チョップカップが良かったなぁ。ちょっとうけたのは、箱にパズルのピースが沢山ぐちゃぐちゃな状態になって、「パズルですがどんな絵になるか分かりませんよね？」と聞かれて、「そうですよね」と2人で言った。でも、「あ！僕が同じマジックをやりたかった時にダイソーで買ったモナリサのパズルだ！」ってすぐ気付いた、笑。偶然だね。

Magic Bar Review: Vernon's Bar ・ バーノンズバー

Me and ムッシュピエール

On our Osaka magic bar trip, we also visited "Vernon's Bar". I looked forward to seeing Messieur Pierre live, since I like his TV performances.

大阪のマジックバー巡りで、「バーノンズバー」にも行った。ムッシュピエールのマジックを生で観るのが楽しみだった。テレビで観るのが好きだ。

The interior of the place was fairly small, but very nice looking. It had an old atmosphere, and there were pictures of Dai Vernon (very famous magician). We first sat at the counter, waiting for the current magic show to finish. Then we were moved to a table where we would be shown magic by several magicians. We got to see four performances. We saw Sammy Hioki, Randy Atsushi, and Messieur Pierre himself. We also got to see a woman who's name I do not remember. She was a student in a magic class that they give at Vernon's bar, and as a final graduation thing the students perform for regular customers. We were asked if it would be OK for her to show us magic and we were very happy to have the chance to see one more magician.

店のインテリアがまあまあ狭いがきれいだった。昔の雰囲気で、ダイ・バーノン（有名なマジシャン）の写真とか飾ってある。最初カウンターの席になって、入った時にもう始まっていたパフォーマンスが終わるまでにちょっと待っていた。そして、低いテーブルに移って他のお客さんと一緒に色々なマジックを見せて貰った。4人のマジシャンのパフォーマンスも見れた。サミー・ヒオキ、ランディー熱、ムッシュピエールのマジックに見せて貰った。他にバーノンズバーのマジック教室の卒業生のマジックも見せて貰った。教室の最後に、普通のお客さんにマジックを見せることになるそうだ。教室の人のマジックも観ても大丈夫ですかって聞かれて、喜んで観た。

After the magic performances were over, we moved to the counter and spoke to Messieur Pierre for a long time. He was very nice and very funny. He seemed to like talking, and talked a lot. He told us about trips to Hokkaido (were we came from), hardships of being on TV a lot, random stories unrelated to magic, and much much more. He also snuck into the background of pictures when we were taking photos with other magicians and did other funny things like that.

マジックが終わってから、またカウンターに移動して、ムッシュピエールさんと長く話していた。面白い話が多かった。喋るのが好きみたい、笑。北海道に行った時の話やテレビによく出る時期の大変さの話や、マジックの全然関係ない話とか、色々な話をした。他のマジシャンと写真を撮る時に、よく見たら後ろにピエールさんが変な顔で入っていたり、色々な面白いこともしていた。

Sami Hioki did some rope magic, used Rocky the Raccoon in a card trick, did an interesting 4 ace production by building an airplane out of cards, did some floating effects, and ended with a mental effect (cards with numbers on the back).

サミー・ヒオキがロープマジック・ラクーンを使ったカード当て・トランプで飛行機型のを作ってエース4枚を出すマジック・浮く系、色々なマジックを見せてくれた。最後にカードのメンタルネタもやった。

A student graduating from Vernon's Bar's magic class by performing for us. Her name was possibly Yoko, but I did not catch the name properly at the introduction.

Next up was the student from Vernon's Bar's magic class. I do not properly remember her name, but it may have been Yoko. She did a trick with a 5000 yen bill and a 1000 yen bill changing places inside an envelope I was holding, and a pretty packet trick with rain clouds and sunny weather.

次はマジック教室の女の人だった。名前はちゃんと聞き取れなかったがもしかしたら「ヨーコ」さんだったかもしれない。5000円札と1000円札が僕の手にあった封筒の中に入れ替わった。きれいなパケットトリックで、雨のカードと太陽のカードが虹になった。上手だった。

Then we got to see Randi Atsushi, who seemed to be a big fan of Akira Fujii. He did some coin tricks, some card tricks, and the linking cigarettes, all more or less the way Fujii-san does them. He is the person to do the linking cigarettes the best of all the times I have seen it so far. Even better than when Fujii-san did it in front of me.

ランディー熱さんが藤井あきらのマジックが好きみたい。コインもトランプも藤井さんのやり方のマジックを見せてくれた。リンキン・シガレットもやった。今まで色々なマジシャンのリンキン・シガレットを見たがランディー熱のが一番きれいだった。藤井さんのを見た時よりもきれいだった。

Last we got to see Messieur Pierre. He turned out to speak English very well (which is not common in Japan). He keeps claiming he is French (part of his character) but his French is not so good (on purpose, probably). Messieur Pierre was the technically most proficient magician we saw in Osaka, I think. He was very good. He was also quite funny (I like his character and performance style), and he did a lot of magic that I have not seen other magicians do.

最後にムッシュピエールのマジックも見せて貰った。英語がかなり上手にびっくりした。フランス人ですって言い張っているくせにフランス語はそうでもなかった（そういうキャラだからわざとそうしていると思うね）が英語が本当に上手だった。技法が上手で、大阪で見たマジシャンの中の一番上手だったと思う。面白かったし。そのキャラや見せ方が好きだ。他のマジシャンがやっていないマジックも沢山やっていたし。

We got to see magic with silk handkerchiefs, a coin box where coins kept melting through the bottom etc. and finally the coin melted into water(!), his more famous card tricks (ambitious card, card to necktie, the kings riding bicycles on the joker cards etc.), the cards kept ending up inside a card box even though he had taken them out and put away the box, and finally for some reason his necktie disappeared from around his neck and ended up under a handkerchief on the table (I did not notice when he removed the necktie and was quite surprised, haha).

シルクのマジックを見た。コインボックスにコインが入って貫通するマジックで最後にコインが水に変わったのが驚いた。ムッシュピエールの有名なネタも沢山見せて貰った（アンビシャスカード・カードツーネクタイ・二人乗りのジョーカー・箱から出したトランプをもう一回箱から出す）。最後にムッシュピエールがしていたネクタイが突然テーブルの上にあったハンカチの下にあった。いつ外したか、全然気付かなかった。

Location: Conveniently located near (in?) the Umeda shopping and entertainment area.
Type of magic: Close up
Quality of magic: Very high
Cost: 6000 yen
Interior: Very nice old western style interior
Staff: Very nice
Overall impression: A nice place, with good magicians doing interesting magic. The best magician I saw in Osaka was probably Messieur Pierre.

Magic Bar Review: French Drop ・ マジックバーフレンチドロップ

In 2011, I went to Osaka with a friend with one of the goals being to visit some of Osaka's famous magic bars. Our first stop was the magic bar "French Drop", which is co-located with the web shop of the same name that is one of the more famous shops for magic props in Japan.

2011年に友達と2人で大阪に行った。有名なマジックバーを回る目的がメインだった。最初のマジックバーは「フレンチドロップ」になった。有名なマジックショップ「フレンチドロップ」も同じ建物にある。

We went there on a Monday, right at the opening hour. That meant that there were no other customers, just me and my friend so we got a private show. There were however more magicians than normal. Usually there are two magicians each day that will perform for you, but when we were there there
were four magicians and they all decided to do shows for us so we were quite lucky.

行ったのが月曜日の早い時間だったから、他にお客さんがいなかった。貸切状態でプライベートのマジックショーを見せて貰った、笑。マジシャンが普段毎日2人がいるそうだがその日がたまたま4人だった。暇で、皆うちらにマジックを見せてくれた。

French drop has a half moon shaped performance area with several rows of seats available for the spectators. After all the magic shows ended we moved to some seats at the bar counter instead and sat there talking shop for more than an hour.

フレンチドロップのパフォーマンスエリアが半月の形できれいだった。お客さん席が2～3段もあった。マジックショーが終わってから、別の席（カウンター）に移って、マジシャン同士の話を1時間以上した。

We got to see Takemiya, Loki, David Chinsuko, and Johnny. At French drop they have a nice sound system and apparently one magician is assigned to do the sound stuff for the performing magician, so they did stuff were they performed magic in sync with music. The performance area was very nice, and it was big enough to do some stage type (or at least parlor) effects too. Mostly they showed us close up magic, though. There were also some juggling type performances, and some fire magic that seemed fairly close to setting the curtains on fire, haha.

観たマジシャンはTakemiya・ロキ・デビッドしんすこう・とりあえずジョニーだ。フレンチドロップの音・音楽のシステムが良かった。マジシャンがパフォーマンス中の時に別のマジシャンに音や音楽の色々やって貰えるそうだ。音楽に合わせてマジックをやるとか、色々ないい使い方にしていた。パフォーマンスエリアが割りと広くてステージっぽいマジックやジャグリングも出来る。主にクローズアップを見せて貰ったがサロン系のマジックもジャグリングも見せて貰った。

Taking the magicians in turn, Johnny did a lot of card flourish style things, for instance a flashy 4 ace production. He also did a funny coin trick with a coin that defied gravity and flew upwards which he explained was possible because it had a huge spring welded to it. Though I am fairly sure that there was no such spring there at first, haha. Also, the spring seemed to be on the wrong side of the coin to actually help with flying. He also impressed us by producing a very large number of Oreo cookies from his mouth.

出た順番で行けば、最初はジョニーだった。フラリッシュ系カードマジックを色々見せてくれた。エース4枚が派手なように出てくるとか。コインが飛ぶマジックで、解説みたいに「実はここにバネが付いているんだ」って言い出した。またコイン見たら、かなりでかいバネが確かに付いていたが最初はなかったと思う、笑。そして、またコインを飛ばす時に、バネが役立たない側にあったし！うけた。口から沢山のOreoクッキーを出した時も良かった。

Loki did some fire magic, some beautiful contact juggling with rings, some magic with hamburger, and did a lot of funny card magic where your expectations were betrayed over and over. He also did the coin muscle pass with a jumbo coin, which was pretty funny. He did a very nice version of the "thumb time" magic trick, some fork bending, and more.

ロキが火を使ったマジックでスタートした。最後に大きなリングを使ったジャグリングっぽいパフォーマンスした。その間、色々なクローズアップマジックを見せてくれた。ハンバーガーが出てきた。うちらが何回も裏切られたカード当てしたり、ジャンボコインでマッスルパスをしたりして、面白かった。フォーク曲げやサムタイムとか、色々やっていた。

David Chinsuko said he was from Okinawa so he had an Okinawan theme to his magic. This meant producing goya fruits (an Okinawan plant) and wearing goya shaped glasses. He was very funny, with lots of below the belt jokes, and most of his magic were of the "haha, funny" kind. He produced a bottle from inside a balloon, and after producing sliced goya from a handkerchief, the same bottle once again appeared out of the handkerchief. I also liked his production of large amount of sponge balls from his mouth. He also swallowed a huge balloon.

デビッドしんすこうが沖縄から来たって言って沖縄をテーマとしたマジックをした。ゴーヤが出てくるとか。ゴーヤのメガネもしていた。ふざけてて面白いマジックが多かった。シモネタも多かった。凄いマジックも色々あったけど。風船から瓶が出てきて、ハンカチからゴーヤスライスが沢山出てきてから、またハンカチから同じ瓶が出てきた。口からスポンジを沢山出したのも好きだった。長い風船も飲んだ。

Takemiya did some contact juggling with a crystal ball, snorted a match up his nose and then produced a lot of sparks from the nose, and quite a lot of card magic. There was a trick were the two jokers melted closer and closer to the middle of a deck of cards and finally surrounded only one card, which turned out to be the card only thought of by one of us spectators.

Takemiyaがクリスタルボールのコンタクトジャグリングを音楽に合わせてした。一番笑った時は、鼻でマッチを吸って、鼻から火が出た。カードマジックも色々見せてくれた。ジョーカーがどんどんトランプの真ん中のほうに来て、最後に一枚だけはさんで、その一枚がうちらが頭の中で考えたカードだった。

Summary:
Location: Not near anything else of interest in Osaka except the magic shop French Drop which is in the same building. Not that difficult to get to by subway, though.
Type of magic: Mainly close up, with some parlor and juggling.
Quality of magic: high
Cost: around 5000 yen
Interior: Quite beautiful performance area, cozy interior overall
Staff: Very nice
Of special note: The sound system was good, the use of sound was good, and the music was nice.
Overall impression: Nice magic, very friendly and funny magicians. Fairly cheap too.

場所：他に面白いところが近くにない（フレンチドロップのマジックショップ以外）が地下鉄で割りと行き易い。
マジックの種類：クローズアップがメインで、サロンもジャグリングもちょっとあった

Osaka trip: Tenyo in the subway! ・ 大阪の地下鉄でテンヨー

When moving from one magic bar to another in Osaka, I spotted some kids playing with the butterfly in a jar item from the Tenyo magic dealer! So I figured I would have to take a picture.

大阪のマジックバーから次のマジックバーの移動の時に地下鉄でマジックメーカーテンヨーの蝶々で遊んでいる人がいた。盗撮しなきゃ！と思った。

Osaka trip: Magic Shop French Drop ・ 大阪旅行、マジックショップフレンチドロップ

On Sunday I left for Osaka early in the morning (having left our magic bar earlier than normal since my train for the airport left at 6 A.M.). The first day I spent with a friend I first met in Sweden, doing things unrelated to magic. On Monday I met up with another magic maniac from Sapporo and we had a magic tour of Osaka.

日曜日に凄い早起きして（マジックバーから早く（２４時半）帰って、空港行きの６時発の列車に間に合うように）大阪に行った。日曜日はスウェーデンで知り合った日本人の友達とマジックと全く関係ないことしていた。月曜日に札幌からの僕と同じくマジックマニアの友達と待ち合わせて、大阪マジックツアーした。

The first stop was the magic shop French Drop. French Drop is not only a magic shop but also a magic bar. The bar is on the first floor and the shop is on the second. The place was easy to find, but when we entered no one seemed to be there. We shouted "hello" a few times, and the door had bells on it that were noisy etc. but no one showed up. We looked around at the stuff in the shop and later rang a bell again and then had some response. A young and very nice guy showed up and talked to us for awhile.

最初はマジックショップフレンチドロップに行った。フレンチドロップはマジックショップも、マジックバーもあるんだ。１階がバーで、２階がショップだ。場所がすぐ分かった。入って、ドアのベルもなって、「こんにちは！」と何回か呼んだのに誰もいなかった。ショップの商品を色々見て、またテーブルの上にあるベルを鳴らした。今回、若いお兄さんが３階から降りて来た。色々面白い会話をしてくれた。

Me and the famous magician Ponta the Smith

My friend is very fond of the magic of Japanese magician Ponta the Smith, who works at French Drop. Ponta is fairly well known not only in Japan, after his DVD with coin magic ("Sick") became a best seller all over the world. So my friend asked if Ponta was there today, and we were told that he was downstairs in the bar recording things (presentation of new items for the web shop).

友達がポンタという海外でも有名なマジシャンのマジックが大好きだ。ポンタがフレンチドロップで働いているから、友達がスタッフのお兄さんにポンタが今日いるかいないかを聞いた。１階で動画の収録中だと言われた。ウェブショップの商品の紹介の動画。

After he was done downstairs, Ponta came up and spent a long time talking to us. My friend had lots of questions for him. He was very nice and talked about all kinds of things with us. I enjoyed the stories of problems with English when being invited to strange countries all over the world (in the end, London turned out to be the place where it was most difficult to understand what people were saying; go figure (because the natives speak fast)).

収録が終わったら、ポンタが来て結構長く話してくれた。友達が質問沢山あった。色々面白い話があった。僕が海外の発表の依頼の旅行の話が好きだった。英語がよく分からない国が多い。結局一番難しかったのがイギリスのロンドンの時だったそうだ。ネイティブの映画が速くて聞きとりづらいし、ロンドンのなまりがちょっと難しいし。うけるね。
